Legal Discussions Underway Over CM Punk's Inclusion in WWE 2K15

However, people connected to the matter assure disputes have not led to a lawsuit.

No Caption Provided

Legal representatives for pro-wrestler CM Punk are engaged with WWE officials to settle a range of disputes, including his possible removal in the upcoming game WWE 2K15, GameSpot can confirm. Sources connected to the matter explain that a variety of topics are being discussed with the former WWE champion, who famously departed from the company while under contract in January.

A range of outcomes could materialize from these talks, such as the removal of CM Punk from the game, or indeed his unlikely return to the company. Both matters are routinely speculated online, despite their contradiction with each other, and neither has been confirmed by WWE.

Despite CM Punk's retirement, publisher 2K Games recently used the wrestler's name as part of a promotion for its upcoming WWE 2K15 title. In fact, CM Punk's rivalry with fellow wrestler John Cena is being publicized as a flagship feature for the new title.

This is one of the matters under dispute, and talks between both teams will now determine whether CM Punk remains in the game, and what business agreement can be arranged between both parties.

However, GameSpot understands that--in contrast with widespread speculation--there is no "lawsuit" underway. At the time of going to press, both parties are negotiating a number of topics, which means that it is still possible that a dispute could be taken to a judge, but the matter has not progressed to that stage yet.

Spokespersons for 2K games and WWE declined to comment when approached by GameSpot.

It amazes me that despite the fact that CM Punk walked out on WWE and ignored the pleas of both Vince McMahon and his fans to come back people still chant his name at events and act like it was WWE that fired him. Now he is mad that he is still in the game despite the fact that it was developed while he was still under contract. Between paying Punk royalties and doing a day one patch to take him out of the game I would rather that they just patch him out. Although in all reality they would probably delay the game so they can remove him from the disc since people might just refuse to download the patch so they can play as him even if it meant they couldn't play online.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I logged in for the first time in like 7 years to reply to this. I do not understand people who say that no one should cheer for CM Punk because he 'walked out on the fans'. CM Punk became a household name in 2011 when he gave the 'pipe bomb' worked shoot promo that basically addressed all the frustrations of long terms fans, including myself, who weren't watching the product anymore. I sought out that promo as the first piece of WWE television I had watched since One Night Stand 2006 as TNA's overall product had been better. It was an Austin 3:16 moment and despite Triple H's efforts to halt how high he would go (losing to him on pay per view for no reason) and his eventual fall back into mediocrity on the Cena steam train backed by corporate office. Fast forward to Royal Rumble 2014, we were staring into the abyss of Batista (who was one of the reasons I stopped watching WWE television when he got a main event push in 2005) lifting the world title at Wrestlemania, a shitty feud between Kane and CM Punk and Daniel Bryan not even being in the Royal Rumble. It was a cluster **** that even Mick Foley said was bullshit. CM Punk walked out because the product despite his efforts sucked balls, and at this point it's still not great in the absence of Punk and Bryan. No one can blame Punk for walking out. He gave it his all for almost a decade and he didn't even main event a Wrestlemania while people just walked in, worked a few Raws and were world champs. Keep in mind they would have been getting paid more than him as well even though he is working 300 days a year. He doesn't need the money and he didn't like what they were doing with him so he walked. I think it's admirable.

It doesn't matter. When it releases and they start making money off of it, they will be violating his NIL rights since he's not under contract. Either they have to cut him in on the profit or remove him from the game. Simple as that.

I stop watching WWE ever since they buried Bray Wyatt the first time around, and broke up the Shield. TNA has been gaining more of my attention: more wrestling, better bookings, and no stupid crap like dancing bunnies.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I haven't watched TNA in a while. They were averaging about 28 minutes of actual wrestling per two hour show. From the reports I've read, they are even worse now and are close to going out of business. Is that not true?

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> It's not enough. Without a US television deal, they'd have to take the company out of the country in order to appease another fan base. The WWE has TV deals from other countries too, but it took the USA Network offering the WWE a minimal increase on their deal to take McMahon from being a billionaire to be 3/4 of a billionaire. It's the way it is.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Actually, WWE stock plummeted after the news that they fell way short of what they projected to get from their new USA contract. I mean, it was announced that, instead of doubling, it only increased by 50% and the stock closed at just under $20 a share to opening the very next day under $11. He lost $350 million that day. Considering it was the only news to come out that day, that stock drop is directly related to that news.

Hell, the news that the WWE Network fell well short of expectations "only" lost him $325 million.

They'll either pay him the royalties he is due since he owns his characters rights or they will remove him from the game.

Why do I feel like this is an epic storyline to bring people into the drama, yet also market WWE 2k15, WWE, and CM Punk? Before the internet wrestling story lines were less transparent. Now with the internet, it would be great to utilize something like this as a "is this real?" Story while giving a wrestler time off.

The WWE has been using his character in other ventures too. CM Punk (dunno if its real voice) is also on a Slam City video I saw on Nintendo Video. I think in the end this discussion will branch out to more than just this game.

The funny thing is that the guy in the video is probably like 6 feet 3, yet he looks really small next to Big Show.

I don't get the whole CM Punk thing. I watched him when they first brought back ECW, and for a little while after he went on regular WWE programming (and then I stopped watching wrestling again, the matches got too tame).

He was just some boring straight-edged guy who always had boring and slow matches with absolutely no high-spots. He must have done something amazing in the years since, b/c back then he was a dud.

@ahmad996 The Wyatt Family should have been on the cover. But like usual they used great wrestlers as a catapult for Cena and ruined more good wrestlers for kids money. Look at what they did to Damien Sandow. Now he is a joke character.

Since Punk is a major part of the game--he's featured as one half of one of the two major rivalries focused on in the game--if he's taken out, this game is going to get delayed since it will need to be thoroughly reworked. I really hope he's in there; CM Punk has had a huge effect on current WWE programming.
