NBA Live 14 producer - "It's been a rough week"

Sean O'Brien says, "This isn't exactly the NBA Live comeback story we were hoping for"; developer plans to addresses concerns.

After a multi-year hiatus, the NBA Live series returned this year with NBA Live 14 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The response, however, has left much to be desired, according to producer Sean O'Brien.

"I'm not going to lie; it's been a rough week," O'Brien said on the EA Sports blog. "As you can imagine, this isn't exactly the NBA Live comeback story we were hoping for this year. We hear loud and clear that some of you are disappointed in various aspects of NBA Live 14, and I'm sorry if the game doesn't live up to your expectations."

Based on the feedback EA Sports has received so far, O'Brien said the company has devised a plan to make NBA Live 14 a "better game as quickly as we can."

First, O'Brien said EA Sports will improve how NBA Live 14 teaches users how to play, after some players described the process as "frustrating."

"We realize that every single one of you is a new user and know we need to make the game easier to understand and simpler to pick up and play," he said.

EA Sports will hold a series of live streams over Twitch that aim to help teach gamers how to play NBA Live 14. In addition, producers and designers will be online seven days a week to answer questions and provide advice.

What's more, EA Sports has posted various guides concerning controls and game features to the NBA Live website with the aim of helping players get up to speed on basic offense, defense, and play calling.

Improvements to the game's graphics and animations are also on the way, O'Brien said.

"I can tell you that we are committed to making drastic and immediate improvements. In order to get gameplay up and running this year we had to prioritize," O'Brien said. "We felt authentic gameplay, control, and the connected experience would provide the best foundation for the future. As a result, game visuals and animation polish suffered. Improvements on these fronts are also in development now for NBA Live 14. You will notice in the coming weeks and months that the game's visuals and animation will improve significantly."

Feedback around NBA Live 14 has not been completely negative. O'Brien said fans are telling EA Sports that they enjoy the game's Live Season and Big Moments features, which will continue to be updated throughout the NBA season. In addition, O'Brien teased that "big announcements" and "major additions" are coming to NBA Live Ultimate Team down the road.

"Let me wrap up with this; for those of you who have supported us throughout this development cycle and continue to have our backs now, thank you. We've got a lot of work to do; I've got a lot of work to do," O'Brien said. "It started 12 months ago, and continues until we build this franchise bigger and better than it ever was. This is just the first chapter in the NBA Live comeback story."

So you knew you made a piece of crap and tried to sell it for $60? That's a big problem right there because it makes it seem like nba live 14 was a hyped up unfinished cash grab

I guess this is the new era of EA.. Unfinished games released to the public.

Last year it was Battlefield 3. A sum of 22GB updates released for this unbalanced pile of numerous bugs and glitches... the game was unstable.

This year BF4 and NBALive are both unfinished games.

EA has become so greedy, they simply don't care anymore if their project is finished or not, they just care to hit the holiday markets.

Heres a tip: Hire some fucking people that have a clue about how basketball works to help design your game. Live peaked at 2003, after that it slid rapidly downhill into cartoonland-- more worried about dressing up dolls with Jordans and crap instead of concentrating on the actual game of basketball like 2K did.

I was a *DIEHARD* live fan till 2004 came out and they made the game into a joke where you could come down the floor and make threes from half court on every possession.

NBa 2K blows NBA Live away by a mile. NBA Live is a mess and definitely not worth $60. I bought the game, but after reading the many, many bad problems with the game, I just took it back. Felt it wasn't worth my money. I used the $60 to pay for DR3 instead. Seriously, it took EA 3 years for this crap. Are you serious? Sure gamers we're expecting to be as good as NBA 2K14, but we were hoping it was at least close to that level. It's back to the drawing board for EA.

They keep trying to stick all these mechanics into a single box and it's just not working, they've been at it since the 90s... and every new release is the same thing with slightly better graphics, NBA Jam was a fun game that worked (exactly because it was so simple)... all these attempts at simulation don't work, the AI players will never behave in a realistic fashion until we actually develop true AI. There really is no need to release the same product every year or couple years (like pretty much all sports games are) instead take the time to make one (I'm not asking for much am I?) game that actually works well and is fun to play, take three years, hell take four, but deliver something that's worth the time and the money, not this same crap every year.

That's basically like saying, "We're sorry that you're not enjoying the game. It's not that the game is bad, you're just too stupid to understand why it's good."

Well played, EA...

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah really. I guess they need to blame the players instead of blaming themselves for releasing such a poor game. Also after reading this article they almost make it sound like the problem is with the visuals, and that improving that would make it a much better game.

"This is just the first chapter in the NBA Live comeback story."

I bet the next chapter starts with EA buying exclusive deals with any major basketball league, that way they don't have any competition to make their game look like crap. It's happened once and it could happen again.

