Manhunt 2 receives AO rating

ESRB tags Rockstar sequel with Adults Only initial rating; Take-Two now exploring its options.

Earlier today, the British Board of Film Classification gave Manhunt 2 a thumbs down, banning it from sale in the UK due to its "unremitting bleakness" and "casual sadism." Now it appears the Entertainment Software Rating Board is ready to hand down its own most restrictive rating to the latest controversial offering from Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games.

A Take-Two representative told GameSpot today that the ESRB has issued an initial rating of AO for Adults Only to Manhunt 2. While not an outright ban, the rating would severely limit a game's sales potential, as most major American retailers have chosen not to carry games rated AO.

As for the reason this is only an "initial" rating, when the ESRB rates a game, it notifies the publisher 30 days prior to publicly releasing its decision. This gives publishers unhappy with ratings the chance to either modify their games and resubmit them for a second assessment, or go before the ESRB's appeals board to challenge it directly.

"We believe the process of rating video games is to help people make informed entertainment choices and not to limit them," a Take-Two representative said. "Manhunt 2 was created for mature audiences and we strongly believe it should receive an M (Mature) rating, aligning it with similar content created in other forms of media. We are exploring our options with regard to the rating of Manhunt 2."

While Take-Two doesn't agree with the idea of an AO-rated Manhunt 2, one parent watchdog group believes it's only appropriate. Earlier today, Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood demanded that the ESRB give Manhunt 2 an AO rating, saying that "harmful effects of ultra-violent video games on children will be magnified by playing them on the interactive Nintendo Wii system."

The group's announcement contained a statement from Dr. Michael Rich, director of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children's Hospital Boston, who explained, "The content of Manhunt 2 and the unique physical interaction with the Wii control combine to take [the game's simulation] a level closer to reality--we can expect that the effects of this experience will be even greater."

The group directed like-minded individuals to contact ESRB president Patricia Vance with their concerns, and Vance today issued her response.

"We have received the letter from CCFC and, while we might take issue with some of the statements made within, we sincerely appreciate their expressed concerns," Vance said. "Our ratings are intended to provide guidance that allows parents to choose games they deem suitable for their children, and that is a responsibility we take extremely seriously."

Manhunt 2 is currently slated for a July 10 release on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and Wii. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

*sigh*... its reasons like these im sorta glad not to be living in America, No offense to the rest of you but where i come from, Free speech is literally free. U can find porn in the same isle as kid's toys in my town. And an AO rated game is virtually nothing here. And i agree with evryone who said it. THe videogame industry is Unfairly scrutinized because nobody undertaands it. All the politicians and the parents dont get it because they didnt grow up playing them. However, i personally think thats its because the industry is still very young, its only just begininng to go mainstream. In about 7 - 10 years, when our current generation becomes the parents and politicians, the game industry will be allowed to grow because We are the generation that grew up playing these games and loved it.... Just my thoughts.

To be honest I think that when they rate a game "AO" they mean only Adults should play it. But for GOW sake, it's like ultra 17+ but if parents have a problem with it WHY BUY IT! Ban it using the parental controls, no need to limit this companys profit JUST because the game is intended for mature audiences.

This whole thing barely makes any sense to begin with. M rated games are supposedly for 17 and older, and AO games are for 18 and older. Must be an important year in a persons life... lol I still don't understand though how someone can go into Wal Mart and buy beer, cigarettes, and a copy of hostel, but for some reason they can't buy games for adults.

Parents today are retarded. I remember my parents teaching me what was right and what was wrong. If they saw something bad on the TV or on my video games, they would still let me watch it, but teach me what was wrong about what I saw. They didn't jump up and start trying to ban it. There are going to be way too many sheltered kids if this keeps up. Parents have to do more parenting, like mine did, instead of blamming and depending on the main stream media companies.

It's interesting to note how the CCFC singles out the Wii's control scheme, as though waving one's arm about with a lump of plastic in hand is any more accurate a simulation of physically committing violent acts against other human beings than tapping buttons and manipulating analog sticks on a standard controller. How about a little personal responsibility for a change: regulate the entertainment your children consume rather than splitting hairs over the means by which they interact with the objectionable content. For all the good intentions these people purport to have, little can be said of their judgment when they remain so utterly out of touch with the medium they seek to control. Parents need to stop seeking justification for their refusal to accept accountability for what their children are exposed to, and start making the necessary changes at home.

"Harmful effects of ultra-violent video games on children will be magnified by playing them on the interactive Nintendo Wii system." Listen to that! - a game that is created with ONLY MATURE players in mind will be played by CHILDREN? Do these guys from CCFC know what they are talking about? Coz' I'm not so sure. I thought that if a game is MADE for adults it's PLAYED by adults. Someone here is still in the neolithic stage. I'll repeat this only once - GAMES ARE MADE FOR EVERYONE; THEY ARE NOT ONLY FOR CHILDREN. It always makes me wonder why some people still think that gaming is childish and, based on this stupid stereotype, don't understand that there can be also games for adults :/

This is **** why must videogames undergo so much more criticism than movies or other forms of media. If Manhunt 2 was a movie it would be R, no doubt, but no, it's not, it's a game, AO...my ass.

