Modern Warfare 2 regains Call of Duty prefix

[UPDATE] Final box art for anticipated game carries name of original series; Activision confirms change, says title is series' "first true sequel."

When Modern Warfare 2 was announced during the Game Developers Choice Awards in March, it did not carry the same title prefix as its processor, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Ever since then, not one single television spot or announcement related to the game has referred to it as anything other than "Modern Warfare 2." Indeed, the name "Call of Duty" has been mentioned by publisher Activision only when referencing the game's developer, Santa Monica, California-based Infinity Ward.

Bask in the glory of the
Bask in the glory of the "first true sequel."

Now, though, Infinity Ward's director of communications and community manager has revealed that the prefix is back. In a Twitter post this afternoon, Robert Bowling announced that he "just received [sic] the first Modern Warfare 2 boxes straight off the press. 'S*** just got real.'" The accompanying photo (pictured) shows the box as bearing the title "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2."

[UPDATE] Activision has now confirmed the change with the following statement:

Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 is the direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. We have focused our attention on Modern Warfare in order to most effectively communicate the fact that this is the first true sequel in the Call of Duty series. Infinity Ward, the original creators of the Call of Duty franchise, has said from the beginning Modern Warfare 2 resides in the Call of Duty universe. This is reflected in the title's package.

The name change's timing comes just a few weeks after a study from tracking firm OTX (cited by GamaSutra) found that the game's awareness level amongst potential buyers dropped 20 percent when it did not have the Call of Duty prefix in the title.

The return of the COD prefix also quashes the widely held belief amongst game-industry watchers that Modern Warfare was being spun off into its own independent franchise. Activision hinted that such a move was in the works when the publisher said that subseries had "taken on a life of its own" three months ago. It also remains unclear if Modern Warfare 2 is the "unique new IP" that Infinity Ward teased when its leading developers renewed their contracts with Activision last summer.

Heck with the title! I just care about the gameplay. If it's good, I'm happy. If the name's not what I expected...who cares? The important part is who's creating the game and, since it's still Infinity Ward, I'm sure there will be nothing to worry about!

Why do people even care that it has Call of Duty as the prefix? Yes, I am a fan of CoD games and have been since the first game, and so what? And I also love (and own) Modern Warfare. I'm not understanding why people get all riled up over others liking games they don't. Again, SO WHAT?! If you don't like CoD games, good, fine, bully for you. But if the worst part of your day is discovering that the CoD prefix has been returned to where it was in the first place, I feel bad for you. Soooo... what? Having that in the title is going to somehow affect you enjoying the game? Please, give me a break. The move was business smart and logical; you keep the new fanbase, maintain a long-standing one within the CoD community and make it clear for new ones that may come aboard.

I think this is a HUGE mistake. Separating Modern Warfare from the WWII games was a great idea. Doing WWII, then Modern, then WWII, then Modern all under the COD name is stupid.

To Henniger, hater? It's a game hardly hate it, lol. Just fact, it is vastly overated, don't worry, I would not spend 60 bucks on another COD game that plays the same as the other 5 or 6, however many they are on now. People throw the word hate around just becasue someone doesn't like something, geez, is the human race getting as dumb as it seems?

A sensible move... the 'COD' brand holds a lot of water in the marketplace, and it'd be foolish to not cash in on that.

Wow im c'in a lot of COD haters on these comments. Well my message 2 yall is, if u dont like the game dont buy it. & y waste ur time comin on here bashing the game if u dont like it? If u dont like the game y r u on here reading the article in the 1st place? Just some food 4 thought. Anywayz i personally like the fact that the Call of Duty name is back on the game. I would've gotten this game either way but Infinity Ward should definately keep the Call of Duty name on their franchise.

This post is all about if it is a sequel or not? What a waste of everyone's time, ours, Infinity ward and GS's. I don't care if it is a sequel or not, what does it matter and I certainly don't care what is on the cover. It could have a picture of male anatomy for all I care, I won't be looking at it, I be playing it.

i dunno why people are complaining about the call of duty title on the cover looking "slapped on" because its got that old call of duty title that was on the cover of the first one and now its on here with the new flashy "modern warfare 2" title which i think makes it look pretty nice

I count my lucky stars I have a gaming PC, Online community is much more mature, Mods, still some hardcore games around on it that, GASP, actually offer a bit of a challenge and thought.. Sure, there are kids, losers online on PC as well, just a lot less common, they are the norm on Xbox live, enough to turn me off altogether from playing online on my 360. PS: Anyone want to buy a 360 pro?

change the name all they want, it's still the same repackaged game as the rest of their "Call of Duty's" Companies and sequels suck because they never want to stray far from what made the 1st game great but at the same time almost nothing is added which makes it just a repackaged expansion pack of the 1st. This is a FPS so not much to expect.

a note to everyone: if you buy cod, you will be killing hardcore gaming forever, meaning sites like gamespot, ign, and cvg will not be around in about 10 years. If you keep on buying mainstream rubbish you are fueling the death of hardcore gaming. Its your choice.

Screaming 12 year olds who call every gay are the norm not just in COD games, unfortunately they are all over Xbox live, online gaming is vastly overrated and annoying. Nothing more annoying then some punk who thinks its cool to make insults and vulgarities at strangers because he is protected behind his/her TV/Monitor.

No, i don't think there's gonna be a COD7 name, after this sequel, they should change the name or do something like name the next game as "Modern Warfare 3". In this industry, label is everything, it help u sell more and sooner or later, will help u sell less.

I'm mixed about how the cover art looks. I hope they have a different one for the CE. I know I definitely do NOT like how they just pasted "Call of Duty" onto the cover. It does look like a last minute slap job and just seems...out of place. And just noticed that the background pic seems to resemble the Capital Building in D.C...hmmm.

I think the title should remain as it is. It is not 5 or 6. There are alot of many titles that Activision let develop that really didn't go anywhere... hopefully Infinity Ward will stay as the only developer from now on... Treyarse, you need to stick with spiderman or something else...

They could of spin-off'ed it and just gone Modern Warfare 2. They could of called it something like Generic Shooter and labled it as a new IP... but at the end of the day it's stil Call Of Duty. So the naming makes sense. People seem to be moaning about the single player, but at the end of the day who ever talks about the single player? When ever I hear about people talking about CoD it's always about online... Never been a fan TBH. I'm waiting for MAG.

If you like COD games, cool I got no problem, but what bothers me is how people make like it is gaming royalty, it is simply just popular, hardly an indication of great art in todays society (See britney spears, Movies, etc..). People brag how realistic it is, lol, PLAY arma II PC, a realistic military sim, COD is nothing more then a heavy arcade shooter which is nothing close to realistic. games are HUGE dollars now, gaming is becoming like the movie and music biz. Which is bad.
