Microsoft said no to PlayStation 4 exclusive Rime

"Part of job is living with mistakes," says Microsoft exec Phil Spencer.

Microsoft at one stage turned down a chance to own the title that would end up becoming intriguing PlayStation 4 exclusive Rime, leaked documents have revealed.

VG Leaks published the documents, which showed that Tequila Works asked Microsoft for $3 million to develop an Xbox Live Arcade version of what was then called Echoes of Siren. The title would also come to Windows 8 and Windows Phone, and was described as "Gauntlet meets Minecraft meets Jason and the Argonauts" in its pitch document.

Microsoft studios exec Phil Spencer answered a question on Twitter about why Microsoft declined the option to fund the game. "Part of job is living with mistakes," said Spencer.

"Passed on Guitar Hero...I can list many misses regretfully. I try to focus on what we did ship."

"We'll miss some, nature of the beast," he added, "it's why I don't hate when games ship elsewhere. Cool to see team's idea turn into great game."

Rime is still in development for PlayStation 4. It does not yet have a release date, but captured the imagination of many when it was unveiled at Gamescom 2013.

I respect Phil for his honesty, I think that with the sheer quantity of games being developed and seeking funding it's realistically impossible to gamble on every single one; great honesty to notice he missed something here.

Rime looks like Ico/SotC copy-paste. Not original, but will likely sell. MS is a disgrace - it's obvious that such a game would sell like hotcakes.

Too busy with their non-gaming features to find time for a decent indie

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> You're wrong, It's a point and click adventure game but made in a different way. If you fail, you lose and if you succeed, you win and the choices you make affect the results and the endings so if that's not enough to make it an adventure game then what is?

Heavy Rain was okay but once you beat the game, that's pretty much it.

Given how Microsoft doesn't have much faith in new IPs it's not surprising that they turned Rime down and decided to rehash franchises like Gears of War and Halo instead. Meanwhile Sony seems to have taken on most of the new IPs in gaming. It would have very refreshing to see the Xbox One go down this route.

<< LINK REMOVED >> All companies make mistakes. Right now Sony are doing everything right but history has shown time and time again it won't always be like that. Microsoft right now seem to be doing everything wrong but again fortunes will change eventually. If you want an example. Sony turned down Halo and while that's probably one of the biggest IP mistakes they will ever make it's probably the reason why they don't turn down much anymore. So Microsoft will learn to take more risks eventually.

I'll give you that.. Sony is making a lot of smart choices this time around. And I have a feeling its because they largely in-part worked closely with devs. Unlike ms, figured we can do what we want and still get fans to spend the cash. Not a smart choice, times are changing people are more critical of what they want from their gaming devices, and will make decisions based off it.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Except they paid the exclusivity of "Deadlight" from this very same studio. So this is a weird (and not very good) move.

Great, that's one of the titles I'm most looking forward to... It look more ICO meets Journey IMO, but hey, I'll take it either way.
