Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance PC version requires Internet connection? [UPDATE]

A fix is on the way.

[UPDATE] Konami is aware of the issue and a fix is on the way.

The original story is below.

The PC version of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance launched today, but its arrival was not without issue.

Numerous Steam users are reporting today on the game's forums and to Kotaku that the single-player game will not function without an Internet connection. The game reportedly will not start while in Steam's offline mode. What's more, if your Internet connection drops, you'll supposedly be kicked from the game right away.

It is possible that the issue is a simple bug and not any kind of DRM from Konami, but that remains to be seen. We've reached out to Konami for comment but have not heard back yet.

As Kotaku points out, the Steam product page for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance does not inform purchasers that the game requires an Internet connection. The game originally launched for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in February 2013.

The PC version includes previously released DLC (Blade Wolf, Jetstream, and VR Missions) and runs at 60 fps.

I dont mind because i buy legal copies even though i could pirate, Always online is good because that makes it impossible for pirates to crack some games. They are not supporting the community and should not have a say.

Always online is impossible to crack? You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Always online is just another DRM to annoy legal customers, pirates will always find a way around. Heck, even MMOs get pirated
, have you ever heard of "private servers"? You can easily play WoW, Blade & Soul, Aion or any other MMO for free. Of course the experience will not be same, cause in those cases, the server side of the game is emulated and it usually lacks a certain amount of features present in the official server, but hey, it's free, and a lot of peeps play them.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Some are some are not take c&c 4 for instance i know it was cracked. It is much harder to crack always online games. I know what im talkin about im an old pirate myself buying games now supporting pc development even though i could get most for free , imagine that. Those pirate servers are usually empty or extremly low on people.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Same here, used to pirate games all the time but now I buy them. I do however get so tired of servers and all that deleting my saves or wiping everything, Steam wiped 3 characters back then on Skyrim, all lvl80+ so I eventually just got a crack for the game. I bought so I'm allowed to crack the damn thing to avoid the DRM wasting my time.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I'm a retired pirate myself, so trust me, I know what I'm saying. DRM never stopped me to play any game I wanted to, and although I'm not really proud of myself, I played some MMOs on private servers and they were quite well populated.

So, yeah, it is indeed harder to crack a game with server side code, but if it's popular enough, it will be done.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Lol, this game has already been cracked. DRM just motivates people to pirate. It's sad but that's the truth. Besides, there are people who can't be online 24/7

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yes i know they do but many have not been like the new simcity or diablo 3. People will have a hard time freeloading on that thats why i support the model. Any player that has income to buy a good gaming pc also should have good internet connection available, bandwith will increase during the next years all over so there should be no reason to not support it unless youre in bed with pirates. Pirates are more peasants than console owners to me.

I wish they would take into consideration that not everyone has a stable, unlimited, or dependable ISP provider where they live at here in the USA. It is easy to say if you do not like your internet then move but sometimes that would be moving to another state, not just down the road.

There are soo many different ways to prevent pirating then always online drm.

Nothing is more frustrating then when a new pc game comes out and the servers at 'their' end cannot handle the traffic and it keeps you from playing the game, (sometimes for weeks- Diablo 3). Or the constant always online with the least amount of hiccup: family loggin on to watch netflix, afternoons on cable broadband when all the kids get home from school and lags it down, pass switches that hit when data moves from coast to coast, or almost anything that temporarily breaks packets from up and down loading.

While I hate any kind of always online since playing D3, Sims, and some steam games - if they would just reduced the internet check times to once or twice a day instead of all the time. I have played world of warcraft for years now but at least you do not lose a ton of progress. I know and understand that MMO require always online - with a living community of players- but single player games that you buy to just play the story mode offline, is unacceptable.

If it is a DRM some one will work around and make a patch then there will be pirating of this game, why in the first place they come with these stupid ideas to stop piracy. piracy in inevitable. It will only hurt their sales if genuine customers get this treatment of always online.

If Eurogamer is to be believed, it's an error on Steam's API what caused this and Platinum Games is going to fix the issue. Quoting NeoGaf user Guess Who: "This is definitely a function of the way MGR uses the Steam API. Using a modified steam_api.dll allows it to work in Steam Offline mode. I can't say whether it's a bug or deliberate implementation, but it's not any other sort of DRM, all Steam"

This is getting beyond stupid really... Its bad enough government and religion try to control what we do how we do it and when we are allowed to do it but gaming as of around the middle of last gen have started to try and control gamers via micro transactions, forced online, DRM etc its IMO complete BS. People wonder why governments are having such huge issues and same with religion and crap companies like EA and Capcom.. well its simple when you try to control or force your opinions and views on others who seriously do not want it you get chaos and drama and things tend to fall apart. All government etc need to listen to the people not listen to their wallets and greed.

Seriously these kind of errors/issues/bugs really hurt PC gaming community and also portray the message to the big game devs studio that PC community are less important than consoles and keep focus on console games development to avoid situations like this......this is really a big disappointment....

<< LINK REMOVED >> Agree, while i think console development will always be a forefront related to a more unified and simplified environment - things like Always Online AO and DRM that hinders gaming more then pirating make the pc gaming scene so hair pulling and frustrating that is puts another reason to just buy a console version then pc, thus making titles come out even later and usually with less care when ported over.

Before everyone jumps on Konami's throat, why not wait and see if it's a bug. The game just came out on Steam, did it not?

Doesn't really affect me since my PC is always connected to the internet regardless. (Who'd have figured.) The game runs, and plays like an absolute dream.

If it turns out that this is DRM then people SHOULD pirate it even if they don't play PC games or don't like the Metal Gear franchise. Piracy is the most effective tool and means a consumer has to fight corporate greed and to tell these greedy assholes that if this is how they are going to play then we are just going to steal their shit.
