Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain Microtransaction Pricing Revealed [Update]

Micropayments range from $1.65 to $80 for Mother Base Coins.

[Update: It has since emerged that the prices listed below are in New Zealand dollars. New details on Metal Gear Solid 5's microtransactions system can be found through the link.]

Ahead of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain launch, we've now learned more about the stealth-action game's microtransactions. Specifically, a new image posted on Metal Gear Network reveals pricing details for Mother Base Coins, which you can use for the game's Forward Operating Base online mode.

Forward Operating Base is a secondary base where you can go head-to-head with other players; this is not to be confused with Metal Gear Online, the game's other mode that is coming in October. You can use the Mother Base Coins to speed up gameplay. For example, as you get to higher levels, new platforms on your base can take an hour or so to generate. But using the coins lets you accelerate that process.

It doesn't make much difference with the option, it is best without that option anyway.

@AQWBlaZer91: that's a nice notion, but wait until you get invaded by that jerk that spent tons of money to build a base fast and they easily out muscle you bc they paid to unlock everything fast instead of working for it. This is so stupid and goes to show how making games accessible via this method waters down the experience overall.

@H80sReject: Yea it could be a double whammy, you get attacked by someone with insane;ly advanced forces due to real world money... then they steal everything you've got in your FOB from playing legitimately, and you're left with nothing but more timers and game breaking MP match-ups... sweet!

no point getting worked up over this... if you want to spend the money, you will, or can... and if you don't want to spend your money on this, you don't have to..

this is not pay to win, or even pay to play.... this is pay to save time...

these are no different than time savers packs in racing games and such...

you are at no point forced to purchase any DLC to complete the core game.. settle down folks.

I'll drop maybe $10-$20 every other month on GTAV Online cause I enjoy buying the nice cars and customizing them to their max... I'm not going to complain... its my money... they aren't asking for it, they are saying i can use it if I don't want to grind...

and grinding sucks arse

@nerdgazumgaming: Saving time? You know that developers make it intentionally so that everything takes forever so you're either forced to sit through it and grind it out or spend money? There would be no need to be saving time if there were no microtransactions involved.

You're basically only paying for the devs to make everything a grind so that you can then overcome those barriers with your money. All you do is contribute to this messed up behavior so devs keep doing it, which leads to you having to spend more and more money in games in the future. Good job on shooting yourself in the knees.

@nerdgazumgaming: Have you played MG Peacewalker? Bc if you have you'd know that building your base gives you access to better gear and weapons similar to what's being planned for Phantom Pain. If you're paying money to access that stuff faster than clearly you have a great advantage over someone that didn't pay, clearly making this pay to win. Konami sucks now, can't wait to see how it fares now that Hideo Kojima (clearly the genius here) is no longer making games for them.

@H80sReject: From what I have read on the net Konami are no longer going to be making video games and are going back to making Pachinko machines full time.

@H80sReject: for what ii undertand this is for FOB not mother base , I still hate these micro transaction , but i can live with them (ignoring it) because its suposedly only for your second base ( the one for MP ) your main base AKA mother base should not have this i think

@H80sReject: This is a secondary base called Forward Operating Base, not Mother Base.. This is not inside the game world.. This is an online feature outside of the core game that allows users to build a FOB and hack into others... Not the main Mother Base you use for the game.

@nerdgazumgaming: "It's not pay to win.... even though I buy monthly DLC to MAX OUT cars, it's not pay to win." That's some logic you have there. You pay in order to max something out without the work, that's the definition of pay to win and MGS is doing just that.

@30somethingamer: I'm buying cars and customizing them.. they go into my garage.. collect digital dust.. and when i jump on with friends, we mess around with the cars and blow shit up... the fun is the winning... i don't compete with the cars... playing against randoms doesn't tickle my fancy..

@nerdgazumgaming: if the extra bases of the fob are with those coins then its pay to win in that mode.. the more you pay the more bases you have then harder it is for the opponent to reach the goal.

@Ombus: Just cause you have money, does not make you a better gamer.. I have seen tons of paid DLC that can enhance you game experience, which in theory make you better *COD, Warfare, blacklight".... and anyone with a entry level gun can trench these kids if you are a better player..

@Ombus: This is the truth. Nobody should buy this shit everyone grind their FOB's. IT would be a great slap in the face to Konami. It would be great to treat them the same way they treated the great Hideo Kojima.
