With the scripts finally complete, Avatar fans can rejoice in knowing that sequels to the film are still in development. Avatar 2 is currently filming, but ahead of full casting announcements, it's being reported that Michelle Yeoh (Crazy Rich Asians, Star Trek: Discovery) has been cast to star in James Cameron's sci-fi epic.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Yeoh will play a scientist named Dr. Karina Mogue in both Avatar 2 and 3. Gaining popularity in the 2000s off the back of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Memoires of a Geisha, Yoeh has had an illustrious film career, and Cameron agrees. "Throughout her career, Michelle has always created unique and memorable characters. I look forward to working with Michelle to do the same thing on the Avatar sequels," he said in a statement.

Yeoh will star alongside Sam Worthington (Everest, Hacksaw Ridge) and Zoe Saldana (Avengers: Infinity War, Guardians of the Galaxy), who will reprise their roles from the 2009 original. Avatar 2 will also star Carol Christine Hilaria Pounder (Avatar, The Shield) Cliff Curtis (The Last Airbender, The Meg), Edie Falco (Every Act of Life, Viper Club), Giovanni Ribisi (Avatar, Selma), Joel David Moore (Avatar, The Guest), and Matt Gerald (Avatar, Bright). Additionally, Kate Winslet, who starred in Cameron's epic 1997 romance drama Titanic, will play a role in Avatar 2.

Hot off the heels of Star Trek: Discovery, Yeoh recently starred in Yuen Woo-ping's martial arts action film Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy. She will also star in Joe Carnahan's upcoming sci-fi action film Boss Level--along with Mel Gibson and Naomi Watts--which is currently in post-production with a 2019 release window. As THR states, Yeoh will return to the role of Captain Philippa Georgiou in her own Star Trek: Discovery spinoff.

Avatar 2 is set to hit theatres on December 18, 2020, with Avatar 3 coming a year later, on December 17, 2021. Avatar 4 and 5 are currently scheduled for December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025 respectively.
