MAG Hands-On Impressions

We blast our way through Sony's ambitious online shooter.

The 256-player online shooter originally announced as MAG: Massive Action Game has since had its name trimmed of the cut-and-dry subtitle, but the scope of the game remains just as enormous as when news of its existence first broke at E3 2008. For Sony and developer Zipper Interactive, the team behind the bulk of the SOCOM series, that means living up to some pretty lofty claims. After visiting Zipper's Redmond, Washington studio last week for a chance to meet with staff and go hands-on with MAG, it looks as though they're well on their way to living up to those promises.

As you'd certainly expect, MAG has proven to be an ambitious undertaking for Zipper and Sony. Not only have they elected to build a new game engine from scratch, but they've also had to design a network infrastructure that will be key to making sure that these giant matches run smoothly. Zipper and its partners have been working for the past few years on this brand-new server system, culminating in full-capacity testing beginning in late 2008. Since then, it's been a balancing act of keeping smooth visuals that run at a minimum of 30 frames per second while maintaining a serviceable connection for all players. With the framework in place, next on the agenda is a public multiplayer beta, which several Zipper employees told us is a necessity to test their system under real-world conditions.

Although the tech behind MAG is breaking all-new ground, the game's setting sticks a bit more closely to first-person shooter traditions. The game takes place 20 years in the future, in a time when world powers have begun relying much more heavily on the use of private military contractors to fight their battles--what Zipper refers to as a "shadow war" of PMCs against PMCs. That lays the foundation for the game's three factions: the sleek, high-tech Raven; the burly, camo-covered Valor; and SEVR, a group of ragtag fighters adorned in makeshift armor. Each has its own distinct look, from clothing to weaponry, as a way to help players tell friend from foe on the expansive battlefields.

Get ready for some pretty huge firefights.
Get ready for some pretty huge firefights.

To keep those battlefields from getting too chaotic, Zipper has organized each team in such a way that there are multiple layers of leadership to help guide you along. Each match has a pair of 128-man armies, which are divided into 32-man platoons and 8-man squads. You've got a leader at every one of those levels who's capable of dishing out to his subordinates orders that can expand on or differ from the overall team goal. These are called FRAGOs (fragmentary orders) and include objectives such as destroying gates or antiaircraft guns, or what have you. The penalty for disobeying your commanding officer? Nothing. But the benefit is drastically increased XP, which you'll use to unlock all manner of goodies in the game's focus on persistent leveling and rewards.

So what exactly does a 256-player match feel like in action? Sadly, we can't say. Our hands-on time with MAG was set on one of the 128-player maps, with closer to half of the maximum number of players actually playing, a decision that Zipper made for easier coordination among journalists and testers. But even at a fraction of the game's capacity, the match was impressive in scale. The map was huge, and between all of the distant gunfire, parachutes dotting the sky, and splinter battles, there was a lot going on.

The controls offer zippy movement and don't feel far off from the Call of Duty games. You can choose from a number of kits that all include a primary weapon, a pistol, a knife, grenades, and specialized gear such as a medic gun or repair tool. We tried a number of weapons, including an assault rifle, a submachine gun, a light machine gun, and a sniper rifle. With so many players, we didn't survive long with our original run-and-gun tactic; we had much better luck simply going prone with a sniper rifle and picking off parachuting enemies. (Call us dirty spawn campers if you like, but players are given a number of spawn location choices.) Overall, the core gameplay seems pretty accessible and straightforward. Most of the depth looks like it will come from teamwork and getting to know the ins and outs of each map.

Maps of varying sizes will be offered for when you can't get a full match going.
Maps of varying sizes will be offered for when you can't get a full match going.

We played a mode that challenges one team with sneaking into enemy territory and stealing a pair of heavily armored vehicles within a particular time limit. There was discernible flow to the action as one team pushed deeper into the other's side, though with the number of players out there, the fighting was divided into lots of little pockets. To help get a better feel for what's going on, you can pull up a slick overhead map that shows an isometric view of all buildings, and icons for enemies, vehicles, and points of interest.

If you were hoping for MAG to turn the fundamentals of the first-person shooter genre on its ear, you'll likely wind up disappointed. But if you were looking for a familiar approach to shooter gameplay on a ridiculously huge scale, you're in luck--it seems that's just where MAG is headed. We had a fun time with it, but we're eager to experience a full-capacity match to see just how intense it will be. You can expect plenty more coverage on MAG leading up to its release in late 2009.

