Modern Warfare 2 regains Call of Duty prefix

[UPDATE] Final box art for anticipated game carries name of original series; Activision confirms change, says title is series' "first true sequel."

When Modern Warfare 2 was announced during the Game Developers Choice Awards in March, it did not carry the same title prefix as its processor, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Ever since then, not one single television spot or announcement related to the game has referred to it as anything other than "Modern Warfare 2." Indeed, the name "Call of Duty" has been mentioned by publisher Activision only when referencing the game's developer, Santa Monica, California-based Infinity Ward.

Bask in the glory of the
Bask in the glory of the "first true sequel."

Now, though, Infinity Ward's director of communications and community manager has revealed that the prefix is back. In a Twitter post this afternoon, Robert Bowling announced that he "just received [sic] the first Modern Warfare 2 boxes straight off the press. 'S*** just got real.'" The accompanying photo (pictured) shows the box as bearing the title "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2."

[UPDATE] Activision has now confirmed the change with the following statement:

Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 is the direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. We have focused our attention on Modern Warfare in order to most effectively communicate the fact that this is the first true sequel in the Call of Duty series. Infinity Ward, the original creators of the Call of Duty franchise, has said from the beginning Modern Warfare 2 resides in the Call of Duty universe. This is reflected in the title's package.

The name change's timing comes just a few weeks after a study from tracking firm OTX (cited by GamaSutra) found that the game's awareness level amongst potential buyers dropped 20 percent when it did not have the Call of Duty prefix in the title.

The return of the COD prefix also quashes the widely held belief amongst game-industry watchers that Modern Warfare was being spun off into its own independent franchise. Activision hinted that such a move was in the works when the publisher said that subseries had "taken on a life of its own" three months ago. It also remains unclear if Modern Warfare 2 is the "unique new IP" that Infinity Ward teased when its leading developers renewed their contracts with Activision last summer.

LOL @ the guy who said Zombies and co-op were knew. Zombies and co-op have been done in other games for years and done better, and zombies wre a cheap and sad way for the devs to try something new, Zombies do not even fit with a COD game. Sorry, but if it takes 6 COD games just to see zombies and co-op, well, I rest my case, these games are all the same as the first COD in 2000, but, that's all today's casual mainstream gamer wants.

Bungie makes games with stories? Okay. Having sold video games for several years, I would say keeping the CoD prefeix is a fantastic idea for sales. There are a LOT of stupid people out there that would see it, even with the striking box art resemblence, and not have a clue it was a sequel to CoD4. The rest of us get it, but this is to sell to the amazing number or morons out there that can't figure these things out. As a fan, I think it is a bit disappointing...but as a retailer, I can fully understand why its being done.

just release it as multiplayer and leave stories to companies like Valve or Bungie who actually make stories, enough with the terrorist hunts

this is most definitely a money-related decision from Activi$ion, not Infinity Ward. i don't care about the name change but seriously, acti will do just about anything for a little extra $$$.

Good, at least they kept the Call of Duty prefix in it because a lot of people know that Call of Duty games are awesome and if some people just saw Modern Warfare 2, they wouldn't buy it because they wouldn't know if it was a call of duty game to some newcomers. But Call of Duty will always be awesome. The Battlefield series is catching up and I'm starting to like Battlefield more than Call of Duty now.

It would be nice if you could import some stuff from MW1 so as to not have wasted all that time with character class building... I'm not saying that you automatically get maxed out, but you could get some cool unlockable stuff to start out with for the things you earned the first time around..

s0o0o stoked about this game. Im sure the single player experience will be fun and anxious to see if they do a mission like the AC-130 gunship mission in COD4. I can't wait til they give more info into multiplayer cuz we all know thats where its at!!!

@ JGoWild, Considering todays economic condition activision should try to earn as much money as possible and they're doing that so is that really something to disrespect them for?

Im just clad I can refer to it as Cod6 now. Instead of saying I'm playing mw2. You can pronounce cod and 4 or 5 or 6 in a conversation but you cant pronounce m and w. mweh2? No thankkks.

I'm loosing a lot of respect for Activision day by day. Just look how greedy they are, 20% drop and already changed the name. I wouldn't care if it had the "Call Of Duty" tag or not. If I like the game, I will buy it, no matter what. But activision wants to sell more with the name rather than the game.

Those 20% must be newbs. CoD in the title didn't change a thing for me, I know who is making it and we all know it is a sequel. I can't wait till this game comes out! WaW didn't cut it for me.

Lol. Once I said it's not CoD anymore. Lol. It seems that I was wrong. That was before this was released. It would have been cool that it would have started a new line of games that would be seperate from CoD, but I quess that this is how it should be. It's stupid when people say "CoD42", title Call of Duty 4- 2 would be... would be like Rambo II- First blood part II. CoD: MW2 is better.

The only name change that would make this game sell better was if they called it Call of Booty. Otherwise it don't matter.

I think that single-player and Splitscreen, because while Online is usually the most fun, some point in the future the game's servers will have been shut down, like for Splinter Cell 3 :(.

I'll be buying this game IF it has a solid single-player mode. Online is fun for a wee while but single-player is what I buy games for after all.

I could care less whether or not the Call of Duty prefix was ever added, i don't care, I would still see it as a CoD game no matter what and wouldn't make a difference to the game play.

I'm going to buy the game regardless as long as it remains what everyone expects. They could call the game "Pretty Pink Pony Adventures: Modern Warfare 2" and I would still purchase it as long as it is a good game.

It does look kinda cheap how they just Photoshopped the CoD logo into the already existing art. Beyond that, not a big deal.

Sure you guys don't care about the name, but there are always people who make a little fuss about changes in names for sequels and like to speculate about what it might mean for the future of the franchise, direction of the game, etc... But I just wish I could get my hands on it soon, maybe a Beta, i got into the last 2 :).

@DrKill09 COD is a big brand and one that a lot of people know even if they have never played a game. attaching Cod in front just makes the game more recognizable as part of a proven series. also they will no longer be making WWII games, there was an interview with one of the heads of treyarch a while back and he said they werent planning on doing anymore WWII games.
