NetherRealm still working on Mortal Kombat after all - Boon

WBIE's gory fighting series will go on as developer clarifies the studio is currently working on projects both within and apart from famed franchise.

At the Spike TV Video Game Awards on Saturday, NetherRealm head honcho Ed Boon said the developer is working on something other than Mortal Kombat. Fans of the fighting franchise needn't fret, as Boon has since clarified that those other projects are in addition to, and not in place of, Mortal Kombat.

There's more Mortal Kombat koming from NetherRealm.
There's more Mortal Kombat koming from NetherRealm.

Boon posted the clarification on his Twitter account, saying, "NetherRealm has a number of projects in the works. Not JUST Mortal Kombat. :)" A separate response to a fan inquiry explicitly stated, "NetherRealm is working on MK and non-MK games!"

Boon also dropped a few hints regarding future projects, saying the studio's recent Batman: Arkham City Lockdown was just one of multiple surprises it has on the way. Another tease came with Boon's response to the prospect of an Unreal Engine-powered MK appearing on iOS, as the developer simply remarked, "Hmmm…"

Last week, NetherRealm released its first game outside the Mortal Kombat franchise, the Unreal-powered Batman: Arkham City Lockdown for iOS. The game is a mobile brawler offshoot of Rocksteady's Dark Knight games built on the Unreal engine.

I honestly wouldn't trust these guys to do anything well outside of the MK franchise. But maybe they will surprise me.

@parot_of_adun As for Mortal Kombat's Gameplay, it feels the same as it has for 2 decades with very little changing, which is why I suggested slowing down the animations, bringing in more environmental interaction, and yes, the QTE's. Other than more content, I don't see much more that interests a gamer in MK today than it did 20 years ago. It's unfortunate to see a great IP stagnate as MK has when many other IP's have flourished throughout the same time frame. What's truly baffling is the company that produces Batman Arkham Prison/City is the same company that produces Mortal Kombat, there are so many elements from Batman that would fit well in a Mortal Kombat game. Though the Batman games are so good, it's easy to say that elements from those games could fit in any game. :)

@parot_of_adun We'll have to agree to disagree on almost every front. Games moved beyond simple gameplay back in the late 90's, and with the abundance of games on the market (have at least 400 on 360 alone), it's the story that separates them more than anything else. Gamespot has a poll / questionnaire on the site, and one of the questions is how important is the story in a game. Definitely a reason for that question. ;) Agree that there are games that don't have, nor need story, but they are typically on the simple side such as Geometry Wars. Games that go for $60 or more (meaning non-arcade games) typically have, and in many cases need/require, a good story to give the gamer a reason to play through the entire game. QTE's come in many flavors, but I was referring more to the God of War style approach for finishing smaller enemies, versus the QTE's that ruin the great cinematic events that we had come to expect as are reward for a hard won battle.

@valdarez Well, first off, QTE's are terrible things that should never occur under any circumstance (in my opinion anyway). Second, where videogames are concerned, story is easily secondary to gameplay mechanics, otherwise there would be no reason not to watch a movie instead. A good story is a good thing, but story isn't exactly what videogames are about. That's what's great about MK9, they don't take the story seriously (soulnado?), but the fighting itself is great. It could've stood to have a better story, but it wasn't necessary.

@parrot_of_adun With gaming mechanics and gameplay elements seeing little innovation for this old time gamer, it's the story more than anything else that separates games these days. I'd love to see a MK game that focuses on two to three characters at most that tells a great story interspersed with major fight scenarios. I'd like to see batman'esque style fighting incorporated into a MK game for the main gameplay that leads up to the intense 1 vs 1 with a major opponent. I'd also like to see the fighting genre slow down the fighting so we can enjoy it more. By this I mean slower animations. They did this in football over the last 5 years (starting with APF2K8) and it's led to a far more realistic / enjoyable experience. After all, great animations are only enjoyable if you can see them in all their fluidity glory. Finally, once the fight scenarios are slowed down a bit, I'd want there to be some form of quick time events for big hit highlights/impacts, or some way to incorporate the background into a big hit / impact moment. May just be me though with my 1st comment receiving so many negatives. Sadly it seems most people enjoy playing basically the same game over, and over, and over again. I'd rather see it evolve over time, and while MK has added more content with characters, moves, and going 3D even, it hasn't really evolved the overall gameplay in any meaningful way in nearly 2 decades.

I don't think I want to play any MK games on an iOS device. Not that I don't like iOS but playing a fighting on a virtual control within a touch screen is not my thing. If there's one portable device I want my MK, it will had to be the Vita or 3DS, not iOS.

@valdarez I would love for a fighting game to have any semblance of a story, but it won't happen any time soon. At least MK didn't take itself at all seriously, so much so that it's more self-aware and comedic than anything else.

@Ultimate39 There was a while ago, but not anymore. I'd like to see a Psi-ops sequel. It's one of my favourite games from the last generation that hasn't had a sequel in this generation yet. I'd like to see a Timesplitters sequel too.

Can't kill the cash cow. Heck, this is one of the franchises that was keeping Midway afloat before they had to throw in the towel. I'm glad to see them keeping the series alive and I really enjoyed this last installment of MK. My favorite is still MK2 on the 32X. I still have to go back and play that one occasionally.

@VikingPhobos Possibly, but none of the fighting games have ever really included any real sense of a story. They primarily focus on extra characters, moves, and location which is beyond repetitive as we move towards the 2 decade point from the 1st Mortal Kombat release.
