Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain Microtransaction Pricing Revealed [Update]

Micropayments range from $1.65 to $80 for Mother Base Coins.

[Update: It has since emerged that the prices listed below are in New Zealand dollars. New details on Metal Gear Solid 5's microtransactions system can be found through the link.]

Ahead of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain launch, we've now learned more about the stealth-action game's microtransactions. Specifically, a new image posted on Metal Gear Network reveals pricing details for Mother Base Coins, which you can use for the game's Forward Operating Base online mode.

Forward Operating Base is a secondary base where you can go head-to-head with other players; this is not to be confused with Metal Gear Online, the game's other mode that is coming in October. You can use the Mother Base Coins to speed up gameplay. For example, as you get to higher levels, new platforms on your base can take an hour or so to generate. But using the coins lets you accelerate that process.

The Phantom Pain launches on September 1 for console and PC. The game is receiving high marks from critics, including a 10/10 score from GameSpot.

What a deal! Paying $80 for 6000 play coins saves you $20 if you were to buy them in 100 coin increments. It also saves you hours of playing a game that you paid for. You spent money to play it, now spend money to not play it! YEAH!

Yes Konami, we'll all pay you $80 for virtual currency after paying $60 for the main game. Sure.

Meanwhile back in reality...

@Brazucass: Sad part is the rich people aren't really the ones spending this kind of money. Rich people are usually smarter than to waste their money on dumb things like this.

It's the poor stupid people with maxed out credit cards who'll fund this. As they slip further and further into debt.

@Thanatos2k: If you are rich, and smart, you'll spend money on this. It's stupid to waste your time on grinding. Sad part is you think otherwise.

Micro (small, miniscule, tiny) transaction. What part of $80 U.S. is "micro"? I actively avoid MT's in general, and always read reviews on DLC to see if it's worth buying. I know when this hits the UK and here in Northern Ireland, exchange rates will be all but forgotten as per usual, equating to a £79.99 tag at the top tier. This is beyond ludicrous. They don't even bother hiding it now. At least Dick Turpin wore a mask. I honestly think some marketing douche just mashes a calculator like "ERMAGHERD" and whatever pops up, that's DLC/MT pricing. And here's me thinking that Evolve had already clinched the insane 'extras' pricing award, but it would appear they were just setting a precedent.

This doesn't really change anything. Just play single player and on October 6th enjoy MGO. Not that hard to avoid being fucked by this.

@turdburgler: So you are defending anti-consumer behavior just because "it doesn't change anything." It DOES change things, dude. It sets a HORRIBLE precedent that this is okay in a full price game. It ISN'T okay at all, and writing it off as not a big deal is what these giant corporations WANT. Just say no no anti-consumer behavior. Don't just accept it as okay.

@Orga777: Lmfao. Never said I was accepting anything. It doesn't and won't affect me in the slightest. As long as I don't buy them they never will. How about you stop complaining and just play the game WITHOUT using microtransactions. The reason game companies keep adding microtransactions is because they sell. 13 year olds ask their moms for their credit cards. People who have no lives want an advantage. The only way microtransactions will go away is if we don't buy the game and you can go jump off a bridge if you think I'm not gonna get the LAST Metal Gear game. Now go bring your bs to a Konami forum or something.

@fastica: I don't think you judgmental people understand what I'm saying. I don't care what the game companies do. I don't care about the problem. If you care so much about the gaming community(which doesn't really care in the first place) go talk to developers but you won't do that and even if you did they would do what they want with their game. Listen kiddies money makes the gaming industry go round. Nothing you internet bums do matter with what's happening to these games. Stop pretending like you care and yet do nothing. Enjoy the last Metal Gear game and DON'T use microtransactions. I'll leave it at that .

Wonder if this is why Kojima is saying sayonara to Konami? This pay model looks like something you'd see on a mobile game built for suckers. Pay extra money or play at a snails pace. If you are just playing single player only, I guess it's not that big a deal. 10/10 or not though, I think I'll wait and see how this crap turns out.

@bdrtfm: He's saying sayonara to Konami because, since MGS2, he has tried to start new projects and every time they told him to sit the f*ck down and keep making MGS.

Guys, there's a trophy for earning 10million MB.

6000 MB is $80?

It seems overpriced, but not hard to get.

Why do people still defend MT's as a convenience feature? That's the dumbest logic I've ever seen. A convenience feature would be a cheat code; this is a blatant double-dip ripoff by scumbag executives.

I guess the one upside of this is that it gives me an excuse to turn the MP FOB stuff off entirely and not get invaded by griefers while trying to play SP content.

@goodgamesguy: That's like saying gun laws don't affect me because I don't buy guns. They affect you. Maybe earning "Mother Base Coins" would have been easier or more fun all-around if enticing people to buy them wasn't on the table.

PS. I'm not being political about gun laws one way or the other. It was just an example.

@goodgamesguy: Except that they do. If a game has microtransactions, that means that the grinding has been made slower and more tedious to tempt you into using those microtransactions. So the game is worse for everyone except the suckers that shell out extra after paying full price.

@unreal849: I don't agree with micros at all I think it's bullshit and the gaming industry is getting greedier and greedier and losing quality because of it. With that being said in any game I play that they appear in I simply avoid them so I'm not adding to the problem.

@goodgamesguy: Exactly. Everyone is bitching as thought the company is making them buy microtransactions. I'll play some of that online multiplayer, but the sole reason for my MGS is single player and single player only.

I thought the FOB idea was kind of cool until this, now you're going to be at an instant disadvantage to anyone willing to spend the extra cash to upgrade their base quickly. I know some people can drop $80 on such trivial stuff and not even bat an eye I personally can't justify it though heh, I can afford it but for me the money would be more wisely used elsewhere.

If you want microtransactions sell fluff content, new cool looking armors or weapons blueprints, I say blueprints as that way you still have to gather the resources in game to build them. Don't sell stuff that clearly gives you an edge in a competitive environment kind of defeats the entire point.

It's not a non-seller for me as I'm getting the game more for the single player anyway but I do like to dabble with the multi-player and this aspect certianly lessens my enthusiasm for it. When I watched the video of the FOB stuff it seemed kind of cool but w/o even have played it yet it's obvious to see how a person who can upgrade their FOB much faster will have a clear advantage over other people. This is especially silly to have included when you factor in that if you lose in the FOB that person can steal stuff from your FOB. So basically you're allowing players to pay for the privelege of taking items from other players. Why would I ever participate in that.

These are the US costs, I dread to think what they will be for the UK. I dare say that it will translate as:

Sony DLC/Micro Transaction rep: "And how much would you like it to be for the UK sir?"

Konami: "**** them, just change the Dollar sign to a Pound sign, we're ripping them all off anyway."

--i think someone needs to form some kinda a gamer's coalition

--and refuse to buy any AAA hardcore console game if it has microtransactions
