More People Playing Witcher 3 on GOG than on Steam

CD Projekt's digital distribution service edges out Steam and all other PC platforms.

Publisher CD Projekt, parent company of Witcher developer CD Projekt Red, announced today that most PC players play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on CD Projekt's distribution platform, GOG.com. This is surprising because Steam is the most used platform by a large amount.

No Caption Provided

In a press release, the company revealed that over 690,000 people play the game through GOG, a substantial number considering it sold 4 million copies total across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. In fact, GOG didn't just edge out Steam--more copies are activated on GOG than on all other PC distribution platforms combined.

Most likely, people flocked to GOG for the discount deals, which included up to 20 percent off of pre-order purchases. GOG also appealed to players for its insistence on keeping the Witcher 3 DRM-free. Green Man Gaming, another distribution platform, also sold GOG keys for the game at a discount, which could have helped drive people to GOG.

The company also released some other stats about player usage through GOG. According to the statement, the sales account for "more than 21.5 petabytes of game and bonus content delivered, 3.5 million achievements unlocked, and 1,770 combined years of game time spread over 190+ countries."

CD Projekt Red is still coming out with free weekly content for the game, and will continue to do so through July. This week's DLC includes new cards for Gwent and a quest about a town run by pigs.

@Tiger_Ali: what exactly do you mean by that? as far as im concearned if the game has been finished by anybody at this time on this day then they surely havnt played the game propperly?
im like 30 hours in or something and all i have to show for it is a massive Gwent collection. i think im just about level 20 (or nearly there at least) and i have barely touched the main missions. i have also slept with quite a lot of women in that time from the brothels (not for the reasons you might think but for the sole purpose of keeping Geralt happy while he plays Gwent all the time) :)

@Tiger_Ali: What kind of fool thinks that a massive open world RPG won't be played after a mere 24 days after release?

Sir, you are Homer Simpsons favourite food.

@jdlok: It is an open world. It is divided into 3 main regions but that doesn't mean it's small.

@jdlok: More open world than any game before it... The game is huge. Calling people losers for liking a great dev is stupidity at it's finest.

im really happy to see the pc community support this game, it really deserves all the support in the world. the quality of this game is like no other and it runs so good on my budget system. i have played a lot of games on pc since i got it in december and there has been a lot of crap, or games that run poorly but the witcher 3 has surely set a new standard?.

i wonder what the sales are in "full" on pc then, between steam, gog, and whatever else there is to get the game from. im guessing well over 1mil in total. anyone not got the game yet go and get it, its awesome :)

Excellent! Thats what we think of your DRM Steam! The players will speak with their wallets. It will only be a matter of time before the publishers are forced to do it our way. And you know what? There is no way I am uploading the Witcher 3, because I am so proud to have purchased it and gotten it DRM free.

Good. I'm tired of people praising Steam. It's about time some good competition showed up, especially one pushing DRM-free.

~700,000 on GoG + 550,000 on Steam + ~250,000 on retail = 1.5 M on PC. So, a little lore than 1/3rd. Seems legit.

Honestly, the only reason I played it on GOG is that I got it with my graphics card. I probably wouldn't have bought the game if I didn't receive it for free. It would've been on the "lets wait until it gets heavily discounted" list.

It's nice to see it doing well on GOG. Steam NEEDS competition.

I wonder if those number are all GoG...because the video I saw earlier mentioned those numbers exclusively for Galaxy and then the rest for all other platforms (which I assumed included standard GoG download)...I have no idea if GoG is separate from Galaxy as a platform

I'm pretty sure this is because GoG sold the game at a big loss...my friend bought it on there for like $19...of course they sold more than steam charging $54...math

@eightpack02: Sounds like he used a VPN to change his ip to Russia or something... game was closer to $50 for most, they certainly didn't sell the game "at a loss", that'd be ridiculous.

@nl_skipper: Unless they're selling it for maybe $.25, there's no real way to sell a digital product as a loss...

@nl_skipper: Got mine for $30. There's no way I'm paying full price on Steam when its cheaper elsewhere, and there's no way I'm dealing with any extra crap. DRM free or go home.

As a member of both i can tell you the GOG.com community is tight knit and active in a way that is perfect for a game like Witcher 3. Steam is wonderful in its own way but it totally makes sense to me to see the GOG.com people supporting a small dev studio in large numbers. Especially since GOG.com has made a point to have the previous Witcher games on sale and front and center, very often in the past 6 months.

If you want to gain some faith in humanity, go hang out in the GOG.com forums during a big sale or event. Ive been blown away by the generosity and kindness that is standard by the most active members.

Steam is a platform, Gog.com is a community and i think thats part of whats at work here.

@Alecmrhand: Witcher is front and center on GOG because CD Projekt owns both the developer who made Witcher and GOG.com

Good. Steam needs to be taken down a few notches. Gabe is getting waaay to comfortable in his mansion. Hence the paid mod fiasco. That would have never happened if Steam had competition to worry about. Monopolies tend to get Big Head Syndrome. Now if we can just knock NVidia off its pedestal, maybe things will start to improve.

@Saidrex: If Valve and Bethesda hadn't taken any cut of the mod sales, the community still would have flipped it's **** and torn itself apart just the same.

Why would you purposely add DRM to your own game, if you have the choice?

Of course more people would buy it through GOG.
