In an announcement today, Lucasfilm clarified its approach to the Star Wars canon as we approach the launch of the next trilogy of films. The stories told in the Expanded Universe--which consists of games, books, comics, and so on--has always been considered non-canon, distinguishing it from the main content found in the six movies and the animated Clone Wars series. While elements of the EU have found their way into the main series, series creator George Lucas has made it clear in the past that his works would not be stuck abiding by anything in the EU.

Now, in the wake of The Walt Disney Company's acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, changes are being made. With the help of a new story group that will oversee "all Star Wars creative development," today's announcement states that "all aspects of Star Wars storytelling moving forward will be connected."

No Caption Provided

That means that all Star Wars media released in the future will be part of the official canon, which will continue to disregard anything in the existing EU. New novels from Del Rey Books, as well as the upcoming Star Wars Rebels TV animated series, will be among the first releases to tell new canonical stories. "While the universe that readers knew is changing, it is not being discarded. Creators of new Star Wars entertainment have full access to the rich content of the Expanded Universe."

A Lucasfilm representative confirmed to GameSpot that future game releases will also be canonical. This includes DICE's Battlefront and Visceral's new Star Wars game being written by former Naughty Dog creative director Amy Hennig and Uncharted actor Todd Stashwick. Both games are being published by Electronic Arts, which signed a multiyear deal to produce Star Wars video games in 2013.

The recent delay of the latest expansion for another EA title, Star Wars: The Old Republic, is unrelated to today's announcement. The Lucasfilm rep told GameSpot, "[A]s far as The Old Republic MMO is concerned, nothing is going to change. [TOR] has always been a part of the Expanded Universe, and that's not going to change."

What do you make of these changes to the franchise? Are there any parts of the Expanded Universe you wish were considered canon? Let us know in the comments.

Canon, canon, canon, canonical, canon, canon!?!?

Almost everyday lately, I am hearing this word being used. e.g. "This is considered canon now."

Can someone please tell me what the hell it means? It sounds dumb as hell, but it makes me feel even dumbererer, because I seem to be the only one asking what the hell does it mean!? ;)

At least before I could just look past it, but after reading this monstrosity of an article, I've no choice but to finally ask.

Is this article trying to be stupid here, are they playing some in-office game, to try and see how many times they can fit this word CANON into one story?

You do know M. Night Shamalamadingdong did that with The Happening movie too? Yeah it wasn't clever when he did it either.

@punksterdaddy I agree, they should have defined & explained it in the article. ( coming from someone who owns every single movie & game with the word star wars in it.-except jedi-knight)

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Yeah, if it's not canon it doesn't contradict anything that is considered "real" or an actual fact in this fictional world. Any fictional world that has many contributors and streches far and wide will have inconsistencies and the term canon is a tool to decrease them, by disregarding them as non-canon. There are loads of Frodo/Sam love story fan-fiction tales, but since none of them are canon, we can simply ignore them.

"In << LINK REMOVED >>, canon is the material accepted as "official" in a << LINK REMOVED >>. It is often contrasted with, or used as the basis for, works of << LINK REMOVED >>. The term "canon" can be used either as a noun, referring to "the original work from which the fan fiction author borrows,"<< LINK REMOVED >> or as an adjective to describe whether or not certain elements are accepted as authoritative parts of the fictional universe.<< LINK REMOVED >> Fan-fiction would be described as "non-canon," while an event from the official source material would be "canon." The alternative term mythology is often used, especially to refer to a richly detailed fictional canon requiring a large degree of << LINK REMOVED >> (e.g. an entire imaginary world and history)."

Ohhh....so that's what it means. WTF?!

Now they just need to "demote" the prequels to non-canonical status and we can put another "serious" first world problem to bed...j/k

If they just put Timothy Zahn in charge of everything, this wouldn't worry me as much. That won't happen, though. Soon, the cannon Star Wars universe will be far, far lamer than the expanded universe made by creative individuals over the last 35 years.

Please just redo and make KotoR canon, Bioware and EA. And by redo, I mean just give it some updated graphics and combat. Don't even dare touch that story.

I had to google the context definition of "canon". Seriously, who ever uses that word like this? Why not just say "faithful", "conventional", "traditional"? I guess we are playing Scrabble and that's all they had in their hand.

Oh great, thank you very much. You've truly made my day. I was beginning to think I was the only one who was in the dark with this use of the word.

If only I hadn't posted my own ramblings before reading this, I wouldn't feel as foolish. Oh well, you live and learn.

Now if only the "Writer," of this gibberish nonsense could use a thesaurus or google, then the world would be a better place for all. ;)

Oh wait, he has Karl Pilkington as his avatar, forget what I said... GENIUS!

It is a very well known and highly used word in the anime's 'world'.... and maybe in the comics's world too.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Not gonna lie buddy, I'm 30 and as a comics and Star Wars fan, canon is a term we've always used a lot and usually when it has something to do with SW. Like when a book or comic comes out, the first thing we ask is if it's canon.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The use of the word stems back to the Biblical Canon where the authoritative/main line of the Bible was constructed (books not included became known as the Apocrypha).

And as you stated it's a highly known word now used to describe the authoritative documents of a line of history or in this case the history of a fictional world.

I'm really hoping that they DON'T make a Force Unleashed 3 then. Force Unleashed 2's story was just so bad and shouldn't even be considered Star Wars.

Force Unleashed 1 was excellent though.

"TOR has always been a part of the EU, and that's not going to change." Wait so does that mean it is or isn't canon? And at the very least I believe KOTOR 1 and 2 should be canon...or maybe just 1 lol. And what about The Force Unleashed 1? I mean yeah force powers aren't like that, but that can just be chalked up to it being a video game. The story of how the rebel alliance was formed was pretty good, at least in my opinion.

As a big Star Wars fan, I like this idea. Previously some comic book, novel and video game stories contradict with each other and some others just goes aimlessly and ends. It's good to see they take all the stories of all the media very seriously to create one single canon instead just making something and sell it.

But it's not like they can remove all the fun we had when we read or play the past EU. It can be enjoyed back then, it can be enjoyed now.

Lucas had the right idea splitting up the canons. Frankly, Star Wars is such a vast setting that the idea of one single canon is almost ludicrous. And if Disney produces/licenses the same amount of content we've seen in the past, maintaining consistency will be basically impossible. Without consistency, a single canon is pointless.
