Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain Microtransaction Pricing Revealed [Update]

Micropayments range from $1.65 to $80 for Mother Base Coins.

[Update: It has since emerged that the prices listed below are in New Zealand dollars. New details on Metal Gear Solid 5's microtransactions system can be found through the link.]

Ahead of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain launch, we've now learned more about the stealth-action game's microtransactions. Specifically, a new image posted on Metal Gear Network reveals pricing details for Mother Base Coins, which you can use for the game's Forward Operating Base online mode.

Forward Operating Base is a secondary base where you can go head-to-head with other players; this is not to be confused with Metal Gear Online, the game's other mode that is coming in October. You can use the Mother Base Coins to speed up gameplay. For example, as you get to higher levels, new platforms on your base can take an hour or so to generate. But using the coins lets you accelerate that process.

Eh? A single package of DLC that's more expensive then the core game itself? A classic, terrible Clash of Clan milking method incorporated into a fully paid game...... No wonder why Kojima left Konami. This horrible company is heading toward creating and selling swallow contents for quick cash instead of masterpieces that would be remembered for many years to come. Good luck selling your chinkos...., eh, I mean pachinkos.

@Pyrosa: Meh. If a parent is silly enough to let a kid play a game with "Sexual Violence" as a reason it's rated M, they kinda deserve the changes to the card.

I don't have a problem with this. I sure as hell will never pay (additional) $80 for a full price game, but that's just me. Some people have very little time to play games (weird, right?), so if they want to pay for a boost and speed up the game (without having to grind for everything) then that's fine by me.

@warriors30: You are kind of right - it's not like they are withholding anything from us that we'd need to pay extra money for to unlock. If some people with less time wants to speed up the process by paying for it then fine by you and me.

But what I really fear is that the Forward Operating Base platforms will take an unnecessarily long time to generate to try to tempt more players to buy into the microtransactions. EA did something similar with their latest Dungeon Keeper a while back. No matter what, I'll never make any microtransactions but it will irritate me to no end if I feel like generating platforms in this game should have taken way less time than they do, but hey - they aren't because Konami wants more of my money.

@warriors30: The problem is the artificially-implemented systems desgined to lure people into paying.

They DESIGNED it to be slow -- it's not like you'd actually be laying the girders & doing the welding in-game if you didn't want to pay for it to be sped up.

@warriors30: Unless they purposefully made grinding tedious and long just to get more money, right? Like, if there was no microtransaction model, then the grinding may have been quicker to keep the player engaged. But since there's money to be made, making the player take longer to earn their fictional money will make more people spend real money. And that's just kind of sad.

@elheber: I agree, it's kind of a problem, but companies do it all the time. Personally, I don't mind grinding (to some extent), and I'm kinda used to it in other games, BUT it should always be a rewarding experience. Don't make me grind for 5 hours to get 20 of those Mother Base Coins. There should always be an (realistically) achievable goal/reward for me as the player.

These micro transactions that speed up tedious/laborious or grinding aspects of games are sly ways of upping the cost of a game. It would be very similar if movie theaters put in more ads before movies and during them and charge you extra if you want to watch a version without the ads.

People already have to pay $60 up front, is that really not enough? Do you NEED micro transactions to keep this game afloat? No. It's not freaking FTP geez. What does it cost Konami to put imaginary content like micro transactions in? NOTHING. They aren't selling you content, they're limiting the vision of the game by restricting a game mode to a grind fest because they're greedy. **** this practice.

Nothing like paying full price and still have this crap. But cause its Kojima we look away, but if it was ea or Activision we'd be raising pitchforks.

Just thinking, if 6000MB is priced at $80, then earning MB in game is going to be a lot harder than I initially thought. I would go as far as assuming that there is a cap on the amount you can earn in a day. MB specific mission might give you between 5-10 MB. I doubt they have it set up so that every mission gives MB, and I think it's safe to assume that any story relevant mission will not provide MB to the player. Look at other free to play models in recent games. I think it's safe to assume that konami followed similar guides or worse. I might not even play this mode it's that fact that micro transactions don't belong in a $60 game and the price of the micro transactions shouldn't come close to the price of the game let alone exceed it by $20. This is a disservice to a great series and all of the fans.

