March sees FFXIII, God of War III, Pokemon, Bad Company 2 sell over 1M - NPD

Four games go platinum as domestic industry bounces back by 6 percent; DS sells 700,800, Wii sells 557,500; 360 edges out PS3.

After a dreary year that saw just one monthly increase in domestic game sales, March came in like a lion…and left like a lion. Thanks to a slew of blockbuster releases, combined sales of non-PC game hardware, software, and accessories for the month increased 6 percent to $1.44 billion, according to the NPD Group.

"In terms of total revenue, March 2010 is the third best non-holiday month on record behind March 2008 and June 2008," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier in a statement.

Final Fantasy XIII sold 1.322 million units on the Xbox 360 and PS3.
Final Fantasy XIII sold 1.322 million units on the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Hardware sales were the sole dark spot, falling 4 percent to $440.5 million. In the console race, the DS was the top finisher with 700,800 units. In unsurprising second was the Wii with 557,500 units, followed closely by last month's top console, the Xbox 360, with 338,400 units. The PlayStation 3 had to make do with fourth place and 313,900 units, followed by the PSP with 119,900 units, barely ahead of the nearly 10-year-old PlayStation 2's 118,300 units.

"Wii experienced its best non-holiday sales month (hardware) since March 2009," said Frazier, who also called out the PS3. "Sony's PS3 hardware posted its eighth consecutive month of year-over-year increases. For the first time since its launch in the US, the PS3 has four titles in the Top 10, and was also the leader in console software sales."

Sony's God of War III helped US non-PC software sales shoot up in March, rising 10 percent to $875.3 million. The PlayStation 3 exclusive topped NPD's top 10 list with 1.1 million units sold, the first time a game for Sony's platform has done so since Metal Gear Solid 4 in 2008.

That said, NPD's top 10 lists the highest-selling game software products--aka SKUs--and does not combine sales of multiplatform games. Were it to do that, Nintendo would have the top software prize with twin installments in its megapopular Pokemon series, which are ranked as the same game on Japanese sales charts. Some 1.02 million Pokemon SoulSilvers were taken, and 761,200 Pokemon HeartGolds were captured during the month, for a total of 1.78 million.

Another multiplatform release that went platinum was the long, long, long-awaited Final Fantasy XIII. Combined, the game sold 1.322 million units, moving 828,200 copies on the PS3 and 493,900 on the Xbox 360. Square Enix will likely see the latter figure as vindication for its controversial decision to bring the role-playing game to Microsoft's console outside Japan.

The month's last multiplatform platinum game was Battlefield: Bad Company 2, from Electronic Arts' Swedish studio DICE. The first-person shooter opened with a bang, selling a combined 1.276 million units. The Xbox 360 version of the game came in fourth on NPD's top 10 list with 825,500 million units, while the PS3 version trailed in eighth with 451,200 units.

Rounding out the top 10 were two perennial chart fixtures--New Super Mario Bros. (seventh) and the Wii Fit Plus Balance Board bundle (ninth)--and MLB 10: The Show, Sony's well-reviewed baseball sim for the PS3.

Was expecting more from GoW but then again all games in the action adventure genre sell low and even then GoW demolishes those games in sales(DMC, NG, Bayonetta etc)

@ aliasghar96 I can admit that PS3 only has Gran Turismo 5 (the REAL one...FINALLY) left this year as far major exclusives are concerned. They've played their "system seller" card already for the 1Q and now have to wait until late 3Q and 4Q for their next major attack. Fanboys can't handle the truth when the system or company they so blindly pledge allegiance to isn't favorable for them.

Im surprised that theres such a gap in sales between the 2 pokemon games... Maybe the ps3 sold more FFXIII is because, when choosing a console, you think abouth the franchises that are likely to appear on it? I chose PS3 over 360 because of MGS and FF were more likely to appear on it (plus not wanting to pay for xbox live, but thats different).

@ Tro2k4 I get u man. I mentioned the truth by saying that I don't see many AAA ps3 exclusives coming out so far besides Gran Turismo 5 but a ps3 fanboy don't want to here that. Denial is a disease indeed.

So wait, isn't the real winner here the DS (again) and Pokemon (again)? Although what's really confusing is the Wii's increased sales numbers despite not having a new release on the Top Ten software...what exactly were people buying a Wii for?

And people thought that FFXIII was going to sell more on the 360. PS3 version of FFXIII doubles the amount sold on the 360 version and the 360 version of BFBC2 doubles the amount sold on the PS3 version, this makes a lot of sense.

Funny how I got a "thumbs down" for makin a neutral statement about the number of 360's sold. RROD/E74 is real. I know the typical 360 fanboy don't like to hear about that stuff but it is what it is. Denial is a disease...

Anyway I didnt mention the highest rated or the top seller, I clearly put the best, most popular(of course most popular includes sales, avatars, etc) and the oldest!!! Dont be such a fan boy, it is almost impossible to define the best, but definely GOW wins for a bit.

118,300 PS2s were sold in March, 2010. PS3 sales could be different if Sony concentrates on the PS3 and stops selling the PS2 already.

