Marvel's X-Men Are Getting A Full Reboot Care Of Jonathan Hickman

Get ready for "HOX" and "POX"

Following Disney's Fox buy out and with both X-Men: Dark Phoenix and the much-delayed New Mutants on the way, the future of the X-Men is a little mysterious, though hopefully not for too much longer.

Even if you're not overly familiar with Marvel Comics, there's a good chance you've heard the name Jonathan Hickman at least in passing in these last few months. He's one of the major architects of Infinity, the crossover event that inspired whole swaths of both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and introduced the concept of Thanos' Black Order. Hickman's run on the main Avengers title lasted around 3 years and helped redefine the team for modern audiences all over again--both on page and screen.

Now Playing: Dark Phoenix - The X-Men Legacy Trailer

And now, another major arm of the Marvel universe is primed to get the Hickman treatment as he returns to Marvel for a major X-Men overhaul. Starting with two weekly, 6-issue mini-series called House of X and Power of X, Hickman plans to kickstart a brand new era of X-Men stories that will unfold across the Marvel universe in waves.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, the writer detailed his plans. "We needed to sell the idea that this is what we're going to be doing for the next few years. So if you want to read X-Men books during the run from late-July through September, House of X and Powers of X are the only new X-books available and everything that's going to follow is based on them. We wanted to be clear to the fans, to the stores, and just as importantly, to the creators who are going to be staffing these books in the future. We wanted the message to be very clear: This is a whole new era for the X-Men. This is what we're doing now."

The X-Men lines are no stranger to reboots and new issue number #1s. The latest volume of Uncanny X-Men was relaunched in 2018, hot on the heels of companion books like X-Men: Blue and X-Men: Gold, both of which kicked off with new #1s back in 2017; and X-Men: Red which concluded its mini-series run last year as well. Add to the list the X-Men adjacent Major X mini-series, still currently in progress and things get even more complicated.

Put plainly, the X-arm of the Marvel Universe is not currently the most accessible line of comics around. Though, as Hickman hopes, that will be soon to change.

"One, House of X, is a story about a pivotal month in the history of the X-men where everything changes for mutants on Earth," Hickman elaborated. "And the other, Powers of X, is a story about the history of mutants in the Marvel Universe. It works as a series of reveals and revelations where each issue of HOX that follows POX--and vice versa--makes you reinterpret the issue you had previously read."

Both 6-issue series will eventually culminate in what Hickman calls "wave 1" and "wave 2" of the rebooting initiative. "At the conclusion of our 12 weeks of HOX and POX, we'll be launching an entirely new universe of X-books. Some will be traditional fare, some carry through on ideas presented in HOX and POX. Some books are completely new concepts. I, personally, will be writing the ongoing flagship X-book," he said. "[...] We also just finished our plans for our 'Wave 2' books that will debut in 2020 and we're getting ready to hire talent for those."

House of X #1 and Power of X #1 hit stores on July 24 and July 31 respectively, everywhere comics are sold.

Comic books are so fucking complicated that I don't know how anyone follows them.
How about you just make X-Men Vol. 1, #1 and go from there? Reboot simplified.

Bit of a bait and switch, start the article about the movies, and switch into comics abruptly. I mean, it’s obvious pretty quickly, but why mention the movies at all if it isn’t relevant to the story?

@Tekcor: Because what they are laying down here in these comics is probably going to be the basis for the innevitable marvel studios reboot of the X-men films and their integration into the MCU.

Good, it is loooooong overdue for a good xmen saga. Age of apocalypse was the last good read I had about the xmen and I hope something epic comes out so I can get back into the xmen lore. Even better hope to see them back and stronger in the big screen because they were really neglected apart from a couple movies

Don't have a problem with this tbh, was more of a DC guy and couldn't really keep track of all this stuff.

Be a good entry point. Art looks nice as well, so... yay.

I'm worried about this, and what you're showing is making me even more so. I loved Hickman's New Avengers, Fantastic Four and Secret Warriors, but I disliked his Avengers and the end to Secret Wars. The problem I see with him is he goes too big, too fast and too weird most of the time. While that works in some situations, I doubt X-Men is in the right place for it. The books have been nowhere, in limbo, since Bendis closed his Uncanny X-Men, and while the new book is interesting, it has yet to find its voice, and the X-Men their purpose. I don't think anyone cares much for the Age of X-Man books, but they will eventually bring all those characters back, and if the team hasn't found itself then, we will go back to a plethora of titles going nowhere again. I hope Hickman can do his magic, but it looks very childish and out there for what X-Men books used to be.

@lionheartssj1: "The X-Men lines are no stranger to reboots" -- in fact they are so familiar with them I may just drop my Marvel Comics soon. I get about 30 titles a month subscription wise, about 20 DC and 10 Marvel. Marvel is SO HARD to keep up with because of these reboots. They just had Blue and Gold titles going, why not just keep those titles and change the content? Why go back to scratch again!!!
Its so hard to tell which comic is their "main title" and which are the throw away side projects, (especially in X-Men and Avengers). These past months with everyone coming back from the dead, what comics should you even buy? Marvel's been a mess since they started these constant reboots and the heroes fighting each other, (Civil War and Avengers vs X-Men, and the X-Men Schism). Its hard to tell what comics they will stick with, and for me, the most annoying part is with most subscription services - when a title reboots like this, you have to go in and manually switch your title to the new one or miss some issues, so this "little 6 week series followed by 2 new titles" is a real pain in the ass I have to stay on top of, (if I even want them). Ive liked some of Hickman's stuff, but some has been very convoluted and overly complicated and i didn't enjoy it.

@squidracerX: Seriously. I loved the comics as a kid, but I didn't give a shit about continuity, I just loved the art. Now I want some story to stick with and it's so fucking nonsensical and round-about that I have no idea how to jump in.

Just give me X-Men Vol 1, #1 - and go from there.
Why do they have to make it so complicated?

@lionheartssj1: because there sales are constantly getting lower and lower, they think constant reboots are the answer because #1s draw attention, but really the only reason they get bought is because speculators think they'll be the big seller.

Marvels actual problem is they are more concerned about filling out diversity and political checklist, than actually just writing a well conceived story.

I wouldnt be surprised if the reason for this reboot of X men has to do with Disney purchasing Fox.

so thye can mak the chracters origins and narrow enough to set groundwork for the eventual set of X men films and tv series that will spawn in the future

@alastor529: That seems to be a complaint I hear often...also big event/crossover fatigue. I stopped collecting around the crash in the 90s, mainly because they were going collector crazy with the #1s and the crossovers were getting too hard to keep up with. There have been a few gems I've read in TPB. The past 10-ish years most of the news I hear out of that world is how they've appeased intersectionality in some way and/or they've rehashed a major event that I read about in the 80s/90s again. The newest Secret Wars went ham with the story recycling concept.
