Microsoft on loaning and gifting digital Xbox One games -- "We totally believe in that future"

Xbox boss Phil Spencer says Microsoft is now "fully heads down" in working to introduce new marketplace functionality to the Xbox One.

Microsoft is committed to expanding the Xbox One's digital marketplace functionality with new features like loaning and gifting downloaded titles, Xbox boss Phil Spencer told GameSpot in a new interview. Speaking with us from the 2014 Game Developers Conference last week in San Francisco, Spencer made it clear that digital will be a focus going forward.

"We believe in a digital future on our box," Spencer said, making sure to point out that retail is important to the company as well. Spencer says Microsoft can maintain its business with traditional retailers while simultaneously beefing up its own digital initiatives.

"On the digital space, and the things that we've talked about, what that opens up...like we understand what games you own and who you are and how you move around and who you might want to loan rights to your games or gift your games to," Spencer said. "We totally believe in that future. And any other marketplace you play in, these kind of mechanisms are out there."

Indeed, Valve's Steam marketplace currently allows its 65 million users to gift games to friends. The company also recently introduced a Family Sharing program that lets users play one another's games and even earn their own achievements and save progress via the cloud.

"We are now fully heads down on thinking about and building out the future of our digital marketplace to enable what people would expect, and hopefully some things that will delight them beyond their expectations" -- Spencer

Microsoft originally planned to offer its own Family Sharing plan for Xbox One, which would have allowed users to share their titles with up to ten others from any console, but the company ditched this feature after it reversed a number of controversial Xbox One policies in June.

This functionality, and other new features, appear to be ready for a comeback.

"We are now fully heads down on thinking about and building out the future of our digital marketplace to enable what people would expect, and hopefully some things that will delight them beyond their expectations," Spencer said.

Finally, Spencer yet again addressed the controversial few months Microsoft endured following the Xbox One announcement in May and its the policy reversals a month later after E3 last June.

"I know when I say this I always get beat up, but I think some of what we were trying to say last summer was right," Spencer said. That said, Spencer made it clear that Microsoft could have done a better job in communicating the value of its since-reversed digital initiatives.

This isn't the first time Spencer has addressed last summer's Xbox One controversy. Speaking at SXSW this month, Spencer said, "when you're going to say something to a consumer that might put them off, it's better to just be direct and honest, rather than trying to sugar-coat something that might be controversial."

Also in our interview, Spencer talked about Microsoft's competition with Sony's PlayStation 4, saying "We are in this to win."

So why haven't you implemented it yet? What are you waiting for?

Steam already beat you to it.

I sure as hell hope that's not what they were saying considering the damn thing was coming with a CD-ROM no matter what. Pretty sure you could still buy hard copies, it would maybe be harder to get, but you could. Other wise there would be no reason for the ROM.

Loaning stops being loaning and gifting stops being gifting when you're forced to pay a fee for such things.

Wooooooow, so much money *sarcasm* I am quite poor and I can still afford to pay $60 once a year... Not to mention Netflix is another company, when you pay for Netflix you are paying to use it on any device that can run Netflix.

Sorry, but I'm convinced Microsoft are just making this stuff up as they go along now. They're just buying time until they fully reinstate all their crazy policies announced at E3.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Crazy policies? Who said sharing games is crazy? I loved their policies then, and I'm eager to see them return. I want the freedom to lend a game to a friend, to family-share, to have some of the stuff they planned. Only ill-informed people or anti-digital people hated it, but the industry is headed towards digital and I don't know... Nothing stops companies from doing it so I guess it's just going to happen for better or for worse.

Microsoft should just give the option of having your Xbox One always on or not and give benefits to having it on. Make it a toggle to let your Xbox One go to sleep instead of shutting down. If you let your Xbox One go to sleep and always be on you get the on the fly updates, you don't need to keep your disk in the console while playing, and you can't wake up your console via voice with Kinect because Kinect will be shut off too.

If don't want your Xbox to be always online then you don't get the above benefits. A small amount of people keep their Xboxes off line and they'll complain because they want their cake and eat it too but thats tough. Most people won't care, they'll buy the Xbox One, plug it in and just use it and not even worry about the always on. I think its 1% of the people who are complaining about it in the first place. Those same people own Android or iphones phones and don't complain that Google or apple knows more about them than Microsoft will ever know. If someone wants to think that Microsoft is going to watch them through Kinect or listen to their boring conversation they have with their friends while they're playing COD Ghost, let them think that...unless of course they are doing something wrong and don't want to get caught.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Xbox One is already like that. In instant-on mode it's always on, but sleeps and can download updates. Only on power-saver does it actually shut down. That or you regularly unplug it.

Or on first start up you get the option and let people know that if you choose to have the Xbox on Kinect shut down completely that you won't be able to shut down by voice via Kinect, you won't get auto updates and you'll have to keep the disk in the drive when playing.

I bet most people will say they want always on.

They want to control gaming is all it is. They hate the fact that we can sell our games ourselves, loan them to friends, etc. Do we really think Microsoft would give us a fair deal on games if they were all digital? Look at older Microsoft games on Live. All still ridiculously priced. One day I guarantee they are going to reimplement DRM and always online. Just need to fleece their fans as much as possible first.

@Martyr77 really? That's why they planned on sharing those games with 10 ppl? Right now I'm sharing all of my digital games with a friend and play 1 copy at same time wich means we split the cost of each game $30 for game from me but you pay $60 and trade it in for $20-$30 so who ends up paying more? After you trade yours in you don't have the game anymore and I still got mine for same price. And you are stupid ass for saying they gonna implement crap after selling the consoles wich would be illegal but you sony zombies love making up shit. Perhaps take a look at sony burning sticker drm or fact of them spreading spyware and rootkits for personal gain
