Naughty Dog Open to a New Crash Bandicoot, But the Time May Not Be Right

The developer that created the Crash series says, "It's never off the table."

Between HD remasters, digital re-releases, and the like, ways to satisfy your nostalgia are not hard to come across these days. Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House recently offered hope to fans who would like to see the company revive some of its older franchises, including Crash Bandicoot--a series created by Naughty Dog, the developer now best known for The Last of Us and Uncharted. Given the studio's current focus on those types of games, you might expect the prospect of a new Crash from Naughty Dog to be completely dead. That's actually not the case, although there is a reason its focus has been elsewhere lately.

"It's never off the table," Naughty Dog community strategist Arne Meyer told IGN when asked about bringing back Crash. "It's not too much time passing, but it's the same issues we explored with the Jak game: Is it something that makes sense to us now? I mean, we still have people that worked on the Crash games in the studio. We never forget our past and it'd be great for nostalgic reasons. It'd be the same reason as why there isn't a Jak 4: I don't know if it's playing to our strengths right now."

Last year, Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann revealed that the studio set out to reboot another of its old series, Jak and Daxter, in 2009. As it began coming up with ideas, it found it was "kind of getting away from what Jak and Daxter was. We were questioning, 'Are we doing this for marketing reasons? Naming something Jak and Daxter, when it's not really Jak and Daxter? Or are we really passionate about it?'"

That project never panned out because of Naughty Dog's desire to make a different type of game, and that seems to remain the case, according to Meyer. "Right now, what's exciting everyone at the studio is continuing to work on narrative-driven games with strong characters," he explained. "I think, at least for the time being, we haven't exhausted the possibilities there, but that could change with something as simple as hardware. That's what drove it before. I think we're on to something really good though creating character-driven stories so that's where our focus is going to be."

A game in the core Crash series was last seen in 2008, when the poorly received Crash: Mind Over Mutant was released. You have to go back a decade to 1998's Crash Bandicoot: Warped to find the last core Crash game made by Naughty Dog, which also released a surprisingly good kart racing game--Crash Team Racing--in 1999.

The Crash series--which is now owned by Activision, rather than Sony--has been quiet for years now; the latest title to bear the jorts-wearing Bandicoot's name was mobile game Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 2 in 2010. Despite this, Activision said last year that it "continue[s] to explore ways in which we could bring the beloved series back to life."

Naughty Dog is set to release the PlayStation 4 version of last year's acclaimed The Last of Us next week. It's also currently at work on Uncharted 4: A Thief's End for PS4 and some other "brand-new experience."

Would you like to see a Crash revival, or would it best to leave those fond memories--and jorts--in the past? Let us know in the comments.

I would like to see a Crash revival, as long as it's not published by Activision, they should to sell that franchise and the Spyro franchises back to Sony because Activision has already ruined them.

Nothing that makes people money is ever off the table. We all know that money rules most things, as sad and true as it is to say.

I haven't played Knack which was supposed to bring back some type of nostalgia. I think Crash Bandicoot should still take its rightful place just like many other popular late 90's hits but it is up to them to bestow some good classic feel otherwise drop it for only graphic's sake once again. I would like to see a new sequel nevertheless

Despite the fact that platformers may no longer be the "relevant" genre anymore, they are still just as fun to play with friends today as they were back then. LittleBigPlanet and New Super Mario Bros are good examples of that. Hell, Crash 2 is still one of my favorite games ever.

That being said I think that Sony selling off Crash was one of the worst mistakes they ever made. I think Crash has the potential to make a big comeback on PS4 if Naughty Dog is behind the reins.

Never clicked with Crash on PSOne, much preferred Rayman original. Mario 64 was a early polygon 3D platformer I enjoyed, Crash didn't do it for me :)

PSOne was best for the Resident Evil trilogy, stellar library of RPG games, Metal Gear, Tekken 3, & Symphony of the Night.

Please stop capitalizing all words in your headlines. I thought for a moment that the game developers had changed their name to "Naughty Dog Open". -_-

Crash games for the PS1 were great fun back in the day, would be interesting to see how they make the new game if they ever get to it or if Activision lets them in the first place.

Please!!! Bring back Cash and Jak!

I would LOVE a brand new world to explore like in the original Jak and Daxter with today's technology available.

Sorry but you're dead wrong. Story does matter as video games have evolved. Certain genres (sports) can get away with no story for obvious reasons, but games with a bad story, rehashed story, or no story just seem pointless.

This argument that gameplay is all that matters is a ridiculous one made by dbag hipsters who are satisfied with games that are as complex as a rock. Gameplay, story, graphics, sound, etc ALL matter. It's why games like minecraft and most indie games are trash. They insult the medium by remaining in the mediocre past.

@Dissentioncc They actually have a point, it seems like there was a lack of emphasis when reviewing the gameplay. TLoU wasn't bad, but it lacked depth and was a total mixed bag when it came to level design, some areas just felt tiresome and like blatant padding.

Context is important, but gameplay should be the most important thing. Take the first UC for example, poor shooting mechanics that made combat repetitive and monotonous, the gameplay was truly mediocre at best, with weak puzzles and poor platforming mechanics, not to mention the hordes of enemies, it was tiring, frustrating, and felt the same throughout.

Now it has cool set pieces, but does that really makeup for most of the gameplay being weak? Not for me, the characters are likeable, so it was fun to watch like a movie, but not fun to play. My favorite sections of the game revolved around anything but combat.

What about a game like Limbo? Storytelling is nonexistent, but the atmosphere is tops and the puzzle solving is fairly well designed. A developer of the game even took a shot at UC2's puzzles and made a good point. What about Crash Bandicoot? The gameplay still holds well today, but the storytelling was weak.

A demo/prologue like Ground Zeroes completely dwarfed TLoU' gameplay, in-depth and sound mechanics, top notch AI, and great level design while being completely open and ridiculously approachable. So it makes me question, are voice acting, production values, and storytelling so important that we can overlook weak gameplay? I can't. Even though I'd rate TLoU just a tad under a 9, DmC that I keep forgetting released last year was way more fun to play, the game has awesome combat, I liked Tomb Raider better as well, far superior pacing and variation. Hell, I had more fun playing Rayman Legends.

"The time may not be right" thats a clever way to say: "we don't own the rights over crash, so f*ck you gamers, we aren't making a crash game anymore, deal with it"

I'd love a proper new Crash Bandicoot, there hasn't been a decent one since Crash Team Racing, Warped is still my favourite by far though, including its soundtrack, good times =P

How could Sony and ND do another Crash if Activision owns the rights?

More importantly, HOW THE HELL DID ACTIVISION GET HOLD OF THE RIGHTS?

These tools would ruin the franchise with some shltty scripted platforming, loads of cinematics, checkpoints and a focus on story instead of making a true game. Naughty Dog are the most overrated and undeserving ''video game'' devs.

@gameroutlawzz I think they just went with the flow of the industry... we can't really blame them for it. They're still talented at what they do, it's just that they don't make traditional games anymore.

I do wonder if they could still make a game that really focuses on gameplay, though. Like an actual game that offers a challenge, with good level design, tight controls, catchy music, etc.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Story is overrated. You don't need a lot of story to have a fun game. Naughty Dog take themselves too seriously, now.

Honestly, I think Insomniac would be better suited to a new Crash game than Naughty Dog. Their games have stories, but they aren't up their own ass pretentious.
