Miyamoto says PS Vita needs games

Mario creator acknowledges abilities of Sony's latest handheld, but says it doesn't have the software-hardware combination that makes for a strong product.

The PlayStation Vita has struggled in the sales charts, and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto thinks he knows why. Speaking to Edge, Miyamoto suggested the Sony system's software isn't matching the abilities of the hardware.

Shigeru Miyamoto has some recent experience launching hardware without the right software.
Shigeru Miyamoto has some recent experience launching hardware without the right software.

"It's obviously a very hi-spec machine, and you can do lots of things with it," Miyamoto said, "But I don't really see the combination of software and hardware that really makes a very strong product."

Miyamoto expressed a similar sentiment about the 3DS's initial struggles after launch.

"When we launched the 3DS hardware we didn't have Super Mario 3D Land, we didn't have Mario Kart 7, we didn't have Kid Icarus: Uprising," he told Edge. "We were striving to have all of these ready for the launch, but we weren't able to deliver them at that time. We were kind of hoping that people would, nevertheless, buy into the product, find 3DS hardware promising, but looking back we have to say we realize the key software was missing when we launched the hardware."

Nintendo spurred the system's retail success with a substantial price cut mere months after launch, and a holiday lineup of games included Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land. Though the cut has Nintendo selling the 3DS at a loss and contributed to the company's first-ever annual shortfall, the company has said it expects to rebound for the current fiscal year.

@Vampire64 I don't think the PS Vita sucks.... as any other competitive gaming gadget it has lots of potential; although Miyamoto is right about how the lack of software titles (casual and/or hardcore) is hurting the hardware sales.

@robertwarnes91 VITA's poor sales in Japan is actually due to the still amazing popularity of PSP, mass popularity of mobile gaming, and the price of VITA. (and of course because lot of people bought 3DS)VITA 3g price in Japan was RIDICULOUS compared to here. And over here in Japan, PSP is still amazingly popular. There are great new games being churned out every month and they are topping the charts. (Over here a new PSP game goes up to near 70~80 dollars and people still buy them like hotcakes) With all that, there was no single convincing point to move on to the PSP Vita yet. Especially with the weak titles. It's not that the titles were western oriented... they were just not at all interesting. Of course VITA had the graphics and etc improvement but as of yet that meant nothing for the "better gameplay" department which is what most people care about. This is evident by how many people simply play their games on their phone these days. This is a hot topic in Japan and many game companies focused jump on the mobile gaming train.Side note: this is why Japan overall fell behind on the CG department because they focused their direction to portable and mobile gaming.... and are sending out their CG departments to US and Korea to learn more about CG.

Yep.. the reason why I haven't gotten the PS Vita yet is the lack of games.. I mean where's the hardcore games? the only hardcore game i see is "Uncharted" and all the others are just Mini-games and what not. :o. in the launch of PSP we had Crisis Core, GoW and many more.. I'm just waiting for the right launch of games for me to buy the Vita.

PS Vita is an awesome handheld gaming machine and definitely will allow an old person like me to play games comfortably while taking a rest in my room on or in my bed. I am 39 and I find staring at a tv and sitting on the floor is getting harder and harder to do and still then enjoy playing games while doing this. I also don't even like sitting at a computer as much anymore. I tried out Hotshot Golf in Toys R Us and loved it. I can't wait to get my hands on this at some point. I highly recommend this thing for people getting older and still wanting to game ..... as long as your eyes can stand the small screen.

As someone who brought a 3DS and a Vita at launch, I can tell you Sony did a much better job. The 3DS launched in Australia with only 10 games, all of which were solveware and ports. Plus none of them were oriignal IPs. With the Vita, if you count downloadable only titles, there were 30 titles at launch for the Vita in Australia. Many of which were original IPs (Reality Fighters, Little Deviants, Army Corps of Hell and Escape Plan). We even had a killer app (Uncharted), something the 3DS lacked at launch. You can't compare the 3DS with the Vita. The 3DS has had a full year head start, giving developers more time to get games out. Plus let's not forget the 3DS has had a price cut and the Vita's game library is more Western orientated, which explains the poor sales in Japan.

Yeah, you gotta repeat your franchises early on... Nintendo knows all about that safe plan of action. Super Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart, Pokemon, repeat ad nauseum.

A lot of haters here today. Considering what Nintendo went through with the 3DS launch, they know what they're talking about. Sony faithful are buying the Vita the same way Nintendo faithful bought the 3DS, and as much as we like to believe true "fans" can carry the weight of a system, there's more than enough proof that that line of thinking is WRONG! You aren't going to sway a Sony fan with a new Mario Kart, that same way you aren't going to sway a Nintendo fan with a new Uncharted.

He apparently got the names of the 3DS and Vita backwards. The 3ds HAS NO GAMES. The Vita has plenty of games.

He's just pissed he and his company are long in the tooth.

Am I the only one who thinks the Vita DOESN'T need a price cut? I mean sure it would be nice to pay less for one and it would improve sales but, what I mean is, unlike the 3DS the price tag is actually justified imo considering the power and technology being offered. The 3DS is at a more reasonable price for what it offers but I think the Vita is as well.

Who cares? Vita will eventually have lots of good games, and I have to say the Vita is the closest a handheld has ever been to replicating the home console experience. I don't own one yet, but I am definitely tempted. Those damn analog sticks or whatever, they feel amazing. I actually find the controls more comfortable than holding a Dual Shock 3, which also gives me hope that the Wii U's controls will be pleasant, despite not having giant analog sticks.

Nintendo were in the same boat with the 3DS. The price cut in combination with games like Mario Land helped it to take off. By the end of this year the 3DS should have a solid library. The Vita needs a price cut and games, else I suspect it will not see success.

Sony Bragged about killer Library Vita Launch, than delayed alot of games, so they add apps into Vita to cover their foot in mouth.

It's nice that he admits the Vita's potential...but yeah, everyone knows the Vita's real problem is the lack of software for it...just like the 3DS was struggling with. Would the 3DS have sold as well without the price cut? No. Would sales have improved when Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 came out regardless? Definitely.

I agree with Miyamoto. The PS Vita is a great handheld, but there aren't too many appealing games out there that would make it fly off the shelves. Some games feel too similar to PS3 games. Not to mention the price is a little high for some people.

I like how he politely says this and not in a biased way. He even acknowledged his own mistake with the Nintendo 3DS launch. I do agree that the 3DS would have done better at launch if games like Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 were out by then. I did like the system when I first got in on launch day, but it was a little shallow.

I hope the Nintendo 3DS and PS Vita do well in the future. Both are great handhelds. :)

P.S. Going off topic: No offense, Miyamoto-san, but I stop playing Nintendo consoles (NES, Game Boy and SNES) when I switch to Sony back in Christmas of '98.

Miyamoto never misses a chance to advertise his products whilst 'commentating' on a rivals system. He even listed three of his first party titles too! I would think Gamespot wouldn't give him the free advert, really.

The PS Vita is an amazing piece of hardware but the steep price and the short battery life really convinced me to wait for a newer, cheaper model.

I have both systems, got them at lunch too. I agree with the software comment but I do haft to admit that looking at the vita only being out around 2 months it has a better lineup of software (not counting legacy software) than the 3DS did in its first 6 months. With the 3DS take away Zelda, Mario land 3D, and Kin Iccurs and there not much left.

3DS still doesn't have crap outside of Japan, unless you count games from the N64 era or before. Mine's been a total waste of a money so far, especially since I bought it at release. I really should have either saved my money or just bought a Vita instead, but I was afraid of an intentional 3DS shortage like what happened with the Wii.
