Microsoft clarifies Xbox One used game stance

Xbox maker acknowledges "confusion" exists around secondhand games for next-gen platform, doesn't deny fee will be required to play secondhand titles.

Microsoft has clarified its stance on used games as it relates to the Xbox One, the company's next-generation platform.

No Caption Provided

Writing on his blog, Microsoft director of Xbox Live programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb acknowledged that some "confusion" over used games on the next-gen platform has arisen today.

"We know there is some confusion around used games on Xbox One and wanted to provide a bit of clarification on exactly what we've confirmed today," Hryb said. "While there have been many potential scenarios discussed, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail."

"Beyond that, we have not confirmed any specific scenarios."

Earlier today, a Wired report claimed the Xbox One would require secondhand users pay a fee to play used games. Hryb did not deny this in his statement today, saying only that there will be no fee for those who play their games at a friend's house, provided they sign in to their profile.

"Another piece of clarification around playing games at a friend's house--should you choose to play your game at your friend's house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile," he said.

@izeage I'm not hating, I'm just stating the facts of this generation. Also no, I won't be buying a Xbox One, with everything that Microsoft has detailed after the show I don't fancy the console anymore. That's saying a lot, during the conference I was pumped, I loved the the snap features it had, the entertainment value alone for the console had my panties in a fit of happiness. It was truly impressive, just as Sony's console is genuinely impressive for gamers, this is the console is for those entertainment buffs that love all the multimedia sort of things like I do. But as it stands, I'm a gamer first and what Microsoft has detailed shows we're not their focus.

@izeage You can't compare Trophies and PSN to blocking second hand games at a price. That's like saying my ice cream shop was successful by copying a flavor from another shop, but they just started putting dirt in their ice cream so we should too.

Microsofts software sales will show a decline if they go through with this, no matter how successful the Xbox One sell it'll end like the Wii did with very poor software sales.

Also, preaching to the choir, I know how resales help grow the market and that's what I'm arguing about here, but this announcement has shown that they aren't too concerned with that if they've enabled a form of block on the resale market no matter how big or small it will add a layer of inconvenience to the market and will hurt Microsoft.

@izeage There is no way hell that Sony will follow a "market trend" that blocks used games after the hell storm that followed the Xbox One reveal. They're a business to make money, but even they aren't that stupid. Besides, hasn't Sony already confirmed that it's the developers choice to block whatever they want from game features to what you can stream?

GameStop is of no concern to Microsoft, I don't see why they'd care if Gamestop went under. They're by far the biggest retailer in games and than some, but they're also they biggest money sink in Microsofts wallet.

@izeage It came as a surprise to him, meaning he had no clue that the announcement of blocking second hand games would happen. You just proved my point by posting this, he's only confident because Microsoft claims they have a system that they will reveal later on that'll support used game sales. For all we know that means Gamestop can sell a used copy of a $60 game for $40 and than you pay Microsoft $20 to activate it. or it could be as simple as deactivating the game from your account before trading it, but with this system Gamestop would need to test to make sure every game is deactivated and tradable without severely slowing down Gamestops transactions by forcing them to perhaps test install every game they are offered for trade in. Either way it's a complete hassle and will hurt Microsoft.

@izeage There's a huge difference between being unclear and outright telling the public, yes, you have to pay a fee to play second hand games.

I know what the CEO of Gamestop said, but that doesn't change the fact that they've already said we have little control over our own paid in full with our hard earned money games. Besides, until I hear directly from Gamestop about the recent news about basically block second hand games for a price, than there's nothing to argue since Microsoft is far more relevant right now than a nearly two month old interview.

@Whitescarver @izeage As much as I like the multimedia features; I already have an HTPC that I put a lot of effort into getting it to run the way it does (very seamless, my grandma can use it), if this can tie into that system, then sold, but I know it can't because it won't play drm free content (I'm almost positive this is the case, because the 360 can't either) or content that it didn't actually record. My tv shows are captured legally, my movies as well, but integrating a new method of doing something won't fly in my house, no one wants to re-learn it.

As for used games. It sounds like there won' be such a thing anymore. You borrow it, you will probably be paying full price to play it...

@izeage Has nothing to do with the show of games, there are a ton of third parties coming out for both PS4 and Xbox One, than there are the first parties which was the subject of this post. Used games, while not the only unattractive announcement they made after the show, is a huge part of the console games industry, heck, easily well over half of software sales are a direct result of Gamestop buying used games to allow the customer to purchase of more expensive accessories and games. Gamestop has the stock to prove this, except for a small group of diehards, everyone trades games in for better products.

Again, amazing console, not a games console. Don't bring the OS into this conversation, it has nothing to do with why they're not gamer focused, they focused on making a console that does everything and play games, we're part of a bigger picture and not the center piece anymore.

@kazama99 they don't want people getting into the used game area because they loss money don't you kids get that yet. This is a company that is about makeing money not makeing games for you to enjoy for cheap or free. Money first kid and they only make that off new sales not used or rentals.

@hackerrei @kazama99 They shouldn't make money off of used sales. No other consumer market does. They just think they are special and mistakenly think that just because they can block used or borrowed games they actually have justification for doing so. It boggles my mind when consumers defend this sort of exploitative practices when it has no benefit for them to do so.

@TheAgingGamer @kazama99 From what I understand Steam is implementing a system to allow users to sell their games to other users. What I believe they will do to battle this is make new game prices so low, that selling a game isn't really appealing. Honestly, if the video game market lowered their prices, I'm willing to bet this wouldn't be as big of an issue. Or if they allowed game returns again, especially when a title truly sucks (two worlds, I'm talking to you).

