More Powerful PS4 Neo Will Launch This Year - Report

Sony's new and improved console could debut a year before Microsoft's Project Scorpio.

According to a new report, Sony's more powerful PlayStation 4, Neo, will launch before the end of 2016. That means it would arrive well ahead of Microsoft's Project Scorpio.

"Several sources have indicated" this information to Eurogamer's Richard Leadbetter. "If that is the case, it'll be interesting to see how developers utilize its resources, and whether 4K really is the focus. And we can be equally as sure that Microsoft will be watching just as intently as it gears up for its own next-gen roll-out," the report said.

No Caption Provided

Sony's Andrew House confirmed Neo just days before E3, at the time also mentioning that it would not be discussed at the event. For its part, Microsoft announced Project Scorpio during its briefing, a system the company describes as "the most powerful console ever made."

Scorpio, which features 6 teraflops of performance, is scheduled to come out in holiday 2017. Pricing has not been announced for the Neo or Scorpio; in both cases, the games that work on PS4 and Xbox One today will also be supported on the new systems.

If Neo is indeed coming out this year, some possible, but not confirmed, venues for Neo's official announcement might include Gamescom, Tokyo Game Show, or Paris Games Week. It might also be that Sony hosts a dedicated event for the unveiling, as it did for the PS4.

Is there a chance Sony will release a PS4 to rival the X1S and then release Neo to rival Scorpio?

@eli150: pretty sure the neo is already made. It's been rumored with specs for a while. Too many sources for these rumors to not be somewhat true. I think they'll release it this year, which will hurt xbox one s sales (even more than the announcement of scorpio lol). Flood the market before scorpio comes. With the exclusives coming for ps4/neo this year and next, ps4 and neo will continue selling great. I have I feeling it's gonna be close to a 3 to 1 difference in sales by the time scorpio launches. And scorpio is a "premium" console for 4k gamers, so it'll probably be costly and won't sell much.

if Sony's console is weaker than Scorpio, I will most definitely hold my horses and wait for Holiday 2017. Only a fan-boy would buy a weaker console when a more powerful one is on the horizon!

@sev2010: If you already own a ps4, and no xbox one, I agree. Too many good exclusives coming out for ps4 to not own one... which, the neo will be great for those people.

@sev2010:

It's about the software .... 6 Teraflops is no big deal if there are no good games developed for it. MS has had issues producing 9 and 10 score IP's. Sony might also beef up the NEO specs and there will be awesome games coming out for it.

@ramtracker42: Each and everyone of the games coming to Neo will also be playable on PS4. So I think you would agree with me I said the wisest decision is to hold on to your PS4 up until holiday 2017, and then decide which one of the upgrades suit you best knowing almost everything about Scorpio and Neo.

@zero_dawn: Lazy people or console gamers as they're referred to. Honestly I ditched PC gaming, but at that price I'd rather go back. Especially if I can only count on it to last for 3 years before an upgrade.

in all honest i dont see the point in the new scorpio, hardware improves very fast these days, within the year the parts used in the scorpio will be cheaper for a pc build then the costs of buying the scorpio. the price of this scorpio will need to be dirt cheap otherwise why bother at all? its not like its going to have exclusives everything is coimg out of windows 10 anyway even the VR aspect can be covered by a pc.

@neowarrior793: Seems like a lot of weird decisions. Announce the X1s, then announce a better console. Then announce that you don't need consoles at all. And that you should just buy a PC.

@neowarrior793: that is just not true. You can't built a PC that can play games at the same level as the Scorpio. You have to get monitor, power supply, case, ram, keyboard, mouse, motherboard ,CPU, and then a vdo card that start about $370 (NVIDIA 1070) to get close to the performance of Scorpio if it comes out at $500.

As a person that has been building Gaming PC for over 20years that argument. Please explain.

@6t4gp: for starters that price wont be the same at what you have now to what it will be by the time the Scorpio comes out. most of that stuff will be on sale within that year, so if you decide to build a gaming pc right now, most likly get all of thoes items will be much chaper than $370 (for a mid level gaming pc). that 18 month diffrence will change the price, also i belive the Scorpio will costs way more than $500. its going to be close to a 2nd/3rd tier pc so cheapest i can see that thing be £/$700+ unless MS sell for a big loss. cut out peripherals and just concentrate on the main system then you would have a VR ready, 1440p minimal, amd 8 core 4.0/4.5, 16 gb ram with a 1 tb hard drive (with somthing like a gtx 970) custome built for that price mark (£/$700 right now), and probably be cheaper in 18 monthes to include peripherals and still be cheaper. hell theres a £/$200 GPU that able to do VR, if you can SLI (or similar) 2 of them you probably be good enough.

@6t4gp: Those are currant prices... in 18 months when scorpio releases, the price of the same hardware will probably be half of what it is today. I'm not a PC gamer yet, but I'm amazed at how affordable it's becoming so quickly.

I'm looking forward to playing Horizon Zero Dawn in 4k. If they have a first person mode for PSVR, I'll preorder PSVR within 5 minutes.

I'll likely get PSVR no matter what, and I'm looking forward to trying it out as soon as they have them to try out in stores.

Resident Evil VII in VR sounds scary as hell. That Farpoint game seems like a fun VR game, too, and of course Star Wars.

