Microsoft extending 360 warranty to three years

[UPDATE 2] An apologetic software giant to replace any console suffering "red ring of death" for free worldwide; extension applies to every console sold since launch; company will take $1.05 billion charge.

Today, Microsoft announced that it is once again revamping its warranty scheme for the Xbox 360. After mounting anecdotal evidence of the system's failure rate due to the dreaded "red ring of death" (three flashing red lights on the console's front panel), the publisher is changing its warranty to cover systems affected by the red ring for three years from the date of purchase. Any console that suffers the aforementioned failure in any territory the 360 is sold can be returned to Microsoft for repair for free, because the warranty also includes shipping charges.

"As a result of what Microsoft views as an unacceptable number of repairs to Xbox 360 consoles, the company conducted extensive investigations into potential sources of general hardware failures," the company said in a statement. The three-year extension is for all 360s, and will be retroactively applied to every console bought since the 360 launched. That means anyone who bought a console in November 2005 will be covered until November 2008.

[UPDATE] Peter Moore, Corporate Vice President of the Entertainment and Devices Division of Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business, said he is personally sorry about anyone who's suffered a 360 failure. "We haven't done right by our customers, and for that I apologize," he told GameSpot. "We listened, and we're going to make it right." In an in-depth interview with GameSpot, Moore outlined the new warranty, and emphasized it would be "global" in nature.

Moore also shot down point-blank unconfirmed reports that Forza Motorsport 2 was "bricking" consoles. "It's not a software issue, guys," he assured GameSpot. "It's a variety of hardware issues which we're taking steps to rectify." Though he declined to name any issue specifically, Moore said that Microsoft has improved the 360 hardware to help ensure that future batches of 360 hardware will not suffer similar issues.

Customers who have already paid for repairs that would be covered by the new policy will be reimbursed automatically, according to Microsoft. As a result of this new warranty extension, the publisher said it will report a $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion charge to its earnings for the quarter ended June 30, 2007.

From its November 2005 launch onward, Microsoft's Xbox 360 has been plagued by reports of malfunctioning consoles. While the company downplayed reports of faulty hardware for the better part of a year after launch, last September it acknowledged that its original batch of systems was failing at an unusually high rate. Microsoft extended the standard 90-day warranty to a full year, and promised to reimburse all those customers who had already been made to pay for repairs.

In April, the company once again tweaked its warranty service, saying it would no longer charge shipping on repaired Xbox 360 consoles, and would extend the warranty on those repairs.

The new warranty extension arrives atop a growing tide of reports of 360 hardware problems, including a Monday DailyTech.com report quoting retailers as saying up to 33 percent of launch units fail. To help clarify the question of 360 hardware reliability, GameSpot conducted a week-long informal poll of its users, asking simply, "Has your Xbox 360 failed?"

Of the 49,934 respondents who said they owned a 360, 27,579 (55.2 percent) claimed to have had no problems at all. However, a startling 22,355 respondents--44.7 percent--claimed to have had at least one 360 fail. Some 13,858 respondents (27.8 percent) said they had one console die: of those, 10,012 (20.0 percent) said their console was replaced for free and 3,846 (7.7 percent) attested they had to pay. Others were even less lucky, with 3,619 (7.2 percent) saying they had suffered two dead 360s, and 4,878 (9.7 percent) reporting over two instances of hardware failure. (The initial percentages were slightly inaccurate--GameSpot regrets the error.)

The poll results are not definitive, and given the open nature of the poll's voting, its results could be manipulated. However, there is a wealth of anecdotal evidence pointing to a high 360 failure rate. Inside the GameSpot offices, 23 editors own 26 360s bought between November 2005 and January 2007. Eight have had their consoles fail completely at least once; of those, two editors suffering complete 360 failures on two occasions. Two others are experiencing ongoing problems, including USB port failure and intermittent cases of the "red ring." The remaining editors have encountered no hardware defects.

All the failures I've had are either because of my Intercooler fan which sometimes works, but sometimes screws up, or because of my dusty room. At least Microsoft is taking responsibility.

While I don't like MS I have to commend them for offering a three year warranty on the product for this specific problem. This is awesome, fess up and move on while rectifying the problem. While this is nice PR, this is also great for those that did get a messed up system. There was a poll done a while back saying that if a customer is treated well, then they'll continue to buy that company's product again. I hope more companies do this.

I have had my console since day one and have yet to have any kind of hardware issues. I dont understand how there can possibly be that many people having issues with their systems. I find it hard to believe that somehow my unit has been immune to all these so called hardware failures. I believe there are just a very vocal few that dont know how to take care of their stuff.

By the way I will give gamespot credit for actually posting some unbiased news. Even if they are WAY LATER in doing so (other game sites have been featuring reports about this issue since 360's launch).