@kazama99 @TheAgingGamer Exactly..corporate greed plain and simple. The EU requires software companies to allow the transfer of software licenses, which is even impacting digital second-hand sales through Steam. If game companies continue to thrust these practices on us I hope there will be a large enough movement to get similar protections here in the US. In the meantime, I will continue to purchase physical copies of software for platforms that do not block used games, rather than making digital purchases through things like Games on Demand for the 360, etc.

@TheAgingGamer @kazama99 Well I won't support this at all. So I will not buy systems and publishers that endorse this. This is destroying the gaming console world. I have been a gamer for over 25 years and remember the original nintendo system as a child being awesome. There isn't any reason why they should start attacking used game sales now other than greed using new age tech. The companies like Nintendo and even Sony's first Playstation did not "die" from used game sales.

@kazama99 Right..and even if you do handle it perfectly, they sometimes receive small scratches just being used in the console. Bottom line, there are two things that need to happen: consumers need to continue to fight back for their right to resell their property and the game industry needs to stop trying to stop it and instead focus on releasing products that people will want to keep.

@TheAgingGamer @deathblow3 @kazama99 @hackerrei There is many people arguing about this. I agree with you TheAgingGamer about used games. I was just point out that Used games are also lower in price because there is wear on the disc that makes its value diminish. A disc has to be handled almost perfectly to be without some wear over time. Not going to happen with the coomon folk

@deathblow3 @kazama99 @hackerrei @TheAgingGamer The natural wearing out of a product is not justification for removing the used market, and even if it was, optical discs wear out over time just like the cartridges of old. If taken care of properly, a used vehicle can last for decades just like a used video game. Also, the games market lives on only because of the creation of new games..I'm not sure what you're getting at. It's not like the game companies only sell the same game for years. They create new IPs, sequels to existing IPs, etc. Your argument doesn't really hold up. I realize that the game companies don't make money off of used sales, but it's time for them to stop bitching about it and just embrace the fact that if they want to be part of this market they're going to have to make compromises in order to keep their customers happy.

@kazama99 @hackerrei @TheAgingGamer sony sure as hell does but they dont want to shoot themselves in the foot with stupidity. and as far as cars go its a big difference as car get worse with age so there is always a new car market that doesnt happen with video games they dont change. also the turn around on used cars is 3 to 5 years way after the auto maker has moved on to something new. cars also combat used sales with warrenties.

@hackerrei @TheAgingGamer @kazama99 I know what the license agreement says, but I would argue that you have, like the software companies using it as their crutch, misinterpreted its meaning. Just as you said, you do not own the content on the disc, but what that means is that you have no right to take the content from the disc and redistribute it. However, I would argue that as you do own the physical disc, you should be allowed to do with it whatever you please; destroy it, sell it, turn it into a coaster, etc. The problem is with the legislation regarding the rights of consumers where software is concerned. Just imagine how outraged consumers would be if when they purchased their car they had to sign something that says "You do not own this vehicle, you are paying for the right to drive it. You may not transfer ownership of this vehicle and if the car detects any unauthorized drivers it will disable itself and require the driver to pay to have the car work again." Yeah..sounds ridiculous doesn't it? Well so is their stance on used games.

@hackerrei @TheAgingGamer @kazama99 LOL this isn't some new craze thats sweeping the nation within the last few years people. Used games and all that has been around for as long as consoles have been around. So before we start acting like used games are so horrible and all that, remember this is old news. So then why didn't they stop used games back then.

@TheAgingGamer @hackerrei @kazama99 If you read the books that comes with your games you are not buying the game it's self but the right to play the content other then that you have no rights to copy/change/ or redistribute the content on the disk but the disk it's self is yours so it would be fare to the company that made the content if they get a little of the money from it resale. Think napster and the music industry how they got sued for giving out some one else's content.

read this CAREFULLY!!

"Another piece of clarification around playing games at a friend's house--should you choose to play your game at your friend's house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile," he said.

that was pretty clear, games are tied to your account. to access those games on another account there will be a fee involved - even if the other system is in the same house.

@grbolivar@kazama99@kyuubi_clonesteam doesn't reward you. valve is not paying out of their pocket. publishers have sales not steam. its a business decision that they think will make them more money in the end. not a reward. what do you get a tf2 hat when you pre order. amazing! pre order a digital download now thats funny.

steam sucks its bloated trash. i go out of my way to not buy games on steam. i wish i could buy games straight from the dev's so they got all my money.

@Thisisstupid I don't think they hate gamers. After all, people are stupid enough to allow them to lock parts of the game so that they can pay to unlock it later. They're also willing to put up with paying to access XBL then paying again to access the multiplayer portion on top of paying their ISP for internet service in general. In fact, they love gamers because they don't know how to stop buying stupid, restrictive shit to make them stop. The only way to get the point across to these greedy companies is to stop buying their shit. Emphasis on "shit".

@Rusmurf Thank you!! It was only a matter of time that MS did this, since gamers let them get away with charging them to use an internet connection they already paid for. Now they're charging you to lend out your own property.

The best thing Microsoft did with the 360 was removing this Major Nelson jackass and his stupid videos from the dashboard. He didn't even clarify anything here. He literally confirms that the game is tied by DRM to your account and that other "potential scenarios" have been discussed. That means nothing.
