Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain Microtransaction Pricing Revealed [Update]

Micropayments range from $1.65 to $80 for Mother Base Coins.

[Update: It has since emerged that the prices listed below are in New Zealand dollars. New details on Metal Gear Solid 5's microtransactions system can be found through the link.]

Ahead of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain launch, we've now learned more about the stealth-action game's microtransactions. Specifically, a new image posted on Metal Gear Network reveals pricing details for Mother Base Coins, which you can use for the game's Forward Operating Base online mode.

Forward Operating Base is a secondary base where you can go head-to-head with other players; this is not to be confused with Metal Gear Online, the game's other mode that is coming in October. You can use the Mother Base Coins to speed up gameplay. For example, as you get to higher levels, new platforms on your base can take an hour or so to generate. But using the coins lets you accelerate that process.

The fact that it has microtransactions, for a game you're already paying 60 for, automatically make this game a 7/10 for me. Stupid, stupid Konami.

You can earn these coins in-game according to multiple sources. I love how people freak out without knowing exactly what the situation. Then again: there are a LOT of people that..... lets say.... are really, really dumb. Also: for those of you saying that microtransactions are the company being greedy and that it always backfires.... there is something called the 90-10 rule that can be applied to a lot of things in life. 10% of people earn 90% of the money, 10% of people do 90% of the work..... 10% of people will buy 90% of the microtransactions. While many people hate microtransactions: they wouldn't offer them if people didn't buy a lot of them. I've personally spent maybe $20 in my life on microtransactions..... 2 bucks on Dead Space, maybe a buck on Dead Space 3, 10 bucks on Dust 514 (which was to support the game since it's a f2p) and the rest to support Path of Exile.... however my 12 y/o nephew has spent a couple hundred bucks of his mom's cash on GTAV Online in-game money. If the 90/10 rule applies here and that 10% averages $60 in extra spending- that's an extra 10% profit without any overhead. THAT is who they are targeting.

ps It's fun to play around with the 90-10 rule.... it fits in a LOT of different situations.

That is some unbelievably shitty parenting. It's really amazing how the next generation of parents keep getting increasingly stupider and ignorant.

Business is business...it's like the old stock market saying, "If you're not up, your down".

I wish there was a way to make this portion just a mobile app game instead of part of the whole game. Microtransactions are indeed the worst.

@40mdf0: Well, at this point, I haven't heard anything that SEPARATES the FOB's from your regular base. From what I've heard, you use regular in game currency, to help build your FOB's. If, and I say IF, they're not separate, that would mean the MP base constructions that aren't supposed to be tied into SP, have SP paytimers that will stall the game. Meaning that as many, myself included thought, these ARE going to slow down and frustrate gameplay to induce paying for progress.

I could not see any video only thing on my screen was a black screen. The microtransactions sound like how they work in cell phone games it sounds terrible sounds like it would take forever just to build new struts for your FOB where if you pay it will happen instantly. This will probably lead to certain players buying the Mother base points and upgrading there FOB quickly and having access to more equipment and resources while players who aren't willing to buy Mother Base points will likely behave a tougher time against there enemies.

I don't know man I feel like with the huge advantage they will get from having a larger FOB with a lot of defenses gaining them a ton of extra resources they will blow right thru you me and practically everyone else playing the legit way that steps in their path. They be able to buy a big enough FOB that just navigating it will be a difficult task.

@elitegamingguru: Exactly tell it like it is angry Ned! Let them come.

Toys DO NOT make a soldier, Tactics, training and life do, Isn't that the ENTIRE point of these games.

Micro transactions for better stuff kinda deviates from the games core ideals XD

Anyways i'm ready for this shit...Trust.

811 VR missions completed 1st place, Big Boss or equivalent "Fox" rank on all games.

@ILSATS: Lol at this guy acting the mug, Commenting on shit for the pure sake of it.

FFS In this context soldier translates to player.

And given the sophisticated nature and the amount of drones on real battlefields these days some soldiers ARE technically playing games, Shit they were even using xbox controllers at one point. XD

Not saying it makes em better soldiers, But its blatantly good for hand eye coordination.

@sat_idle: for me it seems that you can pay money to win competitive multiplayer. that's all sorts of lame. micro transactions don't really bother me otherwise. people want to spend money on cosmetic bullshit gouge them all you want mr. developer.

@sat_idle: Microtransactions in a game people already paid full price for.

And yes, this isn't the only game to do it, neither is it the most egregious example, but the fact remains it's unnecessary and - frankly - doesn't have a right to exist. It's just a means of getting people who have no patience to cheat their way into the lead with the FOB system.

@DanielL5583: I'd actually have no problem with such a practice if it was for an single player mode. But removing any incentive for time investment in the multiplayer part is simply encouraging player to either pay or to simply sell the game back after they're done with the single player, removing them a 60$ in the way by providing Gamestop or else a used copy...

This is what happens when marketting and advertising jerks get ahold of our entertainment. Sleazeball business suits trying to suck every dollar out of you. Day 1 there will be rich skill-less punks mopping FOB up and collecting whatever it is they collect.

Nice dirty little trick also.. releasing a locked version of the game for review and then the day before release (after everyone has already preordered for delivery) releasing the truth that is does in fact have a pay wall in place.

Dosent matter how subtle it is, it's still a pay wall and an advantage however 'irrelevant' some may claim, to the game it self.

There is some of the game, on your $60 disc, that YOU cannot access unless you pay more money. If you do not think that is wrong, you are everything that is wrong in gaming.

@kalibore: He probably said that cause there is no "some of the game, on your $60 disc, that you cannot access" really. The thing they are selling you is the currency to obtain such content faster. The currency can indeed be obtained by just playing the game and the content per se is accessible to everyone, these transactions just hurry up the process and removes the currency grinding.

Either if Konami is going to include actual in-game content behind a pay wall in the future or not, neither you or me know at this point :)

We are the guinea pigs for Konami as they want to shift to the mobile market and make games that have these microtransactions in them. This is basically them probably test running it to see how well it does. I hate it personally and can't stand Pay to Win games honestly.

I feel sick just reading this... Throwing what is essentially a mobile game on a full $60 game experience that has no use for it what so ever is sickening. The mere fact that it exists at all in the game should be a detriment, and should make the game at least lose one whole point. I wouldn't even be surprised that when this was first brought up in development Kojima thought it was stupid, which set him on a path that caused friction with the idiots at Konami, which lead to him leaving the company.

So... like Jim Sterling says... F___ Konami!

Big surprise, the game is designed around the micro-transactions. This shit is starting to get ridiculous. I have been just as excited as anybody for this game but, this is inexcusable! If you are defending this shit saying "it's not pay to win and doesn't affect how you play the game" then you're a damn fool. I don't care if I can unlock everything in the game without these micro-transactions. The game is designed around them and their presence is inexcusable in a game I've already paid $60 for!
