Netflix's Murder Drama Monster Gets Heartbreaking First Trailer

The upcoming movie tells the story of a teen who is fighting for his innocence against a justice system that wants to put him away.

Netflix has released the first trailer for its upcoming drama Monster, and it's heartbreaking. The movie tells the story of Steve Harmon, a teenager who is charged with felony murder. The story covers his journey from a film student from Harlem who attends an elite high school and how he gets involved in a life-altering turn of events.

"A talented teen implicated in a robbery-turned-murder fights for his innocence and integrity against a criminal justice system that's already judged him," reads a line from its description.

Kelvin Harrison Jr. plays Harmon, and the rest of the cast is stacked. It includes Jeffrey Wright, John David Washington, Tim Blake Nelson, Jennifer Hudson, Jharrel Jerome, and Jennifer Ehle. The rappers Nasir "Nas" Jones and Rakim Mayers--AKA A$AP Rocky--also appear in the movie.

Monster actually premiered all the way back at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Netflix bought the movie and is now scheduling it for release on May 7. It represents the feature debut for director Anthony Mandler, who previously shot music videos and commercials. The film is adapted from the Walter Dean Myers book that was published in 1999.

This is the second project at Netflix called Monster. Netflix is also producing a Jeffrey Dahmer miniseries about the murderer called Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, with X-Men and American Horror Story actor Evan Peters attached to play Dahmer.

In other news about Netflix, the streaming company paid $469 million to acquire the upcoming Knives Out sequels from Star Wars director Rian Johnson. As part of the deal, Johnson and star Daniel Craig are making $100 million or more.
