Mafia 3 Confirmed, Full Reveal Coming Next Week

2K finally officially announces the long-rumored project; get the first details here.

Following years of rumors, 2K Games on Tuesday officially announced Mafia III.

An image released on Twitter teases the location and time period for Mafia 3, though 2K has yet to confirm the information. We also see four people backlit by headlights in cars.

No information was provided regarding platforms, but the game's website reveals the newly formed Hangar 13 to be the developer. Mafia II was developed by 2K Czech. Haden Blackman, who worked at LucasArts in the 1990s and 2000s, is leading the team at Hangar 13.

"Mafia III is the next installment in the popular series known for immersing players into a world of organized crime through rich narrative storytelling and a beautifully crafted game world featuring period-accurate cars, music, and fashion," 2K said in a statement.

More information about Mafia will be announced during Gamescom in August, beginning with a reveal trailer on August 5 at 5 AM PDT / 8 AM EDT. GameSpot will be on the ground at the German gaming event to bring you all the news as it happens.

No Caption Provided

Today's official announcement of Mafia 3 comes after years of rumors and speculation about it. In March 2012, it was reported that Mafia II developer 2K Czech working on a third entry in the series. At the time, the studio had supposedly entered full development on Mafia 3 following a year of pre-production work.

Later that year, another report said Mafia 3 was in development at 2K Czech for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and was going to be a launch title for those platforms. However, the game reportedly suffered from production issues, and those plans were apparently abandoned.

More recently, in January 2015, voice actor Rick Pasqualone, who played Mafia 2 protagonist Vito Scaletta, teased that a new Mafia game may be announced soon.

"Might have some Mafia news very soon," he said on Twitter at the time. To another, who bluntly said, "make Mafia 3," Pasqualone replied: "Might have some exciting news very soon."

2K Games parent company Take-Two Interactive said in March 2013 that it had an "extensive pipeline" of unannounced games in development.

the cars in the screenshots look more modern, maybe 1960-70ish... thank god for that cause i really didn't want to be stuck driving the clunky 1940 cars again like you did at the start of the second game.

It was especially painful in the first game, sputtering around just to get to the damn eternal loading screens

Hello, please, enter the game in the management part ... racketeering, extortion, and drug! We want to be the boss ... we want to decide and direct us, our family !! The Mafia is charismatic ... more brutal that of Mafia II! consult the history of the Italian Mafia to make Mafia III!

@flappy188:

Wow what a complete pr*ck!

Even if you are right in telling people to get the new systems, which you are NOT, insulting those people who haven't yet is the work of a complete w*nker.

Not only that but you used the word "Gay," As derogatory, proving that on top of being a pr*ck and a w*nker, you are also a homophobic C*NT as well.

make the 3 with some true mob mentality thats the best mafia game for any true mafia fanatic. let us really feel the beggining and end of the mob. almost like how goofellas was but with yous guy's own story of course. But to make a long story short i really want to feel like im a true wise guy who started young and innocent to growing up in the old italy sreets of new york. Also the cinematics like on gta is the most important. To let us watch the true coversations of the mob and how it ran in the era of the time you guys have it.

The only downside to Mafia II was that the world felt barren and there weren't many side missions. Hope they fix this in Mafia III.

Please add some side missions. Mafia 2 was brilliant, but there were no side missions to help with the replayability.

Exactly what I liked best about the Mafia 2 gameworld - a living breathing city as a backdrop to great chapters, missions, gameplay, and story. I don't have enough time on my hands these days to have a million things to do in an open world game. It was a tight gaming experience. Leave the sandbox gameplay for games like Skyrim and GTA.

you guys have no idea how much i love games like this. i remember when I bought Mafia II for Xbox 360 and i liked it because it hard stealth, combat, crimes, drug lords, kingpins, but most what i really loved is the stealth. maybe in Mafia III, you guys could have the protagonist do side jobs for other people and then have main missions.. i mean like, you can free roam, do what you want, go into houses, mansions, hotels, etc and steal stuff and if anybody needs a helping hand, you can choose to help him/her with that job while not worrying that your main missions will fail because to me, it's like Grand Theft Auto, an open world to explore..... i really hope that this comes out for Playstation 4 and other console as well because I ABSOLUTELY 100% do love a good crime game....

since we are on the subject of Mafia III, why did Electronic Arts discontinue the Godfather Games... i mean they made The Godfather and The Godfather II but after that, they stopped. In my opinion Godfather III would have Dominic getting married and having kids of his own and like somewhere along the lines, Dominic get thrown into prison because he was framed for killing his wife and then Dominic's one kid, now a young good looking man like his father gets into the actions with a whole new world of crime, kingpins, drug lords, and many many of main missions and side missions. let's say someone needed you help to fix their car, or whatever, you can choose to do that because your main missions won't flunk out if you don't do them right away. time from time, there are going to be missions that are set in prison like for one mission. you could have Dominic find a way out of his cell and kill off the warden. just a suggestion...

mafia 2 was tiny, nothing like a 50's 60's Gta, there weren't hundreds of collectibles, there weren't hundreds of side mission, hundreds of side missions, several dozen unique cars, it gave you an impression of open world but it was a carefully guided 12 hour story, i was so disappointed at the 70$ after tax purchase, especially after having just played Gta 4 previously

next why are both those paragraphs in bold, and ever instance of you saying Dominic in italics?

do you see yourself having a more opinion emphasized over the regular Gamespot user, you even took to even underlyning the "absolutely 100%", a little over kill equality among people.

@nimqua420: You have that experience with the GTA games, why does it need to be the same in a Mafia game from a different decade? You need HUNDREDS of collectibles? You said hundreds of side missions twice. Jeez.

your gunna critisize that little thing,
i want the tone and setting of a mafia game which gta isn't, the game was advertized to be a great open world adventure and i was done everything in a day and a half, not everything, but for collectibles im talking gta sa size amounts, rhat unlock weapons or cars, gta has an absurd sense of humour, mafia can be serious but huge plus musically they are in one of the best eras ever

I don't normally pre-order games. The only games I've ever pre-ordered are those that left such a big impression on me based on past record or via other information sources that it compelled me to.

They are: Mafia 2, Diablo 3, GTA V, Just Cause 3, Sherlock Holmes game

Given this news, I will definitely preorder Mafia 3.

Awesome. I really liked the second entry in the series. Wasn't a huge fan of the first due to just a couple of mind-blowingly annoying mechanics, but I'm sure it won't be like that anymore.

Really hope they keep the strong focus on story and leave the open world fluff to other franchises. My brain tells me they will do the exact opposite though lol.

Mafia 2 was good, but then I went to GTA4 and couldn't help but see the difference in quality. Hopefully Mafia 2's budget and talent has improved, because the ideas were rich with possibilities.

@agy83: Eh, sounds like The Sims. I'm not sure the ultra-violent mixes well with the ultra-mundane... different games for different moods! It'd be like playing Euro Truck 2 and expecting you can go into corner stores and buy a chocolate bar... then murder the shop keep and steal his pickup truck and go on a police chase...

I'm all for more realistic vehicle deformation though, anything physics-based in a game gets me excited!

@agy83: No it does sound like Sims, Rust or some surival game. GTA/MAFIA do not need RPG elements to make them good. Open Exploration is always welcome however these are Arcade games, not inteded to be realistic.

The day they will add hunger and alike is the day the franchise will become shit. This is not an opinion this is a well profound fact. If you don't believe me, make a Poll.
