Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain Humiliates Players With Chicken Hat

Nobody calls Snake chicken.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will include a special chicken hat item that will make the game easier, the game's designer Hideo Kojima has announced.

Kojima revealed the new item during a special Christmas stream. Metal Gear fans watched the three hours-long video, probably hoping for some more exciting news or maybe even a release date, but it wasn't until the 2:45:00 mark that Kojima made his big reveal, which in the end was nothing more than the chicken hat.

According to Kotaku, the game will offer players the item if they keep dying and retrying the same section. If they choose to wear it, enemies will be slower to spot and react to players. The only price is the humiliation of looking like a chicken.

The Phantom Pain launches in 2015 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. A PC version of the open-world game is also in the works, but Konami has not announced a release date for it.

Is there an option to play on hard mode, but still wearing the hat?
That is one damn fine hat.

This is great because those people that throw it on easy and beat it super fast will record gameplay and people will know for a fact they are noobs.

Maybe Dark Souls 3 should do that. Your character could look like Sailor Moon and the death screen could say "You died like a bitch."

Let's just be clear: Humiliation is a voluntary emotion.

Every successful person I've ever met has been very emotional anyway, as their emotions motivate them towards success.

Clever. On the other hand, if many players play the rest of the game smoothly but get stuck on a particular section, then that section is badly designed. The chicken hat would then feel arrogant and irresponsible.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> If it sees widespread use for a few specific sections of the game, it means those sections are poorly designed, more specifically, poorly balanced and integrated into the rest of the game. Then this hat insinuate the responsibility is on part of the player, not the developer, and that's arrogant and irresponsible.

Just in case, I'll state the obvious: if someone needs to play the whole game wearing the hat, then he should just lower the difficulty.

the fact is this hat is no different to stealth gear or the ammo bandana neither of which you ever have to use, they are there as a bit of fun

more importantly why do you even care how someone else is playing? let them play how they like

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I failed to specify that 30% (again, random number) can't be dominated by a subgroup. It has to be representative of the entire target audience. If 30% of people who play MGS 5 to see the story, and they are the only ones to use the hat on a mission, I agree that's a convenience or a choice, not a problem.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I think everyone should be able to play the way they want. That's one of my core principles; I'm sorry if I came off sounding otherwise. I'm talking about one point in game design.

A few people's usage doesn't warrant public discussion. I don't know what percentage of players have to use the hat on a mission, when not using it habitually for similar missions or the game, for me to consider it a problem. I have no basis for calculation, so I'll just pull something out: 30%?

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> That's not the point being discussed. And it's a weak, non-sensible argument many people make when in defense of a game design fault.

A game can be consistently challenging from the beginning, like the Souls games. A game can offer a diverse array of activities as its premise, challenging each player to some activities he/she doesn't normally do. A game can have side activities for enjoyment. In none of these cases will the "chicken hat" be used in the way I described. However, when an otherwise fluid RPG suddenly throws up a grind wall, or when a puzzle game suddenly shoots up a dexterity bar, these are design failures, usually.

MGS 5 is an open world game, so I expect more missions that diverge from stealth gameplay. That's not a problem, although I think Kojima is tipping the hat to that possibility. A problem would be a key mission leads to many players' using the hat but not for similar missions before or after.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I don't think its cheesy, its fun and shows a great deal of self-awareness. People are always asking for greater immersion in games, and they hate what Kojima is doing in constantly breaking immersion. But what people don't get - and what Kojima understands - is that the player is always going to break immersion because a game is just a game, i.e. you run into walls, you can't get to certain openings, game logic, etc... So if you can't fight it, join the fun.
