Modern Warfare 2 regains Call of Duty prefix

[UPDATE] Final box art for anticipated game carries name of original series; Activision confirms change, says title is series' "first true sequel."

When Modern Warfare 2 was announced during the Game Developers Choice Awards in March, it did not carry the same title prefix as its processor, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Ever since then, not one single television spot or announcement related to the game has referred to it as anything other than "Modern Warfare 2." Indeed, the name "Call of Duty" has been mentioned by publisher Activision only when referencing the game's developer, Santa Monica, California-based Infinity Ward.

Bask in the glory of the
Bask in the glory of the "first true sequel."

Now, though, Infinity Ward's director of communications and community manager has revealed that the prefix is back. In a Twitter post this afternoon, Robert Bowling announced that he "just received [sic] the first Modern Warfare 2 boxes straight off the press. 'S*** just got real.'" The accompanying photo (pictured) shows the box as bearing the title "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2."

[UPDATE] Activision has now confirmed the change with the following statement:

Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 is the direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. We have focused our attention on Modern Warfare in order to most effectively communicate the fact that this is the first true sequel in the Call of Duty series. Infinity Ward, the original creators of the Call of Duty franchise, has said from the beginning Modern Warfare 2 resides in the Call of Duty universe. This is reflected in the title's package.

The name change's timing comes just a few weeks after a study from tracking firm OTX (cited by GamaSutra) found that the game's awareness level amongst potential buyers dropped 20 percent when it did not have the Call of Duty prefix in the title.

The return of the COD prefix also quashes the widely held belief amongst game-industry watchers that Modern Warfare was being spun off into its own independent franchise. Activision hinted that such a move was in the works when the publisher said that subseries had "taken on a life of its own" three months ago. It also remains unclear if Modern Warfare 2 is the "unique new IP" that Infinity Ward teased when its leading developers renewed their contracts with Activision last summer.

It doesn't need the CoD name, the first Modern Warfare was great, by now, people know it's the sequel, so they could call it Fluffy Bunnies of Doom if they wanted. I would still get it first day. (That would be a cool minigame lol.)

I'm glad it did so it feels more like a series and less like its own game.

I don't really care if it bears the CoD name or not. It doesn't really look or feel any different from the first one anyway, so what does it matter? I'm just looking forward to playing Special Forces and Multiplayer, and that's that.

It dont really matter to me if it has it or not but it would seem messed up if it didnt, the prefix showes how far along Call of Duty has came.

I don't care if this game carries the "Call of Duty" prefix. I just hope single player won't be as short as Modern Warfare's... Looking extremely forward to this. Prolly game of the year 2009. Watch my words.

I Say Keep The "Call of Duty" Name. I Just Don't Wanna See the Call of Duty Franchise Going To "Call of Duty 17: We Like Men!," lets just keep it under the CoD Name. And, Infinity Ward's Still Working With Activision, it's not going "on a life of its own!" I'd Love To Get A REAL Boxshot, instead of a desk in the background, and a thumb taking up half of the boxshot cover.

Keeping the CoD prefix is nice and all, but wasn't the last game referred to as CoD4, then followed with Modern Warfare? I suppose its better than having a 5 and a 2 in the main title, but either way... I just wanna play the game :P

As long as the gameplay is good the name doesn't matter. But I guess it's a good thing so that people recognize the title and remember the greatness of CoD4.

i think this is a smart move. the title "modern warfare 2" just doesn't stand out to me ~ i have never cared for it. it sounds like something you would find in a bargain bin. the "call of duty" name is established and you know the name alone sold a lot of copies of Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare making it the #1 game that it is. Infinity Ward should totally keep the rights of making COD modernized and Treyarch (sp?) should stick to the world war II theme. they did a good job with World At War. but i don't see any harm in both companies keeping the "call of duty" prefix.

Maybe to boost sales Activision should rename it to Call Of Duty: Guitar Hero Warfare? Jokes aside, as the long as the game is good the name doesn't matter much.

Hmmm... 20%, eh? That means at least 20% of the buyers are Call of Duty fanboys. I knew the name wouldn't last.

I could care less either way. Its just a name and i do understand why they did what they did. although it seems like they keep they CoD name its milking the series. If they change it to Modern Warfare 2 they would lose customers. Im not a big fan of the CoD series and i believe its an over rated war game but i will still buy it and im sure it will just be another CoD game and nothing new to games. I'll play it but i think their is other games to look more forward to than this and now i just think its all marketing just like halo. Good game with way to much hype. I wont mention other games cause this is gamespot and everybody seems to try to make a console war on gamespot. So i will take my thumbs down for telling my honest opinion.

I think they were acid the entire time they were thinking this game should lose the CoD prefix; unless the storyline and characters are changed, it wouldn't make sense to cut it off.

So there are actually a bunch of idiots (20%) out there who are not aware of what Modern Warfare 2 is without the Call of Duty prefix. Wow. I certainly don't want those same idiots on my team in multi player matches.

dont use the prefix. call of duty 4 was special because it just wasnt another WWII game. Its a whole other game than call of duty. just call it modern warfare 2.

Next topic should the game begin when you press A or Start...anyway keep COD or leave it (although the first was called COD:MWF) if the game isn't good it won't matter, right now it looks great and people want the game

Good. In a way I think they had to do this. You wouldn't believe how many people wouldn't understand that this game is the true sequel to COD4, and not COD W@W. Just not having the name "Call of Duty" will confuse people to think this has nothing to do with the COD series.

Activision makes way too much money off of the CoD franchise to let their developers give the games any other title. From a sales standpoint this could have been seen coming from a mile away; that's fanchise gaming for you.

Gamestop still has MF2 listed as "Call of Duty 6" in there system. I was a bit suprised when I looked at my preorder receipt and saw that. But regardless of what the full title is, it is still gonna be frickin sweet.
