More People Playing Witcher 3 on GOG than on Steam

CD Projekt's digital distribution service edges out Steam and all other PC platforms.

Publisher CD Projekt, parent company of Witcher developer CD Projekt Red, announced today that most PC players play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on CD Projekt's distribution platform, GOG.com. This is surprising because Steam is the most used platform by a large amount.

No Caption Provided

In a press release, the company revealed that over 690,000 people play the game through GOG, a substantial number considering it sold 4 million copies total across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. In fact, GOG didn't just edge out Steam--more copies are activated on GOG than on all other PC distribution platforms combined.

Most likely, people flocked to GOG for the discount deals, which included up to 20 percent off of pre-order purchases. GOG also appealed to players for its insistence on keeping the Witcher 3 DRM-free. Green Man Gaming, another distribution platform, also sold GOG keys for the game at a discount, which could have helped drive people to GOG.

The company also released some other stats about player usage through GOG. According to the statement, the sales account for "more than 21.5 petabytes of game and bonus content delivered, 3.5 million achievements unlocked, and 1,770 combined years of game time spread over 190+ countries."

CD Projekt Red is still coming out with free weekly content for the game, and will continue to do so through July. This week's DLC includes new cards for Gwent and a quest about a town run by pigs.

@rarerichz: I don't really understand this. Steam, yes, is a drm but it's not as restrictive as drm-free fanboys are spouting around. GOG, yes, it's a drm-free game store, very awesome.
BUT it's silly for you to think that when Steam dies there will be no way to get your purchased games from them ever. Won't that same thing happen to the games from GOG when it dies? You know, you need to download the games from there servers, right? Or you guys think that ONLY GOG/CDPR will go the extra mile to leave the download servers open when their company dies? lel

That's always the argument with Steam, and it's simply not going to happen. Stop scaremongering.

If you're going to post an argument against Steam and/or DRM, then at least post one that is realistic or true.

And you had the nerve to call others idiots.

Gamespot is getting sloppy in their news covers recently. They forgot to mention that all PC boxed copies of the game also require GOG Galaxy to play. I bet there were at least several dozen thousand PC box copies that contributed to this result. Not to mention that in Poland you could get the game for 35 USD with all the nice bonus content included (map, guide, witcher pendent key ring etc.). But is all about the digital distribution now bla bla bla.

Got nothing to do with the fact that The Witcher 3 was given away free with NVidia cards and had to be turned in through GoG?

It's amazing how they can produce such a huge game at such a high quality for a fraction of the costs that bigger Publishers have. $32 million for the game, $35 million for the Marketing. For comparison: GTA V $265 million, AC:Unity ~$150 million. CDPR already made back their costs and then some.

I did the math using the stats above, and the average GOG Witcher 3 player has played for 22.5 hours. FYI.

That is good to hear. I personally preordered on GOG because I figured 100% of the sale would go to CD Projekt, plus I got a great discount from owning the previous two games.

Makes sense. Steam is actually one of the worst places to buy new release titles. They're usually at most 10% off for preorder and stay full price for a really long time. You can find way better deals anywhere else. I only bought it on steam because I enjoy the platform and like to keep all my games on it. If the game requires steam though, I buy it elsewhere. Greenmangaming has been my go to for buying games now for a massive discount.

When I finally purchase my PC version of Witcher 3, I am going to buy it from GOG. Not because GOGGalaxy is a better alternative for Steam, but just I want to keep supporting CDProjekt.

You're forgetting that many people have an extensive library of games on Steam and, for me personally, would like to keep everything in one place. I'm not worried about DRM. I think the detriments of it are seriously overplayed by a great number of people.

I honestly can't ever see me switching from Steam to another service.

I have one game on GoG. That's The Witcher 3 and I would have preferred it with Steam but I got the game free with my GTX 980.

I call that 'keeping an open mind'...not the usual 'being dead against any form of DRM with little or no thought' that I see plastered everywhere.

