Minecraft Is Getting A Real-Money Creator Marketplace

The building blocks.

Minecraft will be getting a marketplace for player-made content this spring with an update for mobile and Windows 10 PC.

On the marketplace, approved creators will be able to sell things like maps and texture packs to other players and take home a portion of the profits. Partner creators at launch include Blockworks, a group that makes RPG-style maps, and Eneija Silverleaf, a popular pixel artist who makes skins for the game.

Players on mobile and PC will be able to buy and download the content with Minecraft Coins, which work similarly to currencies in other mobile games. An Xbox Live Silver or Gold account will be required to buy on the marketplace.

The Discovery update for Minecraft is also bringing things like treasure maps and the much-requested ability to change your bed color. It also introduces new Enchantments, including Frostwalking, which lets you walk on water, and Mending, which keeps your sword sharp.

Mojang has also confirmed that if you locate a hidden forest mansion and defeat the monsters within it, you'll receive the "Totem of Undying" that keeps you alive when you should otherwise have perished.

At the end of February, Microsoft, which owns Mojang and Minecraft, announced that the game had sold 121 million copies, with 55 million people playing everything month.

No one plays in minecraft. The object is to meticulously create worlds and then create something else. No one actually plays, and no one actually cares about other people's worlds aside from just seeing them once or twice.

Why Microsoft why. Some of us can't convert our physical money into digital currency. Plus, what if someone copies your stuff and places it up to buy. They'll be making money on something someone else put work into. I can only hope Microsoft has enough brains to not do this.

@thelongtimefan: It's already coming, so I doubt they'll stop it without at least a trial. They also plan to only use approved creators, not just anyone. So there likely won't be any theft of ideas.

It's not too hard these to get digital currency. I mean prepaid debit/credit cards are everywhere. I know some countries have restrictions/don't allow them, and that sucks for those ppl, but it won't be too many.

I would definitely be willing to pay for some good map mods, because vanilla MC leaves a lot to be desired.

One thing is for sure. Many gamers hate paying for stuff. Part of it is rationalization, part of it is piracy and some of it is a generational thing. They especially hate paying for mods. But I really believe mod developers should get paid for their work. Sometimes it is better than the base game and work for years.

It would be nice for them to make some money to do something they like, stay motivated and supply hours of fun to the people who use the mods. I really admire mod developers but that is a lot of work for a bunch of internet dicks who expect everything for free. Hopefully the community embraces this.

@doom299:But don't you think there's a risk involved too? I believe the more people pay for mods, the less mod-like (you get the idea heh) they will become and it'll end up being just like the regular commercial gaming business we already have. If it gets big enough it could even push out the traditional modder to be replaced by a mini-industry of just a bunch of businesses putting out mods.

@chiefwiggum16: Considering Youtube seems to be bending 'content creators' over, eh, maybe they want a new source of income?

Let's just hope it doesn't end up like D3's auction house and steam workshop's paid mods fiascos... While I do wish for games to offer ways for dedicated players to make a few bucks out of their work, I also believe most gamers still aren't ready for that. So many of them always go paranoia mode as soon as they see they could have to pay for other gamers' work. I do know both D3's auction house and Steam workshop paid mode also had other flaws, but people shouldn't have focused on them so they could justify baning players monetization.
