More games released on Steam in 2014 already than during all of 2013

Is it possible for Steam to have too many games?

No Caption Provided

More games have been released on Steam just 20 weeks into 2014 than have been during all of 2013.

According to an Analysis from Gamasutra, the influx of new releases is thanks in part to Steam Greenlight, which has been adding as much as 75 games to Steam at a time recently.

Since Valve’s co-founder and managing director Gabe Newell previously said that the company’s goal is to “make Greenlight go away” and make Steam more of a self-publishing platform, it’s likely that we’ll only see the number of releases increase in the future.

It’s nice to have a huge selection of games to choose from, of course, but it also makes it hard for games from smaller developers to get noticed, and discovering the games you’re particularly interested in.

We can already see Valve trying to mitigate this problem with several crowdsourcing tools like user reviews, the ability to tag games, as well as report them for offensive content. Steam’s front page now also defaults to the “Top Sellers” tab instead of the “New Releases” tab, which turns over very quickly these days.

Do you think Steam has a problem of offering too many games? Let us know in the comments below.

It is amazing how many people are up in arms about early access. Can someone please explain to me the downside?

This is the way I see it. I pre-order a copy of a new game coming out in the fall. I spend 60$. Ok, I am reserved a copy. That is good, everyone is fine with that. However, if the game company says, "'INCLUDED' with your pre-order you also get early access to an unfinished product and creative input into the development process," they are now corrupt and evil?

You lose nothing with early access, but gain the ability, yet you are not forced, to play the "unfinished" game. You can choose to wait until the fall, just like a normal pre-order, to play it, and nothing changes. You also gain the ability to usually voice your opinion about things you do and do not like about the current state of the game. Meaning when the game officially launches, you can possibly say you had a part in the development. Also keep in mind, many companies doing this are smaller, low-budget companies that need the money now to "continue" development rather than running out of money mid development and having to shut the whole project down.

If MML3 would have had paid early access, then we would probably be able to have that game in our collection right now. SSBB might not have had dumb-ass tripping mechanics if it had early access. I am not saying there are "no" downsides, but it is hard for me to see them and it seems to me that there are actually plenty of positives.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I agree with your points Supness and support early access having seen how much the Wasteland 2 title has improved with fan input. The dev's put the early access price at double ($60) the new release price to be fair to the Kickstarters and filter out people who simply couldn't wait to play it. I think of it like the "developer's kit" the Oculus Rift guys sold a while back. People moaned it was a ripoff which, to me seemed unfair.

There are some big downsides to EA for players. An early release playthrough is like reading the script of a movie you're looking forward to seeing in the theater. It spoils the experience. Add to that patches that break saves and major changes to rules/interface/inventory and you have a recipe for some frustrating gaming. It shouldn't be seen as a chance to play the game early but an opportunity to influence direction of a title in a genre you care deeply about. I didn't participate in the Wasteland 2 EA because I didn't want to spoil my first playthrough but have been keeping up with the games evolution. I'm grateful for the 1,000's of people that made the sacrifice so that I can have a great first experience.

That is a very fair point. It is like reading the rough draft of a book, then when you read the final copy, you think "I have read half of this before, it kinda ruins it." I am going to feel that effect with Secrets of Grindea and its early access. I would like to point out another argument I saw, that I thought was fair is: you may never receive a finished product. If a company has to close up shop, then all you get is what is already there. Which really sucks.

Also, while I do agree that early access gaming(glitches/bugs/save wipes/constant updates/etc...) can be frustrating, I have to say that it is kind of expected with a game in alpha or beta. However, that brings me to another point: early access developers should be honest with what condition their game is in. Let people know: "early access at this time is very unstable. Expect bugs, crashes, failed saves, not much to do, etc... until we can get it into better shape." As long as they are honest I do not see the problem.

Except perhaps your money, when you realise you don't like the game, or the game turns into something you didn't want, or don't like.

It is always fair to say you don't personally like early access. I totally get that. Especially if you do not like "pre-ordering" in general. However, the fact that you do not like pre-ordering or early access does not mean they are bad things, even though I am sure each of them have a downside. Furthermore, there are great benefits to pre-ordering "sometimes." In cases like consoles(PS4, XB1), if you didn't pre-order, then, for the majority of people, you did not get a console at launch. Also some pre-orders come with free DLC, posters, accessories, and sometimes even with complete second game.

You see, i think there is the difference in mind set.

I don't pre-order, ever. There is absolutely no purpose or benefit to pre-ordering, except for the benefit of the company making the game.

I understand the point of early access, but i'm also not ignorant of its downsides, and those are enough to keep me away from it.

