Microsoft extending 360 warranty to three years

[UPDATE 2] An apologetic software giant to replace any console suffering "red ring of death" for free worldwide; extension applies to every console sold since launch; company will take $1.05 billion charge.

Today, Microsoft announced that it is once again revamping its warranty scheme for the Xbox 360. After mounting anecdotal evidence of the system's failure rate due to the dreaded "red ring of death" (three flashing red lights on the console's front panel), the publisher is changing its warranty to cover systems affected by the red ring for three years from the date of purchase. Any console that suffers the aforementioned failure in any territory the 360 is sold can be returned to Microsoft for repair for free, because the warranty also includes shipping charges.

"As a result of what Microsoft views as an unacceptable number of repairs to Xbox 360 consoles, the company conducted extensive investigations into potential sources of general hardware failures," the company said in a statement. The three-year extension is for all 360s, and will be retroactively applied to every console bought since the 360 launched. That means anyone who bought a console in November 2005 will be covered until November 2008.

[UPDATE] Peter Moore, Corporate Vice President of the Entertainment and Devices Division of Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business, said he is personally sorry about anyone who's suffered a 360 failure. "We haven't done right by our customers, and for that I apologize," he told GameSpot. "We listened, and we're going to make it right." In an in-depth interview with GameSpot, Moore outlined the new warranty, and emphasized it would be "global" in nature.

Moore also shot down point-blank unconfirmed reports that Forza Motorsport 2 was "bricking" consoles. "It's not a software issue, guys," he assured GameSpot. "It's a variety of hardware issues which we're taking steps to rectify." Though he declined to name any issue specifically, Moore said that Microsoft has improved the 360 hardware to help ensure that future batches of 360 hardware will not suffer similar issues.

Customers who have already paid for repairs that would be covered by the new policy will be reimbursed automatically, according to Microsoft. As a result of this new warranty extension, the publisher said it will report a $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion charge to its earnings for the quarter ended June 30, 2007.

From its November 2005 launch onward, Microsoft's Xbox 360 has been plagued by reports of malfunctioning consoles. While the company downplayed reports of faulty hardware for the better part of a year after launch, last September it acknowledged that its original batch of systems was failing at an unusually high rate. Microsoft extended the standard 90-day warranty to a full year, and promised to reimburse all those customers who had already been made to pay for repairs.

In April, the company once again tweaked its warranty service, saying it would no longer charge shipping on repaired Xbox 360 consoles, and would extend the warranty on those repairs.

The new warranty extension arrives atop a growing tide of reports of 360 hardware problems, including a Monday DailyTech.com report quoting retailers as saying up to 33 percent of launch units fail. To help clarify the question of 360 hardware reliability, GameSpot conducted a week-long informal poll of its users, asking simply, "Has your Xbox 360 failed?"

Of the 49,934 respondents who said they owned a 360, 27,579 (55.2 percent) claimed to have had no problems at all. However, a startling 22,355 respondents--44.7 percent--claimed to have had at least one 360 fail. Some 13,858 respondents (27.8 percent) said they had one console die: of those, 10,012 (20.0 percent) said their console was replaced for free and 3,846 (7.7 percent) attested they had to pay. Others were even less lucky, with 3,619 (7.2 percent) saying they had suffered two dead 360s, and 4,878 (9.7 percent) reporting over two instances of hardware failure. (The initial percentages were slightly inaccurate--GameSpot regrets the error.)

The poll results are not definitive, and given the open nature of the poll's voting, its results could be manipulated. However, there is a wealth of anecdotal evidence pointing to a high 360 failure rate. Inside the GameSpot offices, 23 editors own 26 360s bought between November 2005 and January 2007. Eight have had their consoles fail completely at least once; of those, two editors suffering complete 360 failures on two occasions. Two others are experiencing ongoing problems, including USB port failure and intermittent cases of the "red ring." The remaining editors have encountered no hardware defects.

They shouldn't have ignored it so long, but this is nice to see. Also, the reason Sony has no extended warranty is because PS3's aren't breaking down for no reason. You need to keep it in a 90 degree room with no ventilation while running for two weeks without a cooler for it to die. I hope it doesn't take a couple years for Microsoft to fix up vista. Also, neither me or any of my friends have ever had serious console problems (except a Gamecube but who cares). I know a system can break while ventilted and not abused, but is really lowers the chances

The warranty isn't 3 years now on 360's people.. Microsoft is only covering the defectively made consoles for up to three years because there engineering is faulty. Causing failures, sometimes more than once. i should know, i have had tons of 360 problems

I've only had my 360 since February, but hearing about how many people have had problems worries me. Nice to know MS is stepping up and extending that warranty for three years now. Maybe I won't have to worry about my 360 so much anymore.

