Minecraft dev wants to settle lawsuit with Quake 3

Maybe they should invent a gaming Triathlon. A round of FPS, a round of RTS, and battle on an MMO or a Racing game. To show who the greatest gamers are.

I believe that "Scrolls" is supposed to come out the same day, that being said, Bethesda is worried about (and I personally would too) that someone would get the name mixed up. now before you get all "crazy", hear me out, there are people everyday that discover games , and on the 11th of November wiil be "somebody's" day to discover a game called, "I think it was called Scrolls or something", "oh, there it is" and walk outta the store with a game they didn't intend to buy, I'm just saying it could happen

Well, I give points to Markus Persson for fun and effort. On the other hand, a lawsuit is serious business and Mr. Persson is not doing himself any favors by trivializing it. On the actual issue in contention, I actually side with the dev of Minecraft. Claiming a common word to be trademark protected even though it is only a part of a trademarked name sets a dangerous legal precedence. I haven't lost respect for Bethesda, but I would like to know its reason for filing this suit because it just looks frivolous on the surface. It would be more reasonable if Scrolls were a RPG similar to the Elder Scrolls series; then the situation would be like some third-world company selling motorcycles branded Motovola. But isn't Scrolls a board game with collectible cards or something like that?

I'm sorry, Bethesda, but when did you change the name of the series to "Scrolls"? I was under the impression it was "The Elder Scrolls". I guess it's my fault, really, since I have never said to anyone, "Hey, I'm gonna play some The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion!" Or, "Oh, man! I am so psyched for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim!" I always just said "Oblivion" or "Skyrim". Silly me.

Why does Notch get to choose the game?

What a legend Notch is! This lawsuit has made me lose a lot of respect for Bethesda and they should be thinking of their corporate identity and the damage they are doing to themselves. In my eyes this is the only way they can redeem themselves! I love the Elder Scrolls Series I can't believe they would put the negative light on themselves like this.

@Hobbes444, the law should not grant exclusive rights to the use of an idea, word or collection of words to ANYone. Just because it's the law doesn't mean it's right. Copyright law enforcement is an ENORMOUS waste of taxpayer dollars. Frag away, Notch, show'em you can use the word "Scrolls" too!

If Bethesda accepts, they earn my respect, win or lose.

OMG that is brilliant by Persson. Pure brilliance. To be honest Minecraft bored me quite quickly as there weren't any specific goals for me to achieve. This shows the man is a marketing genius. How can Bethesda turn down his offer without loosing face in the gaming community. The community that fuels Bethesdas profits. A stroke of genius. Oh and for what it's worth Bethesda is retarded. Scrolls and The Elder Scrolls is two distinct separates. That means no one can make a game called Elder either then I guess? These stupid patent charges has to stop already.

Btw, It's NOT Bethseda game developers that are filing the lawsuit, it's a different entity that handles publishing (I forget the exact name), so please don't get upset and the developers of the great series of Elder Scrolls.

i love both companies i think i like tes just a little more then minecraft but im totally on notch side what bethesda is sueing them for is rediculus and challenging them to a deathmatch in quake 3 is just an awesome move from notch if bethesda agrees to it they have my respect back

Bethesda would lose the lawsuit if they still decided to take it to court. Their claim is absurd, yet the developer of Minecraft is willing to settle it in a way that Bethesda could get what it wants. Kudos to Persson.

@Christoffer112 im no fanboy, and i also disagree with this lawsuit...but Jaga_Telesin's (and a lot of other peoples) claims were ridiculous. i just dont see the point in hating either Bethesda or Mojang over this lawsuit, there is no reason to take sides (at-least not to the extreme that some people do).

This is how you know someone is awesome. They take something as heavy as a lawsuit, and fight back by lightheartedly challenging them to a match of Quake. And he was still kind enough to say he'd put a disclaimer in, even if they win. I really hope Bethesda accepts, it would be very good publicity for both of them.

It would be awesome if it was on live for people to watch. This is epic.

As ridiculous as this sounds Bethesda does have an obligation to defend the use of the words "scrolls" because if they don't defend it, then it leaves it open for other companies to start making Elder Scrolls games on the basis that Bethesda did not defend their own trademark which means that it no longer belongs to them and anyone can now make an Elder Scrolls game. Please, please let this become a trend. Screw lawyers, what we need is a world where disputes are solved by Team Deathmatch, RTS battles, and poker games. Also for those of you wondering, Notch has said he will indeed record the match if it goes through.
