Mass Effect: Andromeda Dev Discusses Romance Options, Shooter/RPG Balance, Potential DLC, and More

Yes, you can have inter-species romances.

Following the debut of the new Mass Effect: Andromeda trailer on N7 Day, BioWare creative director Mac Walters took to Twitter to answer some questions posed by fans of the series. In doing so, he has revealed some interesting tidbits about characters and story elements, as well as gameplay.

Walters confirmed that, although the two main characters are officially called Scott and Sarah Ryder, players will be able rename them and customise their appearance. This doesn't come as a surprise as similar options were available in previous entries in the series, as well as most other BioWare developed RPGs.

He also said that same sex romance options will be available and, as with previous games, there will be opportunities to develop relationships with alien species.

When it comes to gameplay, Walters said Mass Effect: Andromeda strikes a better balance between RPG and shooter than the first three Mass Effect titles, and that both of these aspects of the game have seen an upgrade.

The Ryder family is at the heart of Mass Effect: Andromeda's narrative. A previous trailer was narrated by Alec Ryder, father of the main characters. Little is known about him, other than he attained the prestigious N7 rank in the Systems Alliance Military.

When asked if BioWare would use DLC to further explore Alec, who the community has affectionally named "Rydad," Walters said it is a storyline that will be featured in the main game, but also in other projects. However, he did not specify what "other things" are.

The Mass Effect series has had a number of tie-in novels and comic books, so it could be that Andromeda's extended universe is adapted for these mediums, but this has not been confirmed officially.

Moving on to characters, Walters was asked about Peebee, the Asari featured in the trailer. He revealed Peebee is actually her nickname and added that, despite the resemblance, she's quite different from Aria T'Loak, the fierce Pirate Queen of Omega.

The mysterious voice that says "I have a bad feeling" in the latest trailer could also be a non-human species, based on Walters's teasing.

And the character that the trailer seemed to be positioning as a villain may not be male, despite initial impressions.

Finally, Walters indicated that the Codex, which serves as a library of information for all things within the Mass Effect universe, will be expansive.

As part of N7 Day, BioWare also revealed that loyalty missions are returning and talked about when the game is set in the Mass Effect timeline.

Mass Effect: Andromeda still doesn't have a release date, but it's expected to launch sometime in spring 2017. EA said in a recent earnings call that it would delay it if the game needed extra time, however. It is set to release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

I still wish there was a player codex instead of a character codex.

I always found it quite disturbing and silly that Bioware allows romantic relationships with fricking aliens. What kind of sick **** would be attracted to someone like Garrus, Krios or even Liara? Not to mention other aspects like how the hell does the romance with another species work on emotional level? Does every alien in the galaxy have humanlike reproductive organs? Etc.

@iskaroth: dude, you're not alone they're obsessed with some fuckin Japanese hentai alien tentacles sex. How disgusting haha :)

not to mention scientifically human sperm and eggs have membrane proteins that recognize same species gametes human eggs will only recognize human sperm, goat eggs will only recognize goat sperm, etc. Secondly, for a human (or any other animal, for that matter) to be viable, it must have the correct number of chromosomes.

in brief, Humans can't be impreganted by bestiality or alien impassable human species ..etc

@panda1990: Ha Ha! Technically aren't the asari producing the babies themselves with only the psychic influence of the other parent? I think it's parthenogenesis? Like with an Asari and a Krogan which is shown in Mass Effect the body is still 100% asari and only the psyche has Krogan influence. Otherwise there are no hybrids shown that I remember.

@couly:

I do not bother with Jimmy Vega's friend that much, he is Shepard's 2nd best pilot and that's it, nothing more, unless he would troll Shepard with his "strange" personality but he never did. Alliance choose Cortez piloting the Kodiak, that was not Shepard's choice or anything.

@couly: ME3 really wasn't any kind of LGBT space opera. And if you ran away as soon as a gay character showed up (one of the more believable gay characters Bioware's managed to write too) you really wouldn't know what that game was.

" EA said in a recent earnings call that it would delay it if the game needed extra time,"

How about concentrating on getting the game ready rather than a 'deluxe' or 'super deluxe' version.

@junesxing: Deluxe editions rarely take any extra time. The people that do all the physical extras aren't on the teams that do the software.

"Andromeda strikes a better balance between RPG and shooter than the first three Mass Effect titles,"

Considering I think that is what the first three games did VERY well. it worries me. What exactly does he see as being out of balance? This means Andromeda will be a lot heaver on the RPG or Shooter side, either option is not very appealing to me.

@sdzald: I'm kind of worried about that too. ME1 did not play very well because it couldn't decide if it was a shooter or an RPG. ME2 and 3 were better games for choosing to be shooters with RPG elements, instead of trying to straddle the fence.

@Thanatos2k: Simply having "more RPG" does not inherently make a better game. That said, it all depends on the form the RPG aspect takes. For example I would hate for the series to return to the weapon skill system of the first game; why in the heck would an elite solider war hero who already has the highest possible rank in the Alliance and fully trained not be able to use a shotgun until he invests points in it? That makes no god damn sense.

As much as RPG purists like to complain about the "just use whatever gun you pickup" system it makes sense for someone like a N7, because that is what N7 is; by virtue of being a seventh tier special forces solider (what N7 means) Shepard WAS in fact already fully trained with every type of weapon he'd ever run across.

However I am all for adding more depth to the game (note that contrary to popular belief depth and complexity are not the same thing, and one is not required for the other), and I think that is what people actually want. ME2 and ME3 weren't lesser RPGs because of their mechanics or the leveling system; they felt that way because you never had to actually change up your tactics and it had little room to actually plan and strategist; literally every party configuration with any build could tackle every mission in the game with roughly the same amount of challenge. And while on the one hand that shows fantastic system balance, it isn't really very engaging or deep. Why would you spend your time really digging into the systems and coming up with plans when "just shoot everything with whatever gun you have laying around" works just as well?

@arkhamcreed78: "ME2 and ME3 weren't lesser RPGs because of their mechanics or the leveling system"

Yeah they were. More focusing on chest high wall combat and nothing tactical. And the near removal of equipment. And the dumbing down of upgrades and abilities.

"they felt that way because you never had to actually change up your tactics and it had little room to actually plan and strategist; literally every party configuration with any build could tackle every mission in the game with roughly the same amount of challenge"

Yeah, there was definitely that too.

@sdzald: ME2 and 3 definitely skewed more to the shooter side; missions were more linear, they ditched the inventory and loot system from ME1 (how can you even call a game an RPG if you have a fixed amount of currency??? The only way to afford everything in ME2 was to make sure you bought the DLC!), truncated skill trees, no (or limited) open-world, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed ME2 and 3, am still a huge Mass Effect fan, and am really looking forward to Andromeda. IMO, I'd rather see it go heavier to the RPG side; if I want to play a shooter in space, then that's what Halo and (I guess now...) COD are for.

Eh why does it have to be twins. So lame when companies do that because it usually comes across cheesy/hokey. Are they trying to turn ME into a family sitcom (*shutters*)? I hope they will not allow sleeping with your family member or anything disgusting....

@sdzald: I doubt that'll ever happen; I'm still hoping for a movie based on the original trilogy. Andromeda seems to be more exploration-driven than the story-driven ME1-3 campaign, and so is less suited to a movie adaptation.

@bigdegs: I agree with the article writer's suggestion, although I'd learn more toward Alec Ryder being a big part of the first Andromeda Initiative novel (co-starring with Jien Garson) rather than the comics. I don't think they'll spend much or any time with Alec on a DLC. His story/mystery will probably mostly be covered in various side-missions during the main game.