Sony got sued over PS2's technical problem, and they decided to settle the suit. It's on Wikipedia, look it up. Funny thing is that, I suppose if Xbox 360 would just stop working like other consoles without giving any sort of indications/feedbacks, people might not even notice. All my consoles freeze/crash from time to time, my 360 is not an exception but nor is it worse than the other consoles that i owned.

taken from the CNN website a minute ago, Not made up fanboy hate..... "Anecdotal evidence suggests the Xbox 360 failure rate may be as high as one in every three machines..." "The real number [of Xbox 360 failure rates] is between 30 to 33 percent," said one former EB Games employee. An anonymous Best Buy employee said the failure rate for the console was "between a quarter to a third" of all units sold. A different yet current EB Games employee told GamePro the failure rate was 1 in 4 at their store. less than 1% vs 33% i smell MS propaganda mill running at full capacity. Why lie ms?

Good points, flex49, but yeah things ARE breaking. Suggested 30%? It will continue to decrease over time from here on out: AGAIN, just to remind people - there ARE being changes made to the 360s to prevent this issue. It is only my hope now that by the time the 3 yr warranty status ends that a high percentage of these cases have been permanantly fixed. As of now (based on results of the changes), things are looking up to such, but only time will tell.

@ JohnWinger "Microsoft is finally admiting the 360 is poorly designed. its about time. On my 5th console and they finally admit it." and you probably have made the same mistakes each time they send you one....probably have the power brick on a rug covered up while you move your 360 while a game is playing...real smart!

morpheusxp I find it hard to believe that somehow my unit has been immune to all these so called hardware failures. I believe there are just a very vocal few that dont know how to take care of their stuff. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No, some people's 360s have died within DAYS of purchase; do you really think these people have treated their new, expensive product so badly this would happen without there already being a fault in the hardware? Do you also think Microsoft would offer a 3 year warranty to every 360 owner if the problem was people not treating it properly? Seriously? Do you actually think that?

Japanesegoth can say it easily and so can I. I've had the same 360 since April 2006 and I play it everyday. The whole thing is soooo overblown but I'm not denying there is a problem....we all know there are real problems with the 360. Just think... If 1 out of every hundred owners has a 360 RROD problem, that would make 110,000 gamers complaining (not including the lying 360 haters) in the forums which would give the impression that it's everyone. But the fact is that the PS2 had its breakdown problems also and I don't remember Sony implementing a 3 year warranty....good job, MS! But I believe this warranty annoucement is just media damage control. To reiterate my point...if it was really 30-33% of 360's breaking down (NOT!), do you think cheap ass MS would have implemented a 3 year warranty? That'd be an enormous amount of repair costs (3.5 million broken 360s) for them to absorb

God microsofts customer service is absolutely horrible, why would it matter if they extended the warranty i'm having to deal with the service right now and let me tell you it is the worst customer service i have ever had to deal with. they would'nt tell my son the information on a refund today about the refund on the new warranty because he is 12 he did it all himself setup the service and he got them to send him a box it took 3 phone calls and many days and now they will not tell him if he will get a refund or not!!!!!!!! absolutely horrible.

@ dryden555, I think most higher end comsumer electronics devices like computers and their ilk that cost 500 + have extended warranty periods like 2 -3 years. While cheap 200 and bellow might come with a year. If you paid 400 dollars for something you should have some guarantee that it's not going to die. MS should have had this from the very beginning. Same for Sony.

I read that the only reasons why 360s are breaking down is because the new updates brick modded systems and people don't take good care of them. I bought mine in march of 06 and im still running good,...(knock on wood).

EDIT: "We will also retroactively reimburse any of you who paid for repairs related to problems indicated by this error message in the past." So I hope that answers my questions.. we'll find out.

SonyPSP It would be idiotic for a corporation to not research and work out any problems that could potentially arise, when there have been reports of hardware failure. Especially if you're offering a three year warranty on brand new systems. Common sense will tell you that Microsoft would full proof their newest systems. How long has Microsoft been in business? They tend to be sloppy on releases, but they are quite adept at working out problems once they're discovered.

Woot finally. And for the Sony fanboys who are constantly saying oh this doesnt change anything it still breaks- YOUR WRONG. Recently MS has made numerous internal changes to the 360 in both new systems and refurbished, namely the new heatsink/clamp that practically eliminates the entire issue. In addition, the new 360s are now being shipped out with the smaller 65nm chips (I believe this was just confirmed very recently?) which use less power, are cheaper, and MOST IMPORTANTLY: Generate less heat (The base for most of 360s problems) So please dont make ridiculous posts without knowing what you are talking about... :-/ On the OTHER hand, I think that this should have been taken care of a lot sooner. At least they're doing SOMETHING (Unlike Sony's PS2 issues...)

I have a launch 360 and never had an issue with it, but I have to say this is a great move by microsoft. Smart very smart. The red ring of death is the only complaint i've ever heard any of have about the 360, so it's pretty much moot now.

Just the other day i put in jet set radio future and got 1 red ring, scared me to death. Lucky me it wasn't the 3 rings. Though i'm now glad that microsoft extended their warrenty. Sucks mine only lasts till november of '08 though. I still really doubt they'll refund everybody whos sent in their 360 though.
