Midway Games has today announced the North American release of The Suffering for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The game is rated "M" for Mature and has a retail price of $49.99.

Developed by Surreal Software, The Suffering is set inside a haunted prison that's been overrun by former inmates' undead souls and reanimated corpses. Players assume the role of a mentally unstable prisoner named Torque who transforms into a monster when enraged.

As they progress through nine spooky levels, players will make decisions that will determine which of the game's three endings they get to see. Along the way, they will bear witness to a whole lot of horrific action, just as GameSpot's Ricardo Torres did in his preview.
