NEC Gets Quake PowerVR Support
Quake titles will support the company's PowerVR chipset through the use of the OpenGL API.
If one game company was singled out as the best company to push 3D graphical gaming into everyday language, id Software and its uber-game Quake is, without a doubt, the combo that everyone knows.
NEC knows that and today it announced that the Quake series of titles will support the company's PowerVR chipset through the use of the OpenGL API.
"By working with id Software on the hottest titles on the market, PowerVR is able to provide gamers with superior 3D graphics technology while delivering an extraordinary gaming experience," said Charles Bellfield, product marketing manager, multimedia strategic business unit, NEC Electronics.
So now, 3Dfx owners aren't the only ones to enjoy the benefits of GLQuake. GameSpot News has seen GL Quake running in 1024x768 on the PowerVR, and although it isn't as visually stunning as the 3Dfx, it is amazing to see it running with more screen space.
