More games released on Steam in 2014 already than during all of 2013

Is it possible for Steam to have too many games?

No Caption Provided

More games have been released on Steam just 20 weeks into 2014 than have been during all of 2013.

According to an Analysis from Gamasutra, the influx of new releases is thanks in part to Steam Greenlight, which has been adding as much as 75 games to Steam at a time recently.

Since Valve’s co-founder and managing director Gabe Newell previously said that the company’s goal is to “make Greenlight go away” and make Steam more of a self-publishing platform, it’s likely that we’ll only see the number of releases increase in the future.

It’s nice to have a huge selection of games to choose from, of course, but it also makes it hard for games from smaller developers to get noticed, and discovering the games you’re particularly interested in.

We can already see Valve trying to mitigate this problem with several crowdsourcing tools like user reviews, the ability to tag games, as well as report them for offensive content. Steam’s front page now also defaults to the “Top Sellers” tab instead of the “New Releases” tab, which turns over very quickly these days.

Do you think Steam has a problem of offering too many games? Let us know in the comments below.

I wonder what would happen if you took a lot of those inde games away and actually see how many games Steam really has.

@tommynj Indie games are games, too. A big budget does not make a game great.
(And on the other hand, an indie game isn't automatically great just because it's an indie game.)

Not to mention that a lot of indie titles are way more awesome than a lot of triple A ones.

I personally find it easy to ignore the crappier titles and the better ones are still all there if you want them.

It's not that surprising. Most mentally challeged people are voting every awful game on Greenlight and Steam has terrible quality control, if any. For this reason alone, I'll say yes, Steam has too many games and Greenlight has to die.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yes because Knack is a sure fire classic right?.

Why would anyone pay attention to poor games when there is so many great games on PC?. The PC has the most varied and unique games of any platform. If you are a PS4 gamer well nearly your whole library is being held up by years old PC games. You know , Planetside2 , Black Light Retribution, Outlast , Contrast , Octodad, War Thunder.

Of course I know why you are paying far too much attention to the shit games on PC and not the 10000's of great ones, it's because you are a dumb ass console troll trying ever so hard to convince himself that he isn't missing anything on PC.

I mean as a PC and console gamer I literally struggle to put time aside to play great console games like Mario Kart8 because there is just so much to be enjoyed on PC, so much so if I were short on cash the consoles would be the first to go before my PC and I would still have far too many great games to play.

I am looking forward to The Forest , Routine , Elite Dangerous , Star Citizen, Survarium, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter , DayZ , Fortnite, Next Car Game , Assetto Corsa to name a few up coming PC exclusives. I am already playing through and enjoying Shadow Warriors , Hawken , Planetside2, Titan Fall , DCS World , ARMA3, Torchlight2, Company of Heroes2 and this list doesn't even include all those multiplatform games that look and run so much better on PC.

You know , games like Batman Origins with full Directx11 next-gen visuals , PhysX and 3DTV support, Splinter Cell Blacklist, another game fully updated with next-gen Directx11 visuals yet absent from PS4 or XB1. Then of course Wolfenstein and Watchdogs, Outlast The Whistle Blower DLC.

What does your gaming schedule look like?. Apart from multiplatform games that look and run a bit shit compared to PC versions how long until The Order1886? Driveclub?. No wonder you are trying ever so hard to convince yourself that nearly every game on PC is shit lol

No such thing as to many games.

What they need is a review score system. One of their own, not a link to metacritic. Right now it's just thumbs up or down. Perhaps a score. And then an average score.

<< LINK REMOVED >> - The problem with review score systems is that (a) users can inflate/deflate scores at a whim if they like/dislike a company (rather than the game itself), and (b) it is open to abuse from alt accounts. It's not the best gauge. I would even trust metacritic scores over a 'user' scoring system.

Obviously because no one has to pay for boxes, CDs, and retailers any longer. It's cheaper for developers to release a PC game now that it's downloaded, and most of these games are cheaper in price to buy.

@TruSake It may be cheaper to release games digitally, but it sure as hell isn't cheaper for customers. Here in Norway, which is supposed to be in the top 2 of the most expensive countries in the world, AAA titles on Steam are just short of 25% more expensive than retail. Origin and Uplay also add 25% on top of the retail prices.

That new defaulting to Top Sellers has changed things dramatically imo. I know for myself, I now have to go fishing if I want to find an indie game.

No such thing as to many games. Competition is a good thing, and the top titles will gravitate upwards.

And this is with Greenlight in place. Please do not get rid of Greenlight, or at least have some filter on the games coming in. Not only will the new devs and games of quality not get noticed in the sea of games, but people will want to stop fishing in that sea of indie games to find gems.

And that's not to say that arbitrary filtering always works great. One of the oldest games on Steam waiting to be Greenlit was a cool looking wrestling game, it sat there for years (and may still be sitting). But there needs to be something.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Good point, or even if they all had demos. There's just no time, unless indie gaming is all one does. And that also includes the countless hours of sifting thru lists of indie games, reading user reviews for them, etc.