@catdadanddog: i would love to have a real massive action game i mean god imagine a war with more than 200 players fighting as samurais, archers i would die for that, it would be epic like an akira kurosawa movie but wtf people here prefer guns to swords and that's the end of it, but if they get action this big running smothlyi suppose it wont be long till some japanese dev creates one with swords and stuff

Ancient: You know the funny thing though? Those two-three people with mics, or even an entire squad that happens to have mics will absolutely dominate every other player in the game. It happens in every single large scale game, like Battlefield or Frontlines.

snake3rules: no i am afraid you are confused. with game coverage as thorough as it is today, previews must have the good and bad points of games. first of all, people always get pissed when they read these awesome sounding previews about a game and then when it comes out and sucks they are disappointed. if all a preview did was hype a game, every game would have huge expectations before it came out. take a game like too human that had huge expectations from the previews and then was a huge disappointment (to many people if not most at least). second, with people increasingly preordering games before they come out, if all people knew about was the positive things about a game, then many people would waste their money on games that they preordered because of the only positive previews. third, yes its a preview build and the fact the you know that is the exact reason why its okay to tell the disappointments in a preview build. you know that its not a complete game and gamespot counts on you realizing that. also you pointed out in your first comment that "disappointed" is mentioned in the review. that is taken completely out of context. they say that if you are looking for a game they revolutionizes the fps genre (in other words something new if your tired of fps or if you dont like previous fps games), you are probably not gonna like this game. while the scope of this game is quite amazing, its likely that in the end it will be a game for people that really like fps games. as for me, i judge games based on the review, not the score or the previews. the review provides the good and bad points and i use those to decide which games i think will be worth my money. also you say that negativity in previews drives people away from games. first of all, who cares! if you like the game that is all that matters. second, look at all the comments. the vast majority of comments are people really excited about the game. thats because they see a preview that only has half a sentence of bad points. people take that to mean that the game is really good with only a very small bad point (which as a pointed out earlier is not really a bad point its just a disclaimer that people looking for something revolutionary from an fps will PROBABLY be disappointed). and again, i reiterate, if you dont like gamespot, LEAVE! no one makes you come to this site. even more important, if you and others that may feel the same as you leave, then gamespot will eventually start losing money and be forced to change their practices or cease to exist.

Also, why can't we just get Counter-Strike 2? I don't know if 256 players would be tactful considering the tactical background of CS but i could definitely see 64 or so. Come on CS2!

It's a good idea to have 16 Platoon squads each with different commanders like the real deal... the concept of this game is sick. Looks good.

While I don't own a PS3 (its cost ratio thing for me - saving up enough money for a PS3 isn't worth it for me since I don't have steady income, being that I'm a college student. For the cost of a PS3, I can buy 5 or more 360 games that I want to play, while the PS3 only has 6 games, including MAG, that I want to play right now) I still have to say - wow. 256 people, while still looking this good, and with good gameplay concepts. I definitely get this if I could. As it stands, good on ya Zipper. Now if only any system was strong enough to support the game using something like, say, GeoMod 2 or DMM for enviromental interaction in addition to all this, I'd probably never play anything else ever. Then again, that would probably break even the most powerful of gaming PCs.

P.S. PLEEEAASE tell me this won't be subscription based. That would kill this game. Fine if they charge for *substantial* DLC, but just to play it would be terrible and eliminate one of the key advantages of PSN over its competitors.

I am excited about this game. Because this will be a great game because zipper is on it, plus this will force other games i play to step their game up... I am dyinggggggg for Counter-Strike to be available via PS3... DYING! Counter-Strike is my fav FPS ever! Socom my fav 3PS Ever! Both tactical, both realistic. CS had a bad wrap for the xbox portal... Im ok with that bc i dont care for XB anyways, plus i was still rocking the newest version of it on my PC [at the time, xb had the old CS] With a MASSIVE game like MAG, I know this will be a hit, PS3 doesn't have a FPS-Tactical shooter... COD heads... please don't hate, COD is fun, but lets call a spade-a-spade... it's Arcade-Style! it can become tactical, IF you get the right ppl, mode, etc... CS was never arcadish unless u had a half-life mod. MAG will be the REAL FPS Tactical game. Zipper have great experience in making Tactical games... SOCOM says it all. It will be a hit... I am not worried about the tech that they are using. its going to be overkill for what we are using it for, and that's fine, because it will confirm that they are probably making something ELSE under all of this, lol I C U ZIPPER!

@ 3taG0 It's because that's how the server architecture is set up--to increase in powers of 2. It's why games have had 4, 8, 16, 32, and 64 player caps. In fact this affects all things digital; it's also the same reason flash memory cards are typically the same numbers--128 MB, 512 MB, etc.Even 8 GB memory cards are actually 8.192 GB Anyway, this game looks incredibly epic! I hope it lives up to the hype cuz it should be awesome and truly feel like an online war. Sweet.

well,if the gameplay suck,i dont care about this game having 256 players, the dedicated servers at frontlines suported 50 players online on xbox360,with huge maps like solar farm, but the gameplay wasnt that good, there was almost no team work at all, even with the game helping on that side with the frontlines to conquer.unless this one have more than 2 factions and objectives to force team work,or it will fail.

Personally, I foresee amazing achievements, they just ensure that they play their cards right, and it will be an amazing multiplayer experience. But, I get the feeling that such a large scale combat idea would work better if the game was mostly melee [Like older wars(Although, mind you I still think this will be impressive, and will be more unique with gunplay, and due to limitations of certain technologies from the eras where melee was primarily used, this in a way adds more strategy and depth to the gameplay)] I can't wait. (I also wonder what details they will release at E3... I can't wait for E3 either.)

