The current shipment figure may actually be higher, as Konami is only counting copies shipped through the end of its reporting period on September 30. In addition, Konami did not say how many of those shipped copies were converted to actual sales.
By comparison, 2014's Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes has shipped more than 1 million copies, bringing the two-game total to at least 6 million.
The Phantom Pain received glowing praise upon release, including a 10/10 score from GameSpot. It also represents something of a turning point for Konami, as series creator Hideo Kojima is rumored to have exited the company on October 8. However, Konami claims the veteran game designer is only on vacation.
For the six-month period ended September 30, Konami's revenue and profit rose. This success was driven in part by favorable results for The Phantom Pain and Pro Evolution Soccer 2016.
