Man Discovers George Lucas In Background Of Disney World Family Photo From 2005

A man is convinced that George Lucas photobomed a photo of his Disney family trip almost 20 years ago, and the internet believes he's right. Posting on Twitter/X, Mark Chase shared a photo of a family vacation to Disney World from 2005. This was shot on a traditional camera, and it wasn't until the family got their photos developed that they discovered a very famous-looking person in the background.

"We always used to joke that George Lucas was in the background of this photo," Chase said. "We never actually thought it was him."

But now, looking at the photos with fresh eyes, Chase and his family are convinced it actually was the creator of Star Wars and not a doppelganger. Then, the Chase family decided to do some digging, he told Newsweek. The family discovered that Lucas was, in fact, at Disney World on the day they were there on February 27, 2005. They found photos of Lucas from that day, and his attire--shoes, pants, belt and watch--all seem to match up.

"The discovery was pretty crazy," Chase, who was 11 years old at the time the photo was taken, told Newsweek. "The Internet seems to be running with it. They love a good mystery. Hopefully, the virality can get us some confirmation as to whether it really is him or not."

The social media post got a huge response. It picked up 50,000 likes and more than 5.5 million impressions, according to the social media site. The official Star Wars Twitter/X account responded to the tweet with the eyes emoji, for whatever that's worth.

If that was indeed Lucas in the background of the photo, it wouldn't be the first time he appeared on camera accidentally. Years ago, he seemingly stumbled into frame in a documentary filming on the street.

Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney in 2012 for $4.05 billion. He later reflected on the sale, saying it was difficult for him but ultimately the right thing to do, despite how he might have felt "betrayed" by Disney about how the deal went down.

After buying Star Wars, Disney released a new trilogy of movies and spin-offs. The franchise is now taking a rest before coming back with a new trilogy of films, including one that brings back Daisy Ridley as Rey.
