Modern Warfare 2 regains Call of Duty prefix

[UPDATE] Final box art for anticipated game carries name of original series; Activision confirms change, says title is series' "first true sequel."

When Modern Warfare 2 was announced during the Game Developers Choice Awards in March, it did not carry the same title prefix as its processor, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Ever since then, not one single television spot or announcement related to the game has referred to it as anything other than "Modern Warfare 2." Indeed, the name "Call of Duty" has been mentioned by publisher Activision only when referencing the game's developer, Santa Monica, California-based Infinity Ward.

Bask in the glory of the
Bask in the glory of the "first true sequel."

Now, though, Infinity Ward's director of communications and community manager has revealed that the prefix is back. In a Twitter post this afternoon, Robert Bowling announced that he "just received [sic] the first Modern Warfare 2 boxes straight off the press. 'S*** just got real.'" The accompanying photo (pictured) shows the box as bearing the title "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2."

[UPDATE] Activision has now confirmed the change with the following statement:

Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 is the direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. We have focused our attention on Modern Warfare in order to most effectively communicate the fact that this is the first true sequel in the Call of Duty series. Infinity Ward, the original creators of the Call of Duty franchise, has said from the beginning Modern Warfare 2 resides in the Call of Duty universe. This is reflected in the title's package.

The name change's timing comes just a few weeks after a study from tracking firm OTX (cited by GamaSutra) found that the game's awareness level amongst potential buyers dropped 20 percent when it did not have the Call of Duty prefix in the title.

The return of the COD prefix also quashes the widely held belief amongst game-industry watchers that Modern Warfare was being spun off into its own independent franchise. Activision hinted that such a move was in the works when the publisher said that subseries had "taken on a life of its own" three months ago. It also remains unclear if Modern Warfare 2 is the "unique new IP" that Infinity Ward teased when its leading developers renewed their contracts with Activision last summer.

@penorburger, you're PARTIALLY right. People love new kinds of games. When the Sims had came out, it was a new type of game and people loved it. Assassin's Creed was another unique game that people loved. If people wanted easy repetitive stuff we'd still be playing pac-man and digdug.

Sorry Versipells, lol. IW rely too much on overly scripting everything, no dynamic gameplay, everything is heavily scripted to the extreme, but again, the average 12 yr old doesn't care beceause he enjoys blasting wave after wave of enemies the exact same trigger point ina game, lol.

At first it would make sense to call it Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2, however it seems they decided against it because then some people would think ... oh so its just an expansion to COD4. Technically the game should be called Call of Duty 6: Modern Warfare 2, but then again they dropped the sequel numbers after COD4 (Call of Duty: World at War). All in all it makes sense to name it Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It looks like from here on out there won't be sequel numbers unless they are direct sequels to previous COD titles. In response to Strategygamer22 "If this is a sequal to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, then shouldn't this be titled Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2. Maybe they think that many numbers would confuse people?"

Exactly like the sims, for shooters at least, how different is this gonna be, all COD games play the same as COD 1, outdated linear, endless spawns, terrible pyhysics. terrible AI, endless wave after wave of dumb enemies, done in 5 hours. Overrated, neg rep all you want, this is all todays casual console gamer wants, easy games and doing the same thing over and over without thought.

Aj was right, same game, charging 60 bucks, the Sims of shooters. Most overrated games ever, at least the original HALo did actually do something new for its time. Watch the mindless sheep defend it like I banged theri mom, truth hurts. This is all todays easy, casual gamer wants.

Notice how Activision has left out any image of a PS3 version? I see a PC and Xbox 360 box, but no PS3... oooh turning up the flames on the Sony coal train for a reduced price.

I would prefer if treyarch sererated from infinty ward, so that treyarch would go down. But I guess not many people would realise what modern warfare 2 is unless it has cod in front of it.

Very funny all these PR power struggles... Activision vs Sony a few days ago, then this... Here I guess, Infinity Ward wanted to split from Treyarch with a brand new IP and then Activision came and said: I want to maximize the sales so you will continue mixing your games with Treyarch's. Anyway I dont care actually.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I guess it won't really matter, I won't be able to play it anyways. But the Call of Duty logo on the box just doesn't seem to match with the Modern Warfare 2 logo very well.

Why not call it Call of Duty 4 Version 2.0? We, the real gamers and potential buyers, all know that this is a sequel without needing the prefix.

Just call MW2, so easy. -_- I hated world at war.Zombies and far too many dogs ruined the game.I bought it and took it back the next day.Looking forward to MW2 though.Hopefully the guns sound real this time.Never should a large machine gun just sound like a large popgun.

Your comment is pretty shallow imyour13thstep, at least considering everyone said the same thing about call of duty going modern and about call of duty: world at war.

What the trailers and stage demo make of this game is that it's an action movie. It looks cool that way but I hope they won't over do it.

i hope all you die hard fans dont get any suicideal tendicies when this game fails. Seems kinda cheesy from what I seen of this game so far. I mean call of duty 4 modern warfare was the $hizzy but just cause its modern warefare 2 doesnt mean it lays gold eggs. So all you kids make sure you read the reviews before you spend your parents hard earned dollars on this game. But lets hope for the best!!!8)

Every cod game plays the same, restricted, linear, short, bad AI, retarded endless spawn and trigger points, perfect for todays mindless console gamers. COD is becoming the SIMS of shooters, new game every year for 60 bucks which is identical to the last.
