Margot Robbie Is Producing a Monopoly Movie

After crushing the box office with her smash hit, Barbie, Margot Robbie is brining the Monopoly board game to the big screen.

Margot Robbie's Barbie movie may have only won a single Oscar for Best Original Song, but it was the biggest box office hit of 2023. Now, Robbie is looking ahead at an even more challenging property to adapt for the big screen: Hasbro's Monopoly board game.

Via Variety, Lionsgate announced at CinemaCon that Robbie will produce a Monopoly live-action film through her production company, LuckyChap, alongside her partners, Tom Ackerley and Josie McNamara. Monopoly was originally conceived as The Landlord's Game by Lizzie Magie in 1903 before it evolved into its current form as one of the most popular board games in the world.

Lionsgate has been attached to produce the Monopoly movie since 2015, and at one point, Kevin Hart was going to have a leading role in the film. That incarnation of the movie stalled out, but Hasbro assured fans in 2023 that the project was still alive. Although Monopoly has a signature character in the form of Uncle Moneybags, the real estate game has even less of a narrative than the Barbie doll line did before the film. Regardless, Lionsgate chairman Adam Fogelson assured attendees at CinemaCon that LuckyChap has already developed a take on the film.

"I could not imagine a better production team for this beloved and iconic brand than LuckyChap," said Fogelson. "They are exceptional producers who choose their projects with great thought and care, and join Monopoly with a clear point of view. We are tremendously excited to be working with the entire LuckyChap team on what we all believe can be their next blockbuster."

Although Robbie's star power would probably help fast track the project, there's no indication that she intends to take an on-screen role in Monopoly. Robbie has had success producing films that she didn't star in, including Promising Young Woman. Earlier this year, Robbie signed on to adapt The Sims as well. Additionally, Robbie is reportedly attached to produce an adaptation of Rob Liefeld's Avengelyne comic book series.