@gamzrsweet: The AO rating is equivalent to an NC-17 or X rating on a movie, while M is the same as R. I agree the one year thing is weird but they have to choose an age to start it at. Anyway, if Saw is rated R how is this rated AO???

What are parents doing letting little Billy play Manhunt 2 on the Wii? I mean, for God's Sake, look at the damn cover! Does that scream, "Little Kids, Please Play Me!" ? AO is effectively a Ban on the game, they should just remove it and say that our "Morality Police" cannot allow you to publish this game to sheeple of the world. About the only platform a AO game can be played on is the PC/Mac. But you know, I'll go back to my Pornography and Saw/Hostel DVDs on my consoles. WE all know that non-interactive film is harmless to peoples minds! *rolls Eyes*

This game is banned from the US to... i say this because Sony nor Nintendo allows AO rated games on their system... (Proof) "The controversial PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, and Nintendo Wii title was then issued an AO for Adults Only rating in the US, effectively extending the ban to domestic shores, as neither Sony nor Nintendo allow AO-rated games on their systems." ....... so that pretty much says it all... NO Manhunt 2 for the US either... unless Take Two edits the game a bit or somehow finds a way persuade the ESRB into changeing the game to a M rating.

what the hell could an angry violent 8 year old kid do because of a game that their parents couldnt prevent in some way if little billy is running at you with a butterknife he's not really a menace to society even if the kid had some substancial weapon any level headed adult could simply intervene this just shows how many parents go to sleep with one eye open afraid of their own kids

You guyd keep talking like AO rating gets it banned. It doesn't (not here in the US anyways). Many retailers just refuse to sell AO rated games. So it will make it hard to purchase. Plus, this is a adult only game. So whats the problem?

i think manhunt 2 should just stick with a M (mature) rating because the first one was probly just as bad and parents shouldn't complain about there kids playing it on the Wii. Its the parents responsibility to pick the game for there child. They need to actually read the rating box to see the content of whats on there. People need to start taking responsibility for the own actions.

"I'm going to have to agree with the AO this time. Its not for kids at all neither was the first one " then what the heck is an M rating for, teenagers?? seriously, people need to take responsibility for themselves and their kids and stop running to the gov't every time they don't get their way.

Yaaah, a bunch of do-gooder, game crusaders get to decide which games i get to play as an adult. i'm so glad these people are around so i don't have to make decisions at all. apparently you can vote when you're 18, but you cant buy an awesome video game you want, because 10 year old kids can't be trusted to not let their parents buy it for them. thank you game-nazis.

I'm going to have to agree with the AO this time. Its not for kids at all neither was the first one but i think that the original got an M rating because these groups started demanding this kind of stuff more recently. And i can't really htink of a whole lot of like 9 through 12 year olds who would want to play this game a whole lot in first place, except maybe the kid across the street from my house hes a gun obbsessed lunatic but that comes from his parents and grandparents buying him guns and swords all the time. So its true that its parents faults for buying these games in the first place and if they're kid plays them its their fault but i think the game just got rated that for its content.

OK.. let me ask you people. If THIS game doesn't deserve an AO rating... what does? Most games... like Gears of War, get around the rating because you're shooting up aliens or some other hideous creatures. This one, I'm pretty sure you're mutilating humans. If you are 18... this ruling will not effect you at all. If younger than that, you don't need this anyway. Not only do I believe we need a system like this... we also need to finally pass some laws that will actually enforce it. If you sell to a minor, you get fined. Just like a liquor store. There are PLENTY of games out there to play until you become 18. Quit trying to grow up so fast. It'll happen way to soon anyway. BTW... this is written by an avid gamer who plays nearly every night.

"harmful effects of ultra-violent video games on children will be magnified by playing them on the interactive Nintendo Wii system." What ignorance.... I can see why they might believe this, but most people are preaching about things they don't understand. So they are saying that we're fine by pressing a button to kill someone, but if we put movement into it, it takes a whole new step. Most people know how to swing a knife, swinging a controller is not going to teach anyone anything new, and anyone who would murder to imitate manhunt is an idiot. So serial killers come from games now.... and this game really doesn't deserve an AO rating, simply because I doubt it will be any more graphic then the first one, and that M should be sufficient.

"chupamelpo" I mean at the age of 18 you’re ready to kill, by splatter people’s brains with an M-16 rifle, or to cut throats with a damn knife. By that time most of us will have an idea on how to use these weapons thru playing games like military shoot'em ups.

BOGUS!!!!!!!!! If the ESRB really care about the kids/teens, then they should really do something about the minimum recruiting age. I mean at the age of 18 you’re ready to kill, by splatter people’s brains with an M-16 rifle, or to cut throats with a damn knife. And yet we see tv ads all around about “be all that you can be”. this is ridiculous. if you don't want your kids playing violent games, maybe try NOT buying them M rated games. if you look on a game box and it says "M" for mature, its followed by ages 17 and up correct? So tell the next mom you see buying grand theft auto for her 10 year old son that it contains violence because it's rated M and its not even intended for 10 year old kids. Honestly people, this is like buying an underage kid alcoholic beverages, but complaining how there is alcohol in the drink. ffs people

"To Rockstar Games: How about a 360 version you backwater rejects???" Blown away to hear it, but MS does not allow AO games either, didnt know that was the case with Sony as well. Expect that from Nintendo, no tthe others. So NO console will let it be sold.
