NeoGeo games to hit Wii Virtual Console

Nintendo of Japan announces plans for SNK's console, first MSX titles for Japanese release.

Last year SNK Playmore revealed that it was getting into the downloadable retro gaming market with a Japanese release of the NeoGeo fighter Fatal Fury Special for the Xbox 360's Live Arcade service. However, the Xbox 360 won't be the only console to offer downloadable NeoGeo games. Nintendo has updated its Japanese Virtual Console page with word that it would begin supporting the NeoGeo this summer.

The site also gives a few more Virtual Console-related updates. The first two MSX games announced for release on the VC are Eggy and Aleste, both slated for release this spring for a price of 800 Wii points ($8) each.

A handful of new companies have also been added to the list of Virtual Console publishers, including Pony Canyon (Dr. Chaos, Phantom Fighter), Spike (Fire Pro Wrestling, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi), SNK Playmore (Fatal Fury, Metal Slug), and mobile game developer G-Mode. This doesn't necessarily mean the Virtual Console will host ports of cell phone games; G-Mode acquired the rights to Data East's catalog of games (including Burger Time and Magical Drop) in 2004.

As of press time, neither Nintendo nor SNK Playmore representatives had responded to GameSpot's request for comment on when (or if) NeoGeo games would be added to the Virtual Console offerings outside of Japan.

TryMe01 more VC support is always great! Amen. Despite the complaints of naysayers regarding the download pricing structure, the VC continues to be a success for the casual, newbie and veteran gamers alike.

Kingtuttle: Ok, one, take your roms elsewhere, two, the only DC games worth playing would not fit on the Wii's internal memory, i know this because i OWN them, and regularly play them on emulator, as my DC is broken.

BottomDollar: Dreamcast will definatly NOT happen, heck NeoGeo is a stretch. Thw Wii has 512 internal memory, so i GUARANTEE, that you will not see dreamcast games released as the large majority of them are AT LEAST 400mb You 'might' see a compilation of them released as a Wii game to play with the classic controller, that'd be cool.

As a former AES and NGPC owner, I whole-heartedly encourage SNK to bring this to the US. The Neo•Geo is still, after all these years, my favorite system, and I rue the day I had to sell it. I hope they introduce the entire library; even though I've played tons of Neo games over the years, there are so many more I never got to try :)

Now... if only Nintendo would release more than 4 at a time. Make a mega release of like 500 at once every 2 weeks or something. I mean there have to be thousands of games that will eventually come to the Wii... perhaps more than that even.

Greg is probably sitting wherever he is yelling "Whooooooooooooooo! NeoGeo!" He's a big fan. He once said that VC would be complete with NeoGeo games. As for me... all the more reason for me to get a Wii. I hope I get one soon.

It's hilarious how little some of you know about the history of the industry that you so rabidly support. Big laughs to Generic_Dude And lol, Neo Geo... the PS3 of the 1980s. I heard a big announcement was coming regarding Wii's Virtual Console, but I would've hoped it would have been better than that overpriced turd of a system. The Neo Geo came out in the 1990's. As far as overpriced turd, you're the one who bought a Wii, not me. If there's ever a Wii game that is anywhere near KoF '98 in terms of fun, I'll do a moonsault off my roof onto a palette of flourescent lightbulbs.

Sweet news all around. Some of these have already been ported in other formats, but there's still a lot of untapped (or un-retapped, I guess) potential out there.

While this is a good move I dont really expect the latest and not all main stream NEO GOE games to hit the Virtual Console, seems SNK is looking at the VC as a more retro oriented "console" About KOFXII in the Wii I doubt in a short-medium term it will probably be released in the Arcades...later in the PS2 and maybe...maybe in the Wii as a standard game and not a download and then we are probably talking about Japan only :? (as has always been a tradition for SNK DAMN YOU SNK I had to buy a Japan PS2 to play NEO GEO battle Colosseum :? and KOF XI)

I'd like SNK to release NeoGeo games on the UK VC list. Its great news, but if it doesn't leave Japan I'll be sad.

PyroSean30 i know it probably would never happen but, i hope they bring Marvel vs Capcom 2 to the Wii... .... That would be Capcom, not SNK Playmore. It was originally released on the Dreamcast so if they do not start allowing Dreamcast games then you can forget about Marvel VS Capcom 2. Plus I think Capcom's rights to using the Marvel charachters has expired.

I want to see some of the games from the NeoGeo pocket colour released on the VC. That system was great, too bad it died so quick. They had some great RPGs and puzzlers on it as well as the best (until recently)sonic game released post Dreamcast. Plus the Metal Slug games on it were far better than the arcade ones on the recent anthology.

With SNK on board, this all but guarantees that Baseball Stars will soon make it to the VC. This is one of the reasons the Wii resides in my living room. Also, there's no doubt that these games will eventually find their way stateside. Peace-