I think you are missing the point. Take a game like Starbound. It is in early access phase. Yes, watching videos now is not going to really show you what the "final" product will be, but it will give you an idea of what the final product will be "similar" too. It is the same thing with a game in beta. You may see a game at E3 and think... "I absolutely love it," so you pre-order it, but by the time it hits the shelves, the game has changed drastically in a way that you don't enjoy. That is the same chance you take with early access or pre-ordering. Except with early access, there is a possible, albeit small, chance that you could keep the game from changing for the worse by giving input.

I made a longer post, but for some unfathomable reason it got deleted.

To summarise: You would normally read reviews or watch videos of gameplay on youtube when a game actually gets released. That's rather impossible and pointless with an Early access game. Any critique of it is worthless, as the game could fundamentally change from one patch to the next.

While i do think there is a something to lose from buying into early access, there is also nothing to actually gain from it.

I used to look carefully at the ticker on Steam's homepage to see what interesting games were new or coming soon. Now that ticker often houses about 20 games, and I don't have the patience to go through them all.

But this isn't unlike the problem that most self-publishing outfits have. Google Play, the iTunes Store, and even comiXology can make it difficult to wade through all the selections and find compelling content. The answer will probably be that Steam has to separate its AAA games from it's indie Greenlight / Early Access stuff.

Steam seriously needs some form of quality control. They're allowing the store to be flooded with garbage. They also need a "new to steam" filtering option that way we can differentiate between actual new releases or older games that have been rereleased on steam. At this point the store front page is almost useless. Everything moves too fast other than the top sellers.

Of course. The flood gates are open on steam now.

Doesn't matter how broken, unfinished or unplayable your game is, on steam you can ask money for it.

There couldn't have been any user reviews for Earth 2066 if some people didn't waste their money on it.

And also, the dev paid people are asked his friends to write user reviews ...

Without a doubt the biggest issue isn't so much that there are too many new games, but that it's not as easy as it should be to become aware of them.

What was mentioned about the New Releases tab is very relevant, that tab should be displayed separately, maybe on the side, and display 20 games instead of 10, given the sheer quickness with which it moves.

Would also be neat if new releases that are tagged with things u have an interest in were displayed more prominently for you, like a personalized New Releases tab.

I like Gabe's view of letting anyone publish their games, but quality control does exist for a reason, so if they do away with Greenlight and basically let everything in, the current tools for discerning quality should be a bit more robust.

Too many games? Does Amazon sell too many products? The problem isn't the number of games. The problem is a terrible user interface that Steam needs to work on?

With better search, smarter recommendations, we can find the stuff we want to play faster. Right now it's frustrating because the filters are ineffective (everything is an rpg for example) and back-tabbing puts you back at the top of lists ignoring the place you were at in a list of 100 games. It's crap! I don't think there are too many games. I think Steam needs a redesigned user search system. Imagine if Amazon were that lame.

I don't want to limit the indie stuff. Heck I like a cheezy puzzle game now and then that most people hate. Like wise somebody else might like a cheap zombie fest that I would never buy. Don't limit choice. We all lose.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Great post. The analogy with Amazon is spot on. If they go the route of limiting the number of games that people can put out because their interface is garbage we all lose. The best thing is giving more ability for players to drive the reviews and the categorization of a game. There needs to be more granularity. Amazon would be a great model to look at because they do a great job of adding additional categories when needed and additional search options for popular categories.

Still Amazon does have some minimum expectations to be listed on their store. If you are late shipping even once or twice Amazon will quickly move to get you off their store. When I think of games like Towns that were essentially abandoned by developers while still taking people's money, that is where I think Steam needs to be more like Amazon in sending them warnings that unless they show progress and keep their promises to customers they will be dropped from the store.

Too many low quality indie titles and early access games that go nowhere. I'm up for giving opportunities to new developers, but this is getting out of hand. Steam is looking like a store full of ambitious kickstasters promising the world and beyond. And usually not delivering

Actually, most of the garbage being thrown onto steam recently ARE NOT indie games. Most tend to be the complete back-catalogues from obscure publishers, sometimes reaching as far back as games from the year 2000; games that were never on Steam originally, but Valve has now allowed them to dump their crap onto the store.

I'd rather have too many games than not enough. The more competition there is, the better it is for us because developers have to work harder to make games that stand out from the rest. Unlike on PS4 where any shitty indie game will get undeserved attention.

Yes, while I appreciate how open Steam is, I do wish titles had to pass quality control before being put in the store. Many publishers are just throwing their old games and mobile ports onto Steam now and it's flooding the market with many poor experiences.

Before steam was this open, there were just as many angry voices because they had to go to Desura or elsewhere, now all of a sudden it's too open and you guys don't have the time or patience to look at one more 8-bit retro block-based 2D platformer between your AAA titles.

The problem isn't more games. The problem is how you catalog them. They need a better system for organizing and finding what you want and than more won't be a problem. It will actually be better to have more.