@Raged4Life: yeah it is quite bad and QUITE concerning , this BS of timed building its the worst of the f2p kind and the fact that the game cost 60 , and to play this mode you need a ps+ or xboxlive subscription too , add this and it summs a lot of money , thing im gonna pass on FOB and stay on the main game ( lest hope MGO its not this F2P garbage , considering how good it was on MGS 4)

The question isn't the price, the question is how hard is it to get things in the game? Do you need to spend a month grinding to get whatever the 80 dollars gives you? If so, it's a rip off. On the flip side if you only have to spend a few days grinding, then who cares, it's only for people stupid enough to waste that money.

Either way this is funding Konami so I won't even look at it. I'm sure no matter what this system will grow with the next installment with even more "micro"transactions implemented in it. Konami is going to milk MGS to death and we all know it.

@sargentpsgamer: So how much do you make per hour? Some people would call you stupid for grinding a few days just to save 80 bucks.

This post isn't supposed to point out that spending lots of money on micro transactions is a good thing, it's supposed to point out that "grinding" in a game for days is way more stupid since "grinding" in any job will get you more money in that time.

@Atzenkiller: I'm not sure you've considered how developers could purposefully make the game more "grindy" just so more people would spend the money. This is the point @sargentpsgamer was making. There's nothing inherently wrong with making a player work for rewards, because in the past developers designed their games to make grinding fun. They add grinding to pad out a game's length, but balanced it enough so it's still fun to play. However, in a microtransaction model, making the grinding elements fun is counter to making money. The more tedious, the more likely a gamer will want to skip that shit with some money.

Just because spending money is "cheaper" than spending time, doesn't mean either is worth it. Imagine if a restaurant told you that you can get a hotdog if you wash 2 hours worth of dishes -or- with $15. "Wow, I get paid $10 an hour, so $15 for that hotdog is a steal!"

@elheber: Grinding was fun? My definition of it is to be doing the same boring, repetitive tasks over and over again just to get some reward at the end of it. If you're having fun you're not really grinding. Of course if the grinding itself is fun because you're doing it with other people, yeah, that's still grinding. Watching the grass grow is fun, too, with people.

Again, I didn't say it's better to spend money, only that it's just as stupid to waste your time grinding. If it feels like grinding and you don't wanna do it but do it anyway, yep, that's wasting your time and in that case if you have the choice of wasting your time grinding in a game or grinding in a job that makes you more money than you would pay for the game the choice should be obvious.

Of course the best choice is always to spend your time to find a way around it. In this case finding a way to get around the blocks the devs implemented or to make more money. But of course grinding is what most people tend to go for since it's the easiest and most mind numbing choice.

Man, that example. A hotdog worth $15 is worth $15. If you have the choice to get payed 1 dog per hour that you could sell for $15 or $10 in cash would you really choose the cash? That's simple mathmatics dude.

@Atzenkiller: RPGs have had grinding since the dawn of time. It served many functions, one of the most prominent was padding out the game length. However, developers had to make the game still be fun even when grinding. RPG battles still had to be challenging and skill-based instead of time-based. MMORPGs charge you for the time playing their game, and if grinding wasn't fun enough, their subscribers would drop. Back to RPGs, Bravely Default, for example lets you change the random encounter rate to speed up more challenging encounters or slow down to make it easier.

However, in a FTP model (in this case "fee to pay"), the more fun the grind is, the less people will spend to skip it. If the FOB game were actually free, even to people who didn't buy the single-player game, I honestly wouldn't mind a FTP model. But this isn't the case.

I think you misread my hotdog example. I said it takes 2 hours to earn 1 hotdog, not 1 hotdog per hour.

Listen, guys, you don't have to defend this. Kojima probably didn't want microtransactions in his game and was given no choice. This is a Konami thing and as we all know, "**** Konami." Protest buy not buying into this hot garbage. That money is going to Konami, not Kojima.

Some of my PSN friends don't even know what's going on with Konami and none of them care either just like they didn't care 1886 was worth thirty bucks but they paid sixty. Konami knows this that's why they are trying to profit on it.

@FSOTP: for me the problem its not the grind ( lots of games have grinding ) the problem is if this mode (FOB) is balanced arround this "micro"transaction, the idea of having time building like some shite facebook game on a FULL PRICED 60$ game ( wich you also need ps+ or xboxlive on consoles) is BS i dont minde grinding but having the experience be a drag only because ****$ you give me money ( go angryjoe :P) istBS

@elitegamingguru: Well if you consider watching intentionally-extended progress bars a part of the experience then knock yourself out...

I don't think the waiting should be considered a part of the game itself... although I'm with you and am certainly not buying this nonsense, the FOB stuff is just a distraction from the main game for me anyway.