@holifeet: I have an extensive collection on Steam too. Using GOG doesn't mean I need to leave Steam completely. If I see a deal on GOG I will take it, and this is just me but I would prefer to buy games on GOG if they are both available on Steam and GOG with the same price.

We are already using other clients for EA games, so I don`t mind having galaxy and using it too. Seeing how getting too big is going to Valve`s head, I am all for having a competitive alternative to Steam.

GOG is doing another thing apart from whole DRM thing, that is the parity in the prices, something that Steam just does not want to do. Pound or Euro are not equal to dollar. Having the ability to roll back on game updates is another good plus in my book.

Finally, whoever just blindly disagrees with using Galaxy without actually trying it, is no different from those people you mentioned that are all for Galaxy solely because of DRM.

I have no problem with using Galaxy. I just see no real reason to do so. I don't find DRM inhibiting in any way. The old arguments about having to be online all the time are less applicable in these days of high speed internet and how many people can say they have fallen foul of not having enough uses to put a game on every system they want it on?

If Galaxy pushes Steam to up their record then, yes, that's a good thing. But I'm being totally honest when I say I've never had too many problems with what Steam/Valve does anyway. I guess I'm just not as picky or self-entitled as the majority of the internet.

It would be nice if the whole of PC gaming could come together and put everything in one place, really. For instance I would have liked to use my copy of The Witcher 3 fully through Steam.

People complained that they had to buy EA games through another catalog service, i.e Origin. Now when GoG looks set to challenge the Steam stronghold it's a marvellous thing for gaming.

@holifeet: one company having a monopoly is never good.

People complain about Origin mostly because of EA, the fact is Origin had the return policy way before Steam.

And I already told you the reasons why GOG chalanging Steam is a good thing, why wouldn't it be? Having a way more consumer friendly platform is never a bad thing ans probably will make Valve rethink their strategy too. Also, GOG has huge sales as well unlike Origin so you can see why people are excited.

I'm not promoting a monopoly fopr one company. I'd like to see PC gaming come together, in one place for the benefit of all PC gamers.

Playstation have the Playstation store; XBox has XBox live; PC gamers have in-fighting over which of the many catalog sites is the best. Spot the problem.

But, I will add that Valve are constantly pushed to upgrade Steam. Before the whole GoG Galaxy thing came along there was a big push to tidy up the Steam front page. They now offer a fully set out refunds policy.

I just want to see some unity, first and foremost. Though I would also like to see less unfair bitching towards Steam. DRM is not the devil.

@aiat_gamer: Download speeds were much slower for me with GOG when I tried downloading some other games, like not even a tenth of what I get on Steam. I also just want to have all my games in once place at this point. Maybe I'll give GOG another chance once their service matures a bit.

Never thought I'd use a different platform than steam. Gog.com changed that and I prefer it to steam. Steam really lost its appeal to me when they decided to charge for mods.

It sold around 540 000 copies in the first two weeks after release on Steam, so with the GOG Galaxy numbers it makes together more than 1,23 mil. copies sold of the PC version in those two weeks - BUT don't forget that not everyone who has GOG or retail version is using Galaxy to play the game, so the PC version could have sold around 1,5 in those two weeks - great numbers if you ask me :)

It's probably because Nvidia has been throwing in a free copy redeemable thru GOG with the purchase of a video card.

It might be different now, but the first few pirated releases of that game all required play it through "GOG Galaxy" so you could also say all the pirated copies of the game are being played through GOG too lol. Do those count??

@NickAnguiano: No. You don't need to install GOG Galaxy. The Witcher 3 is free of anything. Just install the game and play.

As for the retail version of the game, GOG Galaxy will automatically install, but you can uninstall it after game Installation and play the game withouth using GOG Galaxy. You can play the game without starting GOG Galaxy even while it is installed on your System, this is really not required.

I bought the Collecotr's Edition of the Game.

I think it's also because people who bought the physical PC copy were offered the chance to also play it through GoG.

Either way, some competition for Steam is good.

Another interesting figure in those stats is apparently (as of this post) only 51 people have completed 100% of the achievements. Considering how many people are playing this game, that's not a lot!
