Manhunt 2 receives AO rating

ESRB tags Rockstar sequel with Adults Only initial rating; Take-Two now exploring its options.

Earlier today, the British Board of Film Classification gave Manhunt 2 a thumbs down, banning it from sale in the UK due to its "unremitting bleakness" and "casual sadism." Now it appears the Entertainment Software Rating Board is ready to hand down its own most restrictive rating to the latest controversial offering from Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games.

A Take-Two representative told GameSpot today that the ESRB has issued an initial rating of AO for Adults Only to Manhunt 2. While not an outright ban, the rating would severely limit a game's sales potential, as most major American retailers have chosen not to carry games rated AO.

As for the reason this is only an "initial" rating, when the ESRB rates a game, it notifies the publisher 30 days prior to publicly releasing its decision. This gives publishers unhappy with ratings the chance to either modify their games and resubmit them for a second assessment, or go before the ESRB's appeals board to challenge it directly.

"We believe the process of rating video games is to help people make informed entertainment choices and not to limit them," a Take-Two representative said. "Manhunt 2 was created for mature audiences and we strongly believe it should receive an M (Mature) rating, aligning it with similar content created in other forms of media. We are exploring our options with regard to the rating of Manhunt 2."

While Take-Two doesn't agree with the idea of an AO-rated Manhunt 2, one parent watchdog group believes it's only appropriate. Earlier today, Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood demanded that the ESRB give Manhunt 2 an AO rating, saying that "harmful effects of ultra-violent video games on children will be magnified by playing them on the interactive Nintendo Wii system."

The group's announcement contained a statement from Dr. Michael Rich, director of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children's Hospital Boston, who explained, "The content of Manhunt 2 and the unique physical interaction with the Wii control combine to take [the game's simulation] a level closer to reality--we can expect that the effects of this experience will be even greater."

The group directed like-minded individuals to contact ESRB president Patricia Vance with their concerns, and Vance today issued her response.

"We have received the letter from CCFC and, while we might take issue with some of the statements made within, we sincerely appreciate their expressed concerns," Vance said. "Our ratings are intended to provide guidance that allows parents to choose games they deem suitable for their children, and that is a responsibility we take extremely seriously."

Manhunt 2 is currently slated for a July 10 release on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and Wii. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

it doesn't matter how bad a game is or good people react differently and most of the time its because it gets attention of being a sick and twisted game from the media but remember the most important thing its also the easiest point: ITS JUST A GAME! o ya and if you think that video games make these kids go kill people about every single time its because there already messed up in the head. Eventually all games will get worse now we need to stand up for something we believe in as did many others fought for a simple and thing: freedom of speech ya its little now because its legal anyone can do it if they want so why don't u let us that can buy/play the game do it if we want

its ridiculous making a game that will get banned most places. They should have toned it down... what did they think would happen?

If they're going to toss the word children around in their official statements, I think they should first consider that the average age of a video game player in the United States is 29, with the average buyer being of age 36! Hardly anybody who would play this game would be a child.

It's like a broken record with these child prevention characters. Making the game AO is a political move to keep it out of stores. If the game has an M for Mature rating it will not be sold to children, so their child safety premise isn't valid in the least. They don't want anybody buying this game, it has nothing to do with children. Shiny objects...

In other words, parents don't take responsibility for how they raise their child anymore and Videogames are the new media form to blame. I have one statement to make to those parents, grow the f*ck up.

ok right off the bat i am not some 13 year old kid with a desire to play adult games. now thats out of the way let me say this that an ao rating is uncalled for. an m rating would be fine with a bold set of type on the case stating that the game is not for children. wow problem solved if you buy this game for your kids now your just a retard

I knew that AO rating was in existence. I didn't think that it would be used for a game.

So then why not go all the way - since it's got an AO - and include a proper hardcore sex game etc. with next-gen graphics etc. The way i see it, these lot are not sure what they want to produce... I've had the chance to sample the hidden sex game on grand theft auto and i can tell you it doesn't do justice on either side of the argument.... Apart from a lot of controversy and plenty of headlines, probably good for business and publicity anyway. Larry sucked and didn't do justice for - again - either side... I say if you're going to get an AO and a ban (here in the UK) then you might as well try to include 'everything' and try and target a given audience rather then trying to please both sides of the spectrum and not delivering on any. Still, we'll wait to hear how this plays out.

I am not surprised by the rating this game got considering they changed there regulation on how to judge games. They would just play a portion of the game before and now they have to play the game all the way through to decide what kind of rating the game will get.

I think Rockstar knows what they are doing with the whole "rating situation". They know that in the long run, the game may not be as widely (or critically) excepted by people, so they are depending on the game to be a cult classic, as opposed to their more popular franchises (Grand Theft Auto, Max Payne, etc.)

I can't see this game selling all that well now. Not with it being banned in the UK and that is AO in America. It might just make Take-Two some profit.

Just to teach the "underage" kids that want to play this so badly a lesson, they should put them in a dark soundproof room have them play it and then see how badly they want the game.

Rightly so. Period. Frankly, I wouldn't encourage adults to play Manhunt, but then again they have rights ;) I have a feeling that a lot of the guys bratting on here are kids angry that their parents won't let them buy Manhunt 2 now that it's been rated seriously unsuitable. Wait...isn't that good parenting? Not exposing your children to disturbing amounts of violence? I love the way teenagers view adulthood - constatntly blabbering about 'responsable parenting et cetera'. From what I understand, bringing your child up to be a decent civilian whilst allowing them to play sadistic video games is tricky. It's best that Manhunt 2 stays out of the hands of kiddies.

