More People Playing Witcher 3 on GOG than on Steam

CD Projekt's digital distribution service edges out Steam and all other PC platforms.

Publisher CD Projekt, parent company of Witcher developer CD Projekt Red, announced today that most PC players play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on CD Projekt's distribution platform, GOG.com. This is surprising because Steam is the most used platform by a large amount.

In a press release, the company revealed that over 690,000 people play the game through GOG, a substantial number considering it sold 4 million copies total across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. In fact, GOG didn't just edge out Steam--more copies are activated on GOG than on all other PC distribution platforms combined.

Most likely, people flocked to GOG for the discount deals, which included up to 20 percent off of pre-order purchases. GOG also appealed to players for its insistence on keeping the Witcher 3 DRM-free. Green Man Gaming, another distribution platform, also sold GOG keys for the game at a discount, which could have helped drive people to GOG.

The company also released some other stats about player usage through GOG. According to the statement, the sales account for "more than 21.5 petabytes of game and bonus content delivered, 3.5 million achievements unlocked, and 1,770 combined years of game time spread over 190+ countries."

CD Projekt Red is still coming out with free weekly content for the game, and will continue to do so through July. This week's DLC includes new cards for Gwent and a quest about a town run by pigs.

so basically it has sold about a million copies on PC and a million on Xbox one and 2 million on PS4 so basically a console that has sold about 25 million unit has double the sales for a multiplat game then on PC a platform with over 100 million LOL if PS4 had as many users as PC when witcher 3 came out it would sell 10-15 times as many copies games sell like crap on PC

@tom2750: Those are sales that happened within 2 weeks after the release date. There was also pre-orders and we don't know how many that was in total. For the record though, no matter what, selling a million copies is not selling like crap.

EDIT: And yeah I just assumed there was an actual breakdown of units sold but reading the comments it seems like there never was. Trolling then.

@Wintermist: it says it sold more on GOG then all other PC platforms combined and it said it sold 690000 copies on GOG by this logic at most it sold 1.38 million copies on PC of the 4 million copies sold so far but most likely only sold about 1 million copies but even if we assume it sold those 1.38 million copies then at worst for console 2 console platforms that have a very small install base compared to PC still managed to significantly outsell the PC version so basically the PC version sells like crap compared to the console version which is very common thing partly thanks to the rampant piracy within PC gaming and partly thanks to the so many low budget crappy PC exclusives that spread the PC user base to thin over way to many crappy low budget PC exclusives

@tom2750: Yet the gaming PC that people spent money on is more likely to cost x2 than a PS4, so what's the issue? Laughing that people can't afford a decent PC to play the game on Ultra? Well, that's your fault for being broke. Oh and most likely, the game came free with the graphics card including Arkham Knight.

@40mdf0: oh yeh because your platform sells like garbage the PC sales aren't being fully reported HAHA right it's a well known fact consoles sell way more copies of games then PC does on multiple occasions developers have said most of there sales come from console in fact there have been multiple times were it has been revealed that the PS4 alone a console with no more then 25 million owners so far sold way more copies of multiple games then the whole PC platform

don't forget that all the promotional nvidia cards came with gog keys and the hard copies in stores came with gog keys, and a lot of countries including mine and all central and eastern europe are classified on steam as first tier and second tier on gog, so it is almost half the price from gog, that stuff adds up quite hard

Exactly. GOG cd keys are distributed to retailers worldwide, no Steam cd key was created for this game.

GOG and Steam both had the same preorder discounts of 20% total - that is if you bought the two previous games:

10% preorder discount, 5% TW1 loyalty discount and 5% more for TW2.

@tom2750: 1.38 million * 3 = 4.14 million ≈ 4 million. Thus, it is far more likely that the PS4, Xbox One and PC EACH had 1.3 million in sales. You can't just approximate 400K of sales by going from 2.62 million to 3 million.

So, how is it that supporting crappy PC sales? You can't group PS4 and Xbox One together when comparing it to PC. After all, PS4 and Xbox One, like PC, have many exclusives on their respective platforms. The numbers seem to suggest that PC, Xbox One, and PS4 are equally matched in sales numbers.
