Netflix has announced that Jenna Ortega (Scream, The Fallout) will star in the titular role for its upcoming Tim Burton-directed Wednesday Addams series, simply titled Wednesday. The series marks Burton's directorial TV debut working on a full series.

The young adult series is being described as "a sleuthing, supernaturally-infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams' years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Wednesday's attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago--all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore." The series has so far been greenlit for one season, spanning eight episodes.

Burton's involvement all but assures this new series will do proud by the franchise's characteristic macabre nature and altogether ookiness--the director is synonymous with films with dark style and an odd sense of humor, such as Beetlejuice and the original Michael Keaton Batman. Co-creators Al Gough and Miles Millar--writing partners who developed and worked together on The CW's series Smallville--will serve as showrunners.

In related news, Bewitched, the fantasy sitcom that first debuted on ABC in the 1960s--and was The Addams Family's long-ago programming line-up neighbor--is also being explored for a revival, of all things, thanks in part to the success of WandaVision.