The only thing about Live that beats 2k in my opinion is the presentation. I really like the menus in Live but other than that 2K has them beat in everything else

The fact that they are at least trying to make it better is a good sign. I went with NBA 2K14 on PS4 because they were releasing video and people kept talking about how beautiful it was, not to mention I rented it on Xbox 360 and loved it, and they kept this one pretty secret right until release. I figured there was a reason, and I think I was right. Hopefully they'll take all the good ideas they had and give 2K some competition. Just like Xbox needs PS, I think NBA 2K needs live around to keep pushing them to improve as well. Glad they are aknowledging the game's flaws and being proactive about it.

I don't know if it's equally as bad. Madden is madden, and there's fun to be had with a couple buddies. Had a great time playing with my brother and a friend on the PS4 version, but I still look back fondly on my experience with 2K's football game on Dreamcast. First sports game I played on Dreamcast way back when, and I remember friends coming over and they couldn't believe how great it looked and played. It would be so awesome if they'd get back into football as well, and then Madden would have to get better to compete

... EA heads had a meeting and came out of it saying they wanted to make better games... since then I think they've actually made worse games (aside from Sim City). Getting silly. I hope they don't completely trash the Star Wars license.

@tomservo51 @LickTheEnvelope DICE is going to learn the same hard lesson Bioware and Pandemic learned.

You lie down with this Dog, you will not only wake up with fleas, you'll end up with the cost of losing everything that made you special in the first place.

Not a chance in hell that live will ever best 2K, they should just give up (again). Now just to convince the madden bots to not buy EA's shitware and get 2K to come back and shame madden like they did in the past.

NBA 2K14 on PS4 is the reason I bought the console on launch day and I don't regret it. It's an amazing game, by yourself or with friends. So glad I didn't opt for this one.

The whole game needs to be designed from scratch EA! The game play is just broken in my eyes and to be honest this doesn't feel like basketball....it has no soul! I'd be quite happy to see the NBA license stay exclusively with 2K, they just get it!

Gameplay, visuals, animation, and control are the heart and soul of any game. Who cares about Live Season and Big Moments if the core game sucks ? While Sean's apology and contrition is appreciated, how in the world can he justify shipping a game that is obviously sub-par in nearly every key area, and far below the EA standard ? If he knew that "drastic and immediate improvements" would be necessary, why did he ship it in the first place ? It’s completely inexcusable to rush out a game like this in order to boost sales by taking advantage of new console launch marketing momentum and the holiday season. Andrew, Peter, it's high time that you got your NBA house in order.

These look like improvements you would make to a beta. Do them before you release the game. This shows how well you test your games. What, you didn't notice that the defense ai doesn't move when you have the ball?

NBA 2K is so good, i dont even know how they are going to catch up to it. You can tell 2K 's focus is to try and make the game as close to a real life broadcast as possible, whereas EA is still trying to make a good game. But us the audience are way beyond that now. We have seen that its possible to make a game almost like a real life broadcast and we like it.

i have to say, if hes been making NBA Live for 10 years, it might be time for some new blood. There's a reason why John Carmack left, he had a conflict of interest with bestheda over DOOM. Sometimes games need new developer blood and Live needs new developer blood. but then i dont really care. NBA 2K is so good, that im kind of glad EA has lost out on a sports title. I hope we see some NFL competition eventually to. having such good competition in NBA 2K cant be bad for a developer. Tons of stuff to compete with for the future. FIFA ripped off most of their stuff from the original Pro Evo games. FIFA is good now , because Pro Evo was so damn good in the past.

This isn't a problem that can be solved by simply updating the graphics. The game needs a complete engine overhaul and should be rebuilt from the ground up. I know that making games isn't easy but I still have no idea how Sean O'Brien needed the public to tell him that this was an extremely poor effort. There's a reason that this is the first NBA Live game in years and amazingly none of the issues that plagued previous entries in the series have been fixed despite all of this time off. The only answers I can come up with as to why this game was even released in its current state are that O'Brien never even played the finished product himself or that he just didn't care... and I really hope it's not the latter. All he needed to do was look at NBA 2K14 and then look at NBA Live 14 to realize that the latter isn't even close to a finished product.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think what they are saying is that they had to prioritise other things. The engine could be great, but due to time they couldnt get the most out of it or push it to the limits. 2k seem to be getting the most out of theirs though.

But I agree that graphics are not really the issue here, the gameplay and Live mode are flawed.

I downloaded the demo of this game for PS4. Upon starting it for the first time, it prompted me to login into an origin account. As a result, I exited and deleted the game.

This review makes me feel bad for EA. They have some interesting ideas but I don't understand how playability can ever be sacrificed for other modes and features.

Its really quite sad that EA cant even begin to offer a decent sports game that is able to compete with the 2k ones when they are one of the largest and most successful video game companies. I mean man if 2k were still allowed to do football games madden probably wouldn't even exist anymore.
