Marvel Snap Publisher Suffers Layoffs, Could Shut Down - Report

ByteDance's gaming arm, Nuverse, might be eliminated.

It looks like TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, will be shutting down several projects within its Nuverse gaming arm. Nuverse has most notably published Marvel Snap, as well as some other games such as Ragnarok X: Next Generation and One Piece: Blood Routes.

According to Reuters, ByteDance has reportedly told employees to stop working on unreleased games by December, which would impact hundreds of employees. Additionally, ByteDance is reportedly trying to divest from games that it has already released. While the casual gaming brand Ohayoo will reportedly still be featured on TikTok's sister app, Douyin, it also seems like ByteDance won't reenter the gaming market any time soon either.

In a statement given to Reuters, a ByteDance spokesperson said, "We regularly review our businesses and make adjustments to center on long-term strategic growth areas. Following a recent review, we've made the difficult decision to restructure our gaming business."

GameSpot has reached out to ByteDance for additional comment.

Marvel Snap has been a critical success and was crowned one of the best mobile games of 2022. It received native PC support via Steam this August. The potential cuts at ByteDance continue a worrying trend of widespread layoffs in the video game industry this year. Recently, Amazon Games laid off 180 employees, and other big companies such as such as Bungie, BioWare, and Ubisoft have also cut staff.