Not that I'm supporting R* or the rating, but I think that the parents that argue so much about M rated games and up are the ones that spoil their kids and get them every video game. "Honey, I'm gonna go out and argue so you can play this game!"

Do parent watchdog groups realize that they can just not buy the game for their kids in the first place or that kids are not allowed to buy M games in most places?

AO games don't sell? Really? How do they know? Maybe the reason most AO games haven't sold is because they've been stupid crap like the new Leisure Suit Larry. Who knows if GTA:SA would have taken a sales slump due to being rerated AO. Rockstar freaked out and changed the game before any real sales data could be collected. The people that are gonna be Manhunt 2 are most likely going to be adults (even if it gets an M rating, then only those 17+ should be playing it). As a 26 yr/o gamer, I hope we start to get more AO games. Serious AO games, not porno games. With a title like Manhunt2, considering who should be its intended audience, an AO rating shouldn't be that big of a deal.

I think people are missing the point why the BBFC has rejected this game. Its because its non-stop violence with no justification or yin to its yang. Like watching a sadistic horror movie where all the characters die horribly and the baddy laughs at us as the movie ends. Where's the 'up' to that? The justification? A respite from bleakness...if only for a moment? The only people interested in this are people that WANT to be controversial, that NEED to boast to their friends 'hey I played the most sadistic game ever aren't I great? Aren't I bad?'. Don't get me wrong, I loved Condemned/GTA series, but this game is just violence for violence sake, which in the end is just silly and a cheap gimmic to give people a boasting aid. Think about it....Murder Simulation. How daft an idea is that?

Underage gamers who have no parenting experience whatsoever really have no bearing on this issue. It's like a druggie telling the cops they have no business asking about his meth lab. The whole "parents being more responsible" thing only works so much. Some parents are as responsible as they come, but have no knowledge about video games, and that's why the ratings are what they are. There's no possible way I would let one of my kids play the original Manhunt, even though it's a great game. Excuse me for not wanting my kids to be exposed to a pig-headed freak with his junk hanging out. That game was only rated M, and I know about video games, so I'm able to say "this game's not for my kid". Other parents aren't as cultured in the video game environment as I am, so they could use the help.

Anyone saying that the AO rating is fine doesn't understand how this industry works.. This game will NOT be released in its AO form...Take-Two is already in financial trouble...Releasing an AO rated game is retail suicide. Why do you think R* rereleased GTA after Hot Coffee? Dang that sucks that the game will be toned down in violence.... :-(

This has showed me another difference between the Wii and the other consoles. I agree with the AO rating for the Wii but not for the other consoles. The reason is for the motion sensing. IMO there will be a difference if the kid plays the game on the PS or Wii because of the interaction with the controller. I'm not the type of guy that wants the stores or the game companies to police kids, but thats how most "ignorant" parents are.

I wouldn't be too upset with the AO rating. Sure it won't be in Wal-mart or other "Family Friendly" stores, but it will still be available. And this game has been getting so much good press about gameplay, that this may be the AO game that does sell well and finally show the industry that selling an AO game can be profitable and a viable option. Sure it will loose sales but it will probably loose sales to those ignorant parents who just grab their kids anything while their shopping at Wal-mart. And in a way I'd have to agree with that. If it's AO I'll buy it just to support an AO game.

I've always been against excessive ratings for games (AO for gta was ridiculous...geez, I think 'M' for HALO is ridiculous), but I gotta say I kinda agree with this one. Manhunt is pretty twisted and it's really a game you want to make sure parents know their kids are getting...especially with the Wii where you're actually acting out some pretty violent stuff. There's still tons of places (EB & Gamestop, most noteably) who sell AO games, and since AO games are the only ones most retailers have any qualms about selling to minors, I regretably gotta side with this rating. I may give it a try, but if I had kids I sure wouldn't want them playing it, at least not until I had an opportunity to try it myself and see what it's like.

AO might not be the rating everyone wants but it's the one that the game deserves. At least on the positive side if they go with AO then we shouldn't see any parents suing Take Two due to the fact that no child should ever come in contact with this game.

Well, an AO rating would certainly kill sales, I agree with some sort of warning label on this game. While I doubt this game will be very good, I hope this and RE4 do well on the Wii so good third-party developers continue to support the Wii.

This is very understandable. Just think what you will be doing in the game. Definitely not suitable for those who are not adults yet. Though having a rating like this will be a huge loss for Take Two.

If the game warrants such a rating then that is what it should get. Might make me actually consider getting a Wii. Though I think that we will still see some compliant about the game when it is released and some how a kid gets his hands on one. Then blame Take Two for making such a game instead of blaming irresponsible parents. If parents weren't so passive about actually doing some "parenting" then things like these wouldn't be that important. I actually wouldn't mind if rules got a little bit more stricter upon purchasing games like this.... maybe a signature at the time of purchase accepting that you have just purchased a M or AO rated game.

This pisses me off. "The children" getting their hands on violent games is not the fault of the game developer nor the game itself. It's primarily the parent's fault, with any retailers that break the ESRB guidelines a close second. This isn't hard to understand. Why don't these childrens groups spend their energy dealing with the REAL problem and help find ways to educate parents on how to be parents? Why don't they advocate stricter penalties for retailers that don't adhere to the ESRB guidelines? Why don't the parents care enough about their children to act like parents? Why do the parents allow the TV to be their children's primary guardian? Why don't the parents care enough to educate themselves about the entertainment they provide to their children? All the people that advocate censorship instead of dealing with the REAL problems are short-sighted sheeple and make me sick. I'd love to lock you all in a room with Ted Nugent for a little reprogramming.