@TTDog I think of it this way... If there are more 360s sold in the U.S., then shouldnt they also have more FF13 sold on 360 than PS3 because Microsoft has a bigger fanbase in the U.S.? I am actually shocked that only 489,000 units were sold on the 360. This is what happened, there are many like me who have both systems, but we prefer this game on PS3. I think many 360 owners decided to get this on for the PS3, and Im sure many of them may have bought a PS3 just to not own it on the 360.

@rgn1rountree, The ones who are buying PS2's are people that have a PS3 w/o backwards compatibility. Oh and those who are on a tight budget.

@TTDog , Actually, FF was originally a Nintendo franchise, it then moved to Sony platforms. Who's saying it won't go multi-platform some day? Well, it seems it has. Also, FFXIII for the 360 has been announced for some time now (E3 2008 ), so I'm pretty sure that gave, to those indecisive, people enough time to choose between one of the consoles, given the game was announced 2 years prior to that E3 and released 2 years later. Again, I'm not being a fanboy, but that's just how things are. Anyone, in their right mind, will say that the PS3 has the better FFXIII version, because it's a fact that it does. That justifies the higher sales numbers. The same way that the 360 has some titles that are superior than their PS3 counter-parts.

@TTdog fanboy alert fanboy alert!!! 360 fanboys can gimme thumbs down and call me a sony fanboy even though I got both systems. PS3 is downright getting a buncha sales right now so much that they are struggling to even make new systems and get it out in time because so many people are buying a ps3. And ps3 is getting more and more sales and making more and more money. 360 fanboys can cry, thumb me down, and trash and flame me all they want but it's the truth.

@Code-Llama: How can Microsoft lose FF fans to Sony... when FF has only ever appeared on the 360 via the online game? Previously FF was only available on Sony machines, you had to have a Sony machine to play it, now you don't, 489,000 copies sold to people who would normally have had no choice other than to play it on the PS3... that's 489,000 of non PS3 owners playing a game, 489,000 PS3's Sony didn't sell to FF fans. Personally I can't stand the series... I just love seeing Sony fans get wound up when they lose an exclusive that Sony themselves bought themselves in the past... Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, etc..

@TTDog , I'm by no means a Sony fanboy, but you're lacking logic if you ask me. Can't the same thing be said reversed? I mean, the PS3 sales represent FF fans who Microsoft has lost to Sony. That's even more of a lack of success. Nearly 1 million X360s they didn't sell. There was never a FF on the PS3, so you can't use the "FF is a PS3 franchise" logic. Some people chose to buy a 360, others chose the PS3. That's that, FFXIII is awesome, so just cut the faboyism chatter. Honestly, you sound just as much of a fanboy as the rest of them.

Like I said logic is something that PS3 fanboys don't grasp... it may have sold way more copies on the PS3 but the 360 sales represent FF fans who Sony have lost to Microsoft... half a million PS3 they DIDN'T sell... hardly a sucess. And VGChartz... hardly a credible source, the PS3 is winning in Japan, roughly neck and neck in Europe and losing in the US... even allowing for the Japanese sales it's looking like at least 5 years to catch the 360 at current sales rates... yeah... the PS3 is doing real well. And you've got to love Sony fans getting wound up by FF's presence on the 360... it's not like it started on the PlayStation, they stole it off Nintendo, and Metal Gear was around long before the PlayStation but the fanboys still get upset that Metal Gear is going multiformat... it was okay for Sony to steal them, but it's a heinous crime when they go elsewhere after that... hypocracy for the win!!!

@RitsukoEX I enjoy enjoy certain aspects of my 360, but its true I am a Sony fanboy, and still mad the FF13 ever went to the 360. Touchy topic, lol. Thats why my copy is for the PS3. Its sacreligous to play it on the 360. Same goes for gears of War. I would never play the new Gears of War game on the PS3, even if it became a multiplat. That game belongs on the 360.

@TTDog OK, maybe you got the numbers confused here. 828,200 Units of FF13 were sold on PS3, which is a lot more than 493,900 units on 360. And you say there is a failure on Sonys part??? How? they won in sales. "People bought a 360 instead of a PS3" What are you talking about. PS3 is trailing the 360 in sales here in the US and vastly outselling the 360 in worldwide sales. Look at the numbers. VGchartz.com.

@otakubr no, PS3 is already beating the 360 in sales. These numbers are only the numbers here in the U.S. PS3 has been outselling the 360 in worldwide sales for a very long time. The PS3 will end up passing the 360 in total sales perhaps as soon as a year or year and a half.

338,400 - 33% = 226,728. This is more likely the TRUE number of NEW customers as the other 111,672 consoles went out to people who are simply replacing a 360 that died out on them with the "Arcade" package because they don't go through all the hassle of sending in for RROD/E74 repairs and being without a system for 2+ weeks.

Think of it this way... nearly half a million 360 sales of FF13 is half a million sales they would never have made if it had been a 360 exclusive so that's a victory for Square Enix... at the same time that's half a million console sales that Sony never got because people bought a 360 instead of a PS3 which is a mark of failure for Sony. Sorry to use logic there... I know a lot of Sony fanboys can't comprehend that but that's their problem...not mine.
