Microsoft said no to PlayStation 4 exclusive Rime

"Part of job is living with mistakes," says Microsoft exec Phil Spencer.

Microsoft at one stage turned down a chance to own the title that would end up becoming intriguing PlayStation 4 exclusive Rime, leaked documents have revealed.

VG Leaks published the documents, which showed that Tequila Works asked Microsoft for $3 million to develop an Xbox Live Arcade version of what was then called Echoes of Siren. The title would also come to Windows 8 and Windows Phone, and was described as "Gauntlet meets Minecraft meets Jason and the Argonauts" in its pitch document.

Microsoft studios exec Phil Spencer answered a question on Twitter about why Microsoft declined the option to fund the game. "Part of job is living with mistakes," said Spencer.

"Passed on Guitar Hero...I can list many misses regretfully. I try to focus on what we did ship."

"We'll miss some, nature of the beast," he added, "it's why I don't hate when games ship elsewhere. Cool to see team's idea turn into great game."

Rime is still in development for PlayStation 4. It does not yet have a release date, but captured the imagination of many when it was unveiled at Gamescom 2013.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The 180 wasn't a mistake though. The 16 exclusives shown at the E3 wasn't a mistake either. M$ just needs to keep focusing on exclusive games, lowering the price of the XBox One and having a strong E3 in June.

@blackace @torbonator Hey BlackAce! I haven't seen you defending the Xbone in quite some time around these parts?! Captain Hindsight says, "Maybe they should of just released the Xbox 720p WITHOUT the motion controls!" Hard to believe that Microsoft is still chasing Wii Sports money!!

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The fact they had to do 180 was the fact everything before it was a huge mistake, hence it's called a 180.

After the 180 they redeemed themselves kind of, but they've lost so reputation much to the PS4 it's unreal.

One of the reasons I like Sony is because they embrace titles like these, it doesn't need to be a million seller shooter, they are willing to take risks.

@GamerYnoX Outlast is one of my favorite games EVER! And I never would of played it if it wasn't for the PS+ deal on the PS4. The fact that Sony liked Outlast so much that they wanted me to play this game for free, boggles my mind! That's some sick and twisted shit. I love Sony for this fact and I have the same feeling I have when the 360 came out and all those great games were set to be released. (ie) Mass effect, bioshock, gears of war, Halo 3, Assassins Creed....all new IPs.

I'm quite sure that they showed him something, but their focus was on other things instead of games.

I loved playing Gauntlet in the arcades like 20 years ago. would be interesting to see a good remake. Maybe they have one and I don't know about it?

Shooters and sports. Sports and shooters. And a few lame attempts occasionally otherwise. Once Microsoft gets its head wrapped around something, it runs it into the ground and then claims it's the leading edge. Windows 8, as one example. Absolute commitment to Kinect is another. The one string of about-faces this last summer was the only time Microsoft actually unwrapped its head, out of abject terror.

Microsoft goes for the big guns, clearly. These are the kind of risks they need to take. But to their defense, the description of the game is odd.

@Jdzspace @sirkibble2 Well if I were microsoft and read the description of flappy bird, I certainly wouldn't have funded it, but would never have predicted it's immense profit just from advertising revenue. My point is, goofy and different doesn't always make a good game either. When you get asked for millions to fund games and all you have are funky descriptions to make a decision on, anything can happen. Personally, I thought the description sounded like it could turn out to be a really fun game, and I think microsoft made a big mistake not to fund it, but who knows, instead of seeing this intriguing piece of art, they could have shown us some poorly made acid trip.

I can see why they turned them down. Their description of the game is weird, Gauntlet, Minecraft and Jason of the Argonauts? That's an odd combination and the version of the game they're showing looks nothing like any of those, seems more like Journey meets ICO.

Don't forget that they'd already made a game for Microsoft (Deadlight) which ended up being just OK and didn't really sell that well, so as much as people like to hate on Microsoft this seems like a perfectly reasonable business decision.

Closely watching the development of the Xbox One since they announced it last year I would have to say that with all that has happened, Spencer's statement should be his ENTIRE job is to live with mistakes.

This is why i love Sony, they are willing to take risks with game concepts they have no business greenlighting. You can have your Resistance's, Killzones's and other bro shooters while also enjoying niche and unorthodox gaming experiences like The Puppeter, Journey and Ni No Kuni. Now if only they could stop sending some of their games out to die.

@Celsius765 @edxmon It was more than good man, it was by the same people who later made Shadow of the Colosus.

How did no one play this game? It was on the back of the PS2 box and was a release day title
