Miyamoto says PS Vita needs games

Mario creator acknowledges abilities of Sony's latest handheld, but says it doesn't have the software-hardware combination that makes for a strong product.

The PlayStation Vita has struggled in the sales charts, and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto thinks he knows why. Speaking to Edge, Miyamoto suggested the Sony system's software isn't matching the abilities of the hardware.

Shigeru Miyamoto has some recent experience launching hardware without the right software.
Shigeru Miyamoto has some recent experience launching hardware without the right software.

"It's obviously a very hi-spec machine, and you can do lots of things with it," Miyamoto said, "But I don't really see the combination of software and hardware that really makes a very strong product."

Miyamoto expressed a similar sentiment about the 3DS's initial struggles after launch.

"When we launched the 3DS hardware we didn't have Super Mario 3D Land, we didn't have Mario Kart 7, we didn't have Kid Icarus: Uprising," he told Edge. "We were striving to have all of these ready for the launch, but we weren't able to deliver them at that time. We were kind of hoping that people would, nevertheless, buy into the product, find 3DS hardware promising, but looking back we have to say we realize the key software was missing when we launched the hardware."

Nintendo spurred the system's retail success with a substantial price cut mere months after launch, and a holiday lineup of games included Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land. Though the cut has Nintendo selling the 3DS at a loss and contributed to the company's first-ever annual shortfall, the company has said it expects to rebound for the current fiscal year.

Like Miyamoto should talk, the 3DS had no titles worth buying at launch, and it still doesn't have much. VIta had a wwwwwaaaaayyyy stronger start.

Isn't it common for a system to need "games" the first year a system comes out? That's why i stopped buying game systems the first year. Sony surely knows this and are making games for it but it takes time for quality.

Whoa, whoa, whoa...Hold on a sec! If I am correct in remembering this, the 3DS was in no different a position this time last year.

Besides, give it a few months, and games'll come out for it like wildfire!

You know it's not often you see a company complementing (though it was a little backhanded) its competitor he earned a little respect from me.

Wow Miyamoto, take some of your own advice, or do you actally think the 3DS is selling well now because it has a killer library of games? It couldn't at all be because the price was slash in half before the thing was even 6 months old, naw coudn't be! lol

That's ironic, I'm pretty sure the 3DS had only five games on launch and only one or two of them were worth playing.

It's like Sony is refusing to put out content for the system. There is maybe 20 games for the Vita and it's been out since Feb. There should be at least 50 to 80 games for it by now.

Nobody will buy a 300 dollar hardware just because it's "promising". All that matter is the games you have to play with it! Like Wii. It have 20 games tops (mostly made by Nintendo) that are worth buying the console for, and a gazillion mediocre 3rd party games.

Lol, all consoles always have room for improvements, even for a giant like Miyamoto, his companies need some third party support as well

@beast70 Flop? What? You need to look at the numbers again, I think. It had a slow start which Miyamoto fully acknowledged, but it outsold the original DS in first year sales by a strong margin.

After the 3DS success I can't believe YOU would even say something so stupid.

@AgentRaven77 And you know this how? Because you know every single person who plays Nintendo games? Why does every game that appeals to every age group have to be considered for kids? Are you really so self-entitled that you can't accept a kid having fun?

There hasn't been a must-have game yet for either system. I rushed to buy a DS and PSP at launch. I saw no reason to give those up and buy these newer iterations.

@Land-0-Funk 3DS has a few more titles than the Vita. Unfortunately it's the standard Nintendo fare, Mario, Zelda, ect. Nintendo needs something new.

I agree with him, but I don't think that Nintendo is one to talk, given their history of creating radical systems with practically only first-party titles at launch.

The only thing I'm waiting for, and the only thing I want right now, are PS1 CLASSICS! It's so wrong that I prefer to take my old PSP with me, instead of my Vita, because of my large collection of PS1 Classics I still don't have access to for the Vita...

From the headline, I was expecting to see some unwittingly ironic smacktalk from Miyamoto, but then he had to go and admit that the 3DS fell prey to the same problem, and he ended up sounding fair and reasonable. Darn. Hahaha.

Lack of games is the exact reason I haven't gotten one. It's all shiny and definitely boasts features worthy of the price and hardware, but there just aren't enough games to launch the sales.

I would had bought a Vita if most of the good games on it wasn't already on systems I already own. Ninja Gaiden Plus, Mortal Kombat 9, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extended, Street Fighter X Tekken, Disgaea 3, all those games I already own a much better version on the PS3. The only good new games on the Vita at the moment are WipeOut 2048, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, and Hot Shot Golf: World Invitational and I'm not a fan of any of those games. If only they made a sequel to The Legend of Dragoon or Vagrant Story exclusively on Vita (not PS3, not PSP, not PS4, just Vita) then I would buy the Vita just for that one game alone.

And let's not forget that the DS flew off shelves and had no major release for like a goddamn year. So unless you were somehow excited to Super Mario 64 again(which sadly many were) then you were stuck with the demo for metroid prime. I remember getting Star Wars Episode 3 just to have SOMETHING to play on my DS. PSP had so many fun games though like Ridge Racer, Lumines, Twisted Metal, and even Need for Speed wasn't that bad. Speaking of PSP that's another reason Vita isn't selling because PSP is still getting new games and people already have a huge backlog like me lol. Vita will do better though moving forward and is far superior to 3DS although I don't think Miyamoto will ever admit that.

It has tons of games I'd like to play. The reason it isn't selling is it's high price point and I'm sure a lot of people are holding out for the inevitable redesign.

Do people even carry Vitas and 3ds around with them or do they just use them at home or on road trips because having a wallet in one pocket a cellphone and vita or 3ds in your other pockets that leaves one pocket left what if my hands get cold I can't put two hand in one pocket!

Guys I guess we are going to need to get a fanny packs or a man purses for all our gadgets

@killlo I take both of them (3DS & Vita) to work with me. Not like I have time to always play them, but should things get slow, I'm golden. Cargo work pants work wonders for carrying these systems.

That's pretty much exactly what I think about the Vita. The 3DS had no games back when the Vita launch was announced, but it managed to improve significantly since then. Here's hoping the Vita does the same.

Is funny how a Nintendo game maker...back in the Golden days...can say something that has been true of Nintendo systems for about 10+ years...which rely on refurbished remakes of the same old game.

He's not wrong about it needing games, but in all seriousness, I personally thought that what the Vita had available on day one alone was still better than the line up the 3DS had managed by the end of year one.

I've owned a 3DS since launch and I've only had a Vita about two months and I've got the same number of games for both at this point. Though it's worth noting that I have yet to encounter a Vita game with controls half as broken as those I found in Resi Revelations and Kid Icarus.

Seriously, that camera in Kid Icarus is pathetic.