@zero_dawn: So you mean you are willing to drop a thousand dollars on a 4k TV and also pay for a brand new console just to play the same game, which you could've played on your ps4, with better pixels?!! A very wise decision.

I think Play Anywhere announced by Microsoft is the game changer here. Buy a console game - and be able to play it on PC at no extra cost. Support for two platforms with one game. Great when certain games play better on PC with Keyboard/Mouse. VR is probably suited more to high end PC than console. So Xbox + PC you have your bases pretty much covered on the gaming front. Not that many PS4+ exclusives to write home about. I think it's a good tactical move. That makes the device you are playing on, less important.

@Fallenlords69: Well if you have a pc that can run those ms exclusives, I'm not sure why you'd have an xbox? It's like cross buy on ps3 and ps4. I have both systems, and only pay one price for the game, but why would I play it on ps3?

@joshrmeyer: Console gamer at heart. Bought the Xbox One first. But what I am realising having just bought my gaming PC is things are just easier now. Steam Big Picture, Nvidia optimised game settings, remote play (stream to a lesser PC on the same network connected to the TV). Xbox apps on PC - game streaming from Xbox etc. PC exclusives, low game prices ... even refunds on Steam. It is all starting to gel together more than it has done in the past.

With Play Anywhere there is some reassurance as a console player, that if you did switch entirely to PC, you in essence take the bulk of your game library with you. Backwards compatibility ... not so much of a problem if a game will play on PC. So Project Scorpio whatever it is will probably have compatibility with these titles straight from launch. I think there is like a cross-over about to happen, with Play Anywhere being the first indication.

@Fallenlords69: "That makes the device you are playing on, less important." "Support for two platforms with one game.". Might be good for the consumer. But I fail to see how this is good for the Xbox community. Also this... "Not that many PS4+ exclusives to write home about'. I realize that is subjective. However, comments like that discredit what you are saying...

@batts86: "Not that many PS4+ exclusives to write home about'. I realize that is subjective ... Yeah totally, it is just not my type of console. A Realm Reborn is the only reason I use it, and now I have a gaming PC thinking of moving over to that due to Keyboard/Mouse/PC better for MMO's than console. So only keep my PS4 hopefully for the Last of Us 2...

As mentioned in a previous comment I think the lines between console and PC are going to be blurred. And Play Anywhere is the start of that deliberate blurring by Microsoft. I think it is a strategy that will ultimately see Xbox Players - playing on a gaming PC (Project Scorpio) and not a console as we know it today.

@Fallenlords69: I too play 14 a lot.. What server btw? Anyways, I get what you're saying but at the same time I can''t justify myself buying an new Xbox in 2017 with what they have.. I think it's because I have grown out of the franchises I once loved on Xbox.. Halo and Gears were the huge reason I kept purchasing the new Xbox's.. But now after having the X1 I'm just not into those franchises anymore... Also playing with a controller on 14 is really smooth in fact many people including myself have cleared A6s just fine, with a controller.

@batts86: 14, I am on (EU) Lich at the moment but I bounce around with multiple characters on various servers. Controller isn't bad, but from playing Black Desert on the PC I realise how much easier it is with keyboard/mouse for your typical MMO. Rumour is A Realm Reborn is coming to Xbox One, Square Enix in talks at the moment.

I think with franchises at one time they were a big selling point for a console. Now I think the financial realities of making a game mean most companies can't afford to just cater to one platform exclusively. Especially as VR platforms are added, mobile gaming gets better, cloud computing etc. So from the game perspective I think the platform is going to matter less than it does now.

@Fallenlords69: I'm a PC gamer first and I'm beyond hyped for all the PS4 exclusives coming. PLENTY to write home about. Play anywhere is cool, but it's not the game changer you're thinking it is. My buddy buys a game on the XB1 and he sells me the Windows store code for $30. Works out for us. :) Console gamers aren't switching to PC anytime soon just because Microsoft exclusives are going to be made available to the platform. For the most part console gamers are too lazy and cheap.

@Rushaoz: I think it's the first step between bridging the gap between console and PC, that might actually make a difference. With the idea of the platform not being as important as the game itself - because Microsoft lost that battle with Sony. It will not make a massive difference initially, but all depends on what details we get with regards to Project Scorpio. My gut feeling is Project Scorpio will be a gaming PC right out the gate with a Microsoft Logo, not a console as we know consoles now. It will run a gaming version of Windows 10 but with more PC functionality - hooked into the Xbox Live network, and the hardware will be upgradeable up to a point graphics card, memory, storage. That is my feeling anyway - bit like a Steam Machine but a lot better implemented. Microsoft has lost the war of the consoles just based on sales numbers - doubtful they will recover. But merge Xbox and PC gaming into one and your user base is huge...

Neo wont be released this year, it is too soon. Early next year maybe. The developers need sufficient testing time to make games for 4K native market.

@eddie_220: You need to understand this now, the Neo is NOT going to be capable of 4k GAMEPLAY. The bump in GPU specs will most likely allow developers to hit a 1080p 60 FPS target like most gamers would like to see. Which to me is more important than 4k. If anything, 1440p should be the next resolution consoles aim for, not 4k.