AncientDozer, not a single game in history has ever seen "Hundreds of thousands of games" going on at any single moment. Never. Also, there will be teamwork. This won't be like resistance 2 where its just a jumbo mess of players everywhere. Since there are 256 people and the maps are huge, i'm quite sure they set up individual spots for different squads.

Well it's a step in the right direction to move away from you standard 16 to 32 player standard multiplayer games. Which self respecting gamer doesn't see a challenge in being confronted by large numbers of their fellow gamers? I am worried that eventually everyone will go their own separate ways in stead of truly behaving like a squad. Also, let's hope that their focus on large scale online battles do not come to the expense of the gameplay. Very nice concept though, so i will give this one a shot.

About the graphics from the trailers, They're not even in beta stage of graphics, in the interview they said they're done designing it, and now they've started polishing it. So I wouldn't even want to see gameplay footage at this point. I wouldn't want to try a thanksgiving turkey half-baked. And about being PS3-exclusive, On one side of the coin, I am saddened that such a good game will only be released on one console (More money for them if they released it for multiple platforms [although it would be more expensive to work with more consoles, so I guess it would sorta balance out, but still that would make it more work for the developers]{And I bet you can tell that I own a 360 *points at profile picture*}.) But on the other side, this completely raises the bar for a 360-exclusive game, so perhaps within a year or two, xbox could come out with an exclusive that's even better than this game. But the only weakness to that last statement is that this game took what, around 4 years, encounting? I don't think anything the 360 could rush into production within a year or even two could match up to 256 players, including the robust gameplay mechanics and everything, UNLESS they somehow pay Zipper enough money to use the engine that this game is using, and I don't really see that happening anytime soon.

Why is everyone freaking out about lag and saying it can't work? Novalogic made Joint Operations in 2004 and that was 164 players. I'm sure 5 years later, maybe even 6 depending on when this comes out, a company can work with 256 players. Also if it is anything similar to Joint Operations it really won't be that hectic. I'm guessing most people can't imagine maps too much larger than the ones in Gears of War and Halo.

Good idea. I would have like to see them not shoot for the moon first. Start with a smaller scaled game, like 64 players or something. I think you'll find most people playing with smaller maps. Only large groups of friends will try to play 128 vs. 128. There's nothing more annoying that then asking some guy to watch your back, and he runs off commando style. That crap happens on 8 vs. 8 in COD all the time. Not saying it's not possible, but I can't see the majority of 128 people working together. Given that they built a dedicated server architecture for this, and they will likely need to monitor that are a regular basis, it will be pay to play.

It's not gonna work. It is be impossible to control sooooo many players on publics. It's gonna be complete mess and everyone will be playing on his own. Only cooperation in a clan with people who we know could use the potential of this game. But not everyone has time to play in a clan... For normal players it won't be interesting.

Don't worry about lag. Zipper and its partners have been building a dedicated server architecture specifically to support the game, and they've been doing it for the past 4 years. Aside from that, the servers themselves make intelligent decisions to trim the fat off the information that reaches your console, to maximize the bandwidth. If there is lag, the first place you're going to have to check is on your end of the connection. On the spawn camping issue, the attacking teams spawn points scatter platoons to the North, South, East and West near the map edges. Then there is the defending teams spawn points, most likely in the center of the map, or wherever the objectives are. Unless a team really wants to send someone all the way out of the action to sit on someone's spawn points, I don't think that's going to be a major issue. Spawn points generate further and further in as you reach certain checkpoints on the map, meaning that if someone is camping, they're going to be sitting their lonely after a few cheesy kills. Once you break through outer defenses, then you get forward spawn points that are closer to the action, but you have to work together to get your squad close enough, otherwise, your advance will grind to a halt. @five01st I agree it could be very chaotic, and you're going to have some teams working better with others than some will, and some won't want to team up at all, but the way this is shaping up, those that go solo are going to get fragged that way a lot. The thing is, sometimes the people that don't want to pull together are going to be the cannon-fodder of war. They'll either be constantly getting sniped, blown up or riddled with bullets until they figure out the game is about strength in coordinated numbers. Your squad leaders on up are going to be veteran level players as well. This is all straight out of GI, paraphrased. They also have to apply to the leadership tree, they're not just accepted and thrown in there. So let's hope this weeds out the dumb ones. It's the squad leaders that plot the way-points and call in UAV's, for example. You can't help the people that won't listen, but really, as long as there are way points to get to, even the rogues become useful if they at least follow their GPS. Of course, that's also presuming that the veteran you're working with isn't an idiot on top of all that, heh. But chaos? It's a war-zone. What else would you expect? I don't think the chaos will be over-riding, but that remains to be seen. @smghottie What has Zipper ever made?? Are you f&^%'n serious?! Really?? They're the developer behind SOCOM... I, II, and III. SOCOM Navy Seals... SOCOM Combined Assault... Come on, just some of the better tactical squad based FPS's to come out in the last decade. But they've made something. Indeed. They're arguably one of the best developers for a franchise effort of this magnitude.