About time they nip this in the butt!! I personally haven't had any major problems with my 360 being a owner from almost day one, but I know of numerous people who have had various problems. Its a shame no doubt, but machines are known for funky problems, having a company willing to aid the consumer is something most will never get, so much praise to Microsoft. Besides, with the money they are about to make in the coming months off of game sales and Xbox Live what not, I think this is a really smart move on their part. You do have to spend a little money to make some money, funny how that works...

The chances of you getting a new XBOX 360 today that will fail are probably less than 1%. The most recently produced systems no doubt have all of the kinks worked out(Obviously). It's probably the earlier systems that are failing, which is who this warranty is meant to cover. Even so, new buyers still get covered for three years anyway. Score! There's no reason not to buy one, no reports indicate that newly produced systems are failing. This is great move by Microsoft.

They shouldn't be faulty to begin with, thats Microsoft for you rushing to release the flop box for fear of Sony beating them to it, after 3 years when the extended warranty runs out they will probably break down but i supose by 3 years time they will have released another console or two anyway.

"ChaosLives68 That is amazing...Three years for a console warranty is great. P.S. my launch system is still running perfect..Cross my fingers." The people I really feel for are the first gen adoptors, many of whom have just a little over a year left with this new warranty. It sucks to own something that makes you worry it might just outlive the warranty...

At least they're trying to do something about it. And finally someone recognized that there is a problem with the hardware. I still think a class action lawsuit is what Microsoft really needs.

I am glad that is can finally be put to rest. I was very relucntant to speak on the matter due to some innorancce from certain types of people, however, owning all 3 systems, I am now on my 3rd 360. My launch system died (red ring) 13 months after purchase. I returned it to best buy in jan of this year and 4 days later the replacement died (disc read error) as well. I did not reup my warrenty at best buy so I sent it to MS who had the nox shipped to me in 2 days and I got my 360 back (same one) 6 days later. I recently traded in that system (had no problems) for the elite and have been pretty content. Now everyone who has had they system fail due to red ring issues will either get it repaired for free and for those who paied they will get a refund. Now people can finally lay this whole issue to rest as the newer systems seem to not be affected. Besides being a bit annoyed, I only went 1 week without the system and had stellar customer service.

Maybe Peter Moore's new Tattoo this e3 will be the Red Ring of Death on his forearm. Or maybe Microsoft will stop rushing out there stuff like Vista and forcing everyoen to buy junk and things could get done first just like the old days. Nah who am i kidding. My walkman from 1993 and my Nes from 1991 still work fine. My iPod is dead and my 360 is afraid to be played more then 10 minutes.

I commend Microsoft for admitting that they have a defective product and willing to pay for it. However, at the same time, this admittance would forever label the xbox360 as a poorly made product in terms of build quality and workmanship and make potential customers wary of buying the system. I for once do not want a refurbished product(which most companies do to 'repair' your appliance) after just plunking down almost half-a-grand for a system.

IF MS never did the world wide release of the 360 it might not have so many dying 360.. Alot of the machines were rushed to meet the deadline and that where the problem happen. Next time focus on want country.

dsardina- Thankyou for the insult. I wish you had an arguement that I could take on, but I guess I just fail, eh? Look, nowhere in my post did I say anything against the 360, other than to say this 3 year warranty is nothing more than a patch, not "fixing" the problem. I would like to buy a 360. Problem for Microsoft is, that I've owned more than a handful of their products, and I have zero faith in their manufacturing. If they were to fix this issue, and finally make something that isn't so risky, they'd likely sell me a 360. I like the games on their platform, I just don't trust shoddy manufacturing, something Microsoft have suffered from for a while. So please, if you have a problem with something I post, debate me. Don't sling insults.

SOLD!" -LOL... I really couldn't have summed it up better myself... How is any of this a good thing unless you have a broken 360 (apparently alot do)

Microsoft could have been a jerk and not refunded people that paid to get their XBOX 360's fixed. I can't believe they are going to refund everyone who paid. More game money for all the games that are coming out this year!

CRAP! I got mine at launch day and then it broke about a year and a half later, and I had to pay 168 bucks Canadian for it to be replaced. That's just plain ridicorus. Good news for new 360 owners though.

"petejams If Sony had a systematic general hardware fault, sure they should have done it. They didn't and they don't currently so your argument is moot. MS is only offering extended warranty for one specific problem which is a general hardware fault impacting many. I still have 2 old style PS2's that work perfectly and you didn't hear about faults with Sony like you have with 360s. Make apples to apples comparisons not hog wild ones. " last time i checked sony lost a class action law suit because of the ps2, and i have two broken ps2s.

"Making it right" would imply to me that the systems will no longer die at obscene rates. I don't think it's a strong selling point that they're so worried about their product, they've extended the warranty. I mean, it's great for people who own the system, but telling me that if I buy your system you believe the odds are so great that it will bust that you've made this new warranty doesn't make me want to buy your system. "So you're saying, if I buy your product which has been known to break, brick, or scratch games, all I have to do is send it back to you and WAIT for you to send me another system with the same inherant problems?
