Microsoft Says It Didn't Need Halo Infinite To Be A Launch Title For Series X To Succeed

Having Halo Infinite available at launch would have been "tremendous," Microsoft says, but it wasn't meant to be.

Halo Infinite was supposed to headline the launch lineup for the Xbox Series X/S, but Microsoft delayed the game to 2021 due in part to the impact of COVID-19 and working from home. It's a big loss for the console's launch, as it would have marked the first time since the original Halo in 2001 that a Halo title was released day-and-date with new Xbox hardware.

But in a statement to The New York Times, Xbox spokesperson Cindy Walker downplayed the Halo Infinite delay. Walker said Microsoft of course would have wanted to have Halo Infinite ready for the Series X/S launch, but despite the delay, Walker remains confident that there will be enough games available at launch to encourage people to buy in.

Now Playing: What Halo Infinite's Delay Means For Xbox Series X's Launch | Generation Next

"Having Halo at our launch would have been tremendous," but "we are not reliant on massive exclusive titles to drive console adoption," Walker said. "Our players will have thousands of games from four generations of Xbox available to play on launch day."

After the Halo Infinite delay was announced, Xbox boss Phil Spencer revealed that Microsoft considered releasing a portion of Halo Infinite earlier before deciding to push the entire game to a new release date in 2021.

The "thousands" of games that Walker is referring to comes from backwards compatibility support for original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One games. But looking directly at first-party games, Microsoft only has one "new" major game coming, at least so far. The console edition of the strategy game Gears Tactics will be released as a launch title for Xbox Series X/S, and it will also play on the standard Xbox One. An upgraded version of the previously released Gears 5 will also be available on Series X/S on launch day.

Third-party Xbox Series X/S launch titles include Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, Dirt 5, FIFA 21, Fortnite, Marvel's Avengers, NBA 2K21, Watch Dogs Legion, and Tetris Effect: Connected, and these games will also be available for current-gen. Check out GameSpot's full roundup of Xbox Series X/S launch titles here.

The Xbox Series X/S is scheduled to launch on November 10, and pre-orders will begin from September 22. The S model costs $300 USD and the X edition is going for $500 USD, and those prices are intentionally low. Xbox CFO Tim Stuart recently explained that Microsoft went with relatively low prices to help create a large install base more quickly.

My opinion is that it will not hurt the launch Xbox sales as hardcores will buy it anyway day 1 or within the first 2 weeks. With a decent line up games in foreseeable future, the ongoing sales should be way better than Xbox Ones which stuck pretty much after the initial 1-2 million units sold for many months.

But,Halo Infinite could have brought millions of players to subscribe to Gamepass so...MS will miss alot of those subs

@sladakrobot: The next gen Xbox is poised to sell far less than Xbone ever did. How many of the 35 million buyers of Xbone didn't give up and abandon Xbox over the last 3 years of disappointing lackluster, hyped up releases?

Are you aware Xbonex wasn't that much of a seller too, the last 500 quid, "most powerful" console Microsoft put out and stopped making after only 2.5 years when it couldn't even overtake PSVR unit sales lol?

Halo Infinite was the last "excuse" for Xbox fans to need to buy a next gen Xbox at launch.................. and its gone.

@andrewsqual: Maybe some did sold their XOne but then many other ppl kept buying Xbox consoles in the years 2018,19 and 20.

The Xbox One S All digital sold like crazy,XB One X was for those who wanted the best experience(comparable to those who bought a PS4 Pro).

You dont know the salesnumbers, you just guess 35 millions so you have no basis to build your opinion on.

The same with Xbox One X sales, you simply have no numbers to work with.

Now,given the much better Xbox image, great hardware for a good price,no gimmicks like Kinect and no desaster reaction to "always online",there is a very good reason for MS to sell more units than current gen.

Then when i watch YT and hear ppl who preffered the PS4 over Xbox, saying "damn, series S is only 299$...i might get it so i can play all the GP games",it sounds that the Xbox (series S) can be for many Sony fans a secondary console.

You should also know that once a generation is over and next around the corner,a company stopped producing current gen while ago and retailers sell only whats left in their storages.

Series S is an upgrade over Xbox One X and costs only 299$...there is no place for a Xbox One X in future, why producing more of it?

Dunno why you speak of an excuse to buy a Xbox Series X just coz Halo isnt there at launch? You are just assuming that coz you simply dont see other games ppl like.

Series S and X are good to great way to experience Gamepass which comes frequently with newer 3rd party releases and it offers day one all MS exclusives.

If you play alot of games, there is no better value price=offer imo.

Let me speak about the sales of a PS4 game like Uncharted 4...sold around 16 million copies, right? PS4 consoles sold...around 120 millions.

104 millions of PS4 owners doesnt care about the UC series, they had other reasons to buy a PS4.

Sony delaying UC5 would NOT AFFECT the vast majority of PS5 sales at all.

@mogan: Why would they when they can also play it on X1 or PC? This only starts to get interesting in 2 years time, when Forza or Fable might come out.

Of course not but it wouldn’t have hurt.

Gamepass and the low price will be the two main factors for a strong start.

@gamerbum: 500,- is not a low price and not even 10% plan to buy an XBox SS, while 70% plan to buy a PS5.

@kraenk12:
"not even 10% plan to buy an XBox SS, while 70% plan to buy a PS5."
Can you post a link to that survey you took the numbers from?
