Mad Max director George Miller has teased the upcoming Mad Max spinoff Furiosa, saying its story will take place over "many years" unlike the relatively contained story in Fury Road. At an event in Sydney announcing that Furiosa will film in New South Wales beginning in 2022, Miller said Furios will be a "saga."

Whereas Fury Road's story takes place over three days and two nights, Furiosa's story will be much bigger in scope. "This is a saga; it happens over many years, so there's a lot of different elements to it. But that's all I should say," he said.

"This will be familiar to those people who know Mad Max, and in particular Fury Road, but also it will be unique," he said, as reported by The Sydney Morning Herald.

Furiosa is a prequel to Fury Road, featuring The Queen's Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy as the younger version of the character played by Charlize Theron in the 2015 film.

Thor actor Chris Hemsworth, who was on hand for the announcement event as you can see in the video, will also star in the movie. Aquaman's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will also star.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said Furiosa will be the "largest film ever to be filmed" in the state. Its production is estimated to bring 850 jobs and generate $350 million or more into the NSW economy.

SMH reported that Furiosa will begin filming in 2022 after Miller finishes post-production on his latest film, Three Thousand Years of Longing, which stars Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton.

According to the report, Miller wanted to film a "key sequence" for Furiosa before June 30 but this will no longer happen. "We had vehicles built, stunts prepared, and we were well into that process," Miller said.

The director also addressed the new era of streaming. He said Furiosa's story is being designed for the big screen. "This is a story that I can't wait to see in a cinema," he said.

Furiosa, like Fury Road before it, is in production at Warner Bros., whose 2021 movies are releasing simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters.

Fury Road made more than $376 million at the global box office. It was the first new entry in the series at the time since 1985's Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome.
